Chapter 156 – Voyeurs Get Their Comeuppance
Ling Mo was giving Li Yalin a detailed lesson. “You see, this is the throat, here is the heart, and this is the kidney… In short, when you’re fighting, you need to avoid being attacked in these areas as much as possible. Otherwise, even if you don’t die, you’ll be seriously injured. Cuts to the limbs or some superficial wounds are not a big deal. With the self-healing ability of a zombie and my bandaging skills, you’ll be fine in no time.”
His aim was to educate Li Yalin on these matters. Even though advanced zombies could already recognize danger, know when to advance or retreat, and even ambush their opponents, they would go berserk and attack mindlessly without caring about their own vulnerabilities. This kind of strategy was effective against ordinary zombies or typical survivors, but what if the opponent was someone like Luo Heng who had a gun and excellent marksmanship?
Or what if they encountered a superhuman with extraordinary abilities? These were all scenarios that had to be considered. Ye Lian and Xia Na, having spent considerable time with Ling Mo, had learned a lot through osmosis. Combined with Ling Mo’s constant reminders, they rarely exhibited that characteristic reckless fighting style of zombies anymore.
Li Yalin, however, was different. Due to her strong resistance in the past, Ling Mo hadn’t had the chance to teach her these things until now.
Taking advantage of the mirror, he wanted her to understand her strengths and weaknesses.
“This is your abdomen, very soft and a big target. You need to be careful to protect it during fights. What? Do you have a question? Oh… are you referring to these two protruding, spherical objects? These are called breasts. What? You think breasts have no combat value? The larger the breasts, the stronger the combat power. Look, given your size, if I use a short pocket knife, it wouldn’t be able to penetrate the breast and reach the heart…”
As Ling Mo patiently explained, his pupils suddenly constricted. He swiftly pulled Li Yalin to the side, taking two quick steps to hide behind the column where the dressing mirror was hung.
His movements were quick. While hiding, he reached out and zipped up Li Yalin’s clothes.
From the corner of his eye, he noticed a shadow appearing at the doorway, indicating the presence of someone else.
If it weren’t for the mirror, Ling Mo would never have noticed the presence of this shadow. The figure stood pressed against the wall, blending in like a mannequin devoid of any presence.
But those eyes—filled with an intense, murderous aura—gave Ling Mo a chilling sense of danger. This feeling was familiar; ever since they set foot on the Jade Belt Bridge, Ling Mo had felt a vague sense of being watched. So, the one who had been stalking and spying on them this whole time must be the owner of those eyes.
“Is it a survivor or a zombie?”
The thought flashed through Ling Mo’s mind as he released Li Yalin and slowly drew his short knife.
To prevent any accidents involving Ye Lian and Xia Na, he immediately sent them a danger signal through a psychic command.
Ling Mo’s heart was filled with an inexplicable dread as he watched the shadow. One of his zombie puppets was standing outside the door, while another was among a group of zombies searching for a mutation zombie. Neither had detected this figure.
The level of stealth this person possessed was astounding. Ling Mo had never encountered anyone who could blend in so seamlessly.
This was practically a God-level stealth technique!
Could the strange occurrences in the area be due not to a large number of survivors, but rather to this unknown entity—whether human or zombie?
In the span of a second, numerous speculations flashed through Ling Mo’s mind. However, his eyes remained fixed on the corner of the mirror, and he began to move his feet slowly.
Even Li Yalin hadn’t sensed the presence of the shadow, but upon receiving Ling Mo’s psychic command, she tightened her body and refrained from making any sudden movements.
Just as Ling Mo was slowly retreating, his heel accidentally knocked over a stainless steel clothing rack that had fallen to the ground.
“Clang!”
Although it was a minor noise, in the deathly silence of the clothing store, it sounded magnified a thousand times over.
“Crap!”
In such an eerie atmosphere, making a sound was akin to completely exposing their location to the opponent. Whether this figure was human or zombie, if they had any ill intentions toward Ling Mo and his group, they would likely launch an attack at this moment.
Sure enough, just as the noise echoed through the store, the shadowy figure darted out from its hiding spot.
But at that very instant, a zombie, incredibly fast, leaped in from outside, attacking the figure from the side.
This was Ling Mo’s quick thinking. Since their cover was already blown, he decided to use himself as bait, allowing the zombie puppet outside to launch a surprise attack.
However, while the idea was sound and the reaction swift, the outcome was far from ideal.
