Chapter 100 – Until We Meet Again
Although Ling Mo had mentally prepared himself, he was still taken aback when he saw Lin Luanqiu’s door wide open.
She had left early in the morning, leaving behind a detailed map of the central area for Ling Mo, with a note at the end: “This is to thank you for bandaging my wounds. I hope we meet again! And… thank you!”
“Until we meet again…”
Ling Mo couldn’t help but recall the look Lin Luanqiu gave him yesterday. Why did it now seem to carry a hint of melancholy?
“Maybe I’m just overthinking it.”
Ling Mo quickly shook his head. The relationship between him and Lin Luanqiu was purely cooperative, and they had spent very little time together, barely getting to know each other.
If there was anything to say, it was that Lin Luanqiu probably valued his abilities and wanted to team up with him. However, Ling Mo was firm in his stance, and it was clear that they couldn’t continue to work together.
Ling Mo’s original plan was for Lin Luanqiu to stay here and recuperate. Given that she was a superhuman, she should be well aware of her recovery progress and wouldn’t risk her life lightly. Additionally, she was very familiar with the local environment, so she shouldn’t end up in a dire situation again.
Since Lin Luanqiu said “until we meet again,” perhaps they would indeed cross paths once more…
Ling Mo had no doubt about the authenticity of the map. Lin Luanqiu wasn’t the type to be ungrateful. The detailed nature of the map showed how much effort she had put into it.
After pushing aside these miscellaneous thoughts, Ling Mo focused on the map. According to the markings, although there were many zombies around, most were concentrated in specific areas, leaving plenty of open spaces in between.
This phenomenon was due to X City University’s efforts to create a pleasant campus environment by constructing an artificial river running through the entire campus, along with several small artificial lakes.
The complex environment had caused most of the zombies to cluster in more open areas, so the campus wasn’t completely overrun; there were still many paths available for survivors to navigate. Even in these zones, the risk was only relatively lower. It was impossible to avoid zombies entirely.
However, most zombies were likely trapped inside the buildings. Outside, there was at least a chance to escape, but entering these buildings was like stepping into a zombie nest, and only those with considerable skills would dare approach. Lin Luanqiu had annotated these buildings, roughly estimating the number of zombies inside. Though not perfectly accurate, these notes provided a valuable reference.
On the simple map Lin Luanqiu had given him, two locations were specially marked: the C3 Teaching Building and the A1 Teaching Building.
These two buildings were located at opposite ends of a road. Judging by their size, they were likely the most frequented places for classes, surrounded by artificial landscapes like flowerbeds and even a small creek. When the disaster struck, many people probably tried to escape, but most were likely trapped inside along with the zombies. The scenic design, while beautiful, had become deadly in such times. Though these were just analyses, they were very useful for Ling Mo.
However, instead of setting his sights on these distant targets, Ling Mo focused on a building closer to his current location.
“The Peace Theater?”
X City University was well-known for its musicals and plays. Occasionally, international troupes would perform there. If a performance was underway when the disaster hit, the number of zombies inside would be significant.
The word “Peace” now seemed bitterly ironic.
As Ling Mo studied the map closely, Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng had also woken up. They were still hoping Ling Mo would find zombie blood for them and had barely slept all night.
“Hey, how come…” He Pengpeng began to ask as he looked inside, but Tang Xiaoxue quickly covered his mouth.
“What are you doing? I just wanted to ask where that sick girl went!” He Pengpeng, annoyed, shook off Tang Xiaoxue’s hand and said.
Tang Xiaoxue finally relaxed, thinking to himself, “I thought you were going to ask if he had a good time last night…” After listening to Ling Mo for a few seconds the previous night, He Pengpeng had excitedly dragged him into a discussion that lasted a full hour, leaving a deep impression on Tang Xiaoxue.
“But that has nothing to do with us. Let’s get to the point.” Tang Xiaoxue thought it would be better if he asked the questions.
Yesterday, Ling Mo and Lin Luanqiu hadn’t avoided talking in front of them. Although he only caught snippets, Tang Xiaoxue roughly guessed that they weren’t really on the same side.
This made him reconsider his judgment about Ling Mo and his companions…
“DaLao, with your skills, can you safely take down a zombie?” He Pengpeng gave Tang Xiaoxue a glare, then excitedly asked Ling Mo.
Looking out the window, all they could see were zombies, which made their skin crawl. But Ling Mo seemed unfazed.
He instructed Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng to stay inside the building, then went out alone. Tang Xiaoxue had been quite nervous, worried that Ling Mo might never come back. But seeing Ye Lian and Xia Na stay behind reassured him.
However, could Ling Mo really kill a zombie on his own? It wasn’t just about fighting one; he could easily attract several or even a dozen zombies…
But seeing Ling Mo effortlessly leap into the garden, moving with ease and without any tension, Tang Xiaoxue’s anxiety began to ease.
Unexpectedly, as soon as Ling Mo appeared, a zombie wandering by the roadside noticed him and quickly moved toward him.
Both survivors felt their hearts tighten, though Tang Xiaoxue was panicked, while He Pengpeng was excited.
With Ling Mo’s skills, he should be able to easily dismantle that zombie…
However, something unexpected happened. As soon as the zombie started moving, Ling Mo immediately turned and ran back toward the school hospital, his speed even faster than when he had gone out.
The zombie, following closely behind, charged straight toward the school hospital.
“This is ridiculous!”
He Pengpeng was shocked and was about to step back when he suddenly remembered Xia Na was beside him.
“Move aside,” Xia Na said coldly.
Actually, she didn’t need to remind them. Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng had already moved to the side, while Ling Mo charged back into the school hospital.
As soon as the zombie appeared in the doorway, Xia Na, who had been waiting, swiftly decapitated it with a clean strike.
“This coordination… is perfect!” Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng were stunned. The most amazing part was that Ye Lian seemed to have anticipated this outcome. She shut the door just as the zombie stepped inside, preventing the fresh smell of blood from immediately attracting other zombies outside.
Looking at the headless corpse on the floor, Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng felt chills running down their spines. Ling Mo’s expression was extremely relaxed, clearly not because he had been overpowered by the zombie but because he had already planned the next step.
It seemed that getting close to a group of zombies and luring one out was as simple as chatting for Ling Mo and his team. They had done it so effortlessly, without any apparent preparation.
In fact, Ling Mo could have done even better. He could have controlled the zombie to commit suicide right in front of Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng. But knowing there was a superhuman nearby, it was wise to conserve his strength as much as possible.
“Alright, take your time smearing the blood,” Ling Mo said, snapping Tang Xiaoxue and He Pengpeng back to reality.
“DaLao, if I hadn’t hesitated to kill that female student, I would’ve wanted to join your team,” He Pengpeng said with a smile.
Tang Xiaoxue rolled his eyes at him, thinking that Ling Mo’s female companions were no pushovers. “You’re just a big guy who eats a lot. What use would you be?”
Ling Mo wasn’t interested in watching them smear zombie blood and wait for it to dry.
“Well… try to stay alive.”
In this catastrophe and in that superhuman’s grand plan, these two were just ordinary background characters.
The best encouragement Ling Mo could offer was this simple phrase.
He Pengpeng still had his usual cheeky grin, but Tang Xiaoxue’s eyes dimmed for a moment before he said, “You too.”