The figure’s reflexes were even faster! It was evident that this person’s nervous and physical responses were nearly synchronized. As soon as the zombie launched its sneak attack, the figure’s body had already taken corresponding action.
And this response wasn’t something an average person would instinctively do when faced with an ambush.
As the zombie lunged, the figure twisted around and delivered a clean, forceful roundhouse kick.
“Thud!”
The kick was amazingly strong!
The zombie puppet was instantly sent flying, crashing heavily into a glass window. A loud crash ensued, and glass shards scattered everywhere. The noise immediately drew the attention of the hundred or so zombies in the square.
Ling Mo swiftly controlled another zombie puppet to emit a low growl and lead the charge toward the commotion. Seizing the opportunity, he grabbed Li Yalin and fled toward the back of the clothing store.
Ye Lian and Xia Na also emerged from a changing room, but their appearance nearly made Ling Mo spit out blood in shock.
“Just three days unsupervised, and you start causing trouble. How dare you dress like that… I’ll deal with you later!”
With an unidentified, eerie figure and over a hundred zombies, there was no way Ling Mo would corner himself in the clothing store.
He controlled the zombie puppets to lure the zombies and delay the mysterious figure. It was a risky move.
Dashing out the back door of the store and slamming it shut, Ling Mo glimpsed through his zombie puppet’s vision the partial side profile of the figure.
The reason he only caught half a glimpse was because, as he controlled the zombie puppet to leap at the shadowy figure, the figure just casually ducked, then shot up with a knee strike that shattered the puppet’s jawbone. The puppet’s face deformed instantly, effectively killing it. Before Ling Mo could sever the psychic link, a sharp pain suddenly pierced his mind.
“Damn it!”
But even in that brief moment, Ling Mo managed to get a vague look at the figure.
A zombie… but unlike any he’s ever seen before. This one had blood-red pupils, but the whites of its eyes were like white jade.
It looked as if it was wearing blood-red contact lenses, but in an apocalypse, who would go through the hassle to find and wear colored lenses? Plus, the vivid red color was eerily striking.
The zombie had short black hair falling loosely around its head and appeared to have a fairly handsome, yet somewhat juvenile face.
However, the bloodthirsty and indifferent look in its eyes was more terrifying than any zombie Ling Mo had ever encountered.
The most crucial thing was that this was a very clean zombie… extremely powerful, with unusual eyes, and it knew how to keep itself clean. There was no doubt this was a higher-level zombie than the advanced ones he had seen before!
Moreover, before the zombie puppets attacked, Ling Mo had vaguely sensed that both puppets had a deep fear and a sense of submission towards this zombie. They even showed signs of resistance to Ling Mo’s control, but his psychic power was too strong, so they ended up as cannon fodder.
Simply put, the instinctual behavior was like an ordinary wolf encountering a wolf king.
If this zombie wished, with its unique abilities, it could easily form a zombie battalion. The number of zombies in this battalion would likely depend on its strength.
Leader-level zombie! Ling Mo immediately categorized it in his mind.
Ling Mo felt utterly exasperated. Why, at this time and place, did they have to encounter an even stronger zombie?
Before, Ling Mo had mentally prepared himself countless times, even hoping to encounter a zombie more advanced than a Senior Zombie. But he never expected that this teenage zombie would be hiding in the corner, peeping while he almost undressed Li Yalin!
Voyeur never end well! Ling Mo cursed inwardly as he quickly led the three female zombies away.
The area was too narrow, and with over a hundred zombies around, it was not a suitable place for a fight.
Judging by the ease and nonchalance with which the Leader-Level Zombie killed the zombie puppet, its combat prowess was off the charts. Plus, the other zombies wouldn’t attack it…staying here was too dangerous for Ling Mo!
Sure enough, as Ling Mo and his group ran down a small path behind the house and into a nearby garden, they heard the door being kicked open with a loud bang.
Standing at the doorway was the Leader-Level Zombie. It looked no older than seventeen or eighteen, with a faint baby face. Its hair just reached its shoulders, and it wore a bloodstained sports uniform.
However, its face and hair were very clean, especially its hands.
Those long, pale fingers seemed untouched by blood, but the slightly inward-curved nails gave away the fact that these hands were far from harmless.
Despite looking like a teenager, the Leader-Level Zombie had an intimidating gaze.
It glanced briefly in the direction of the small garden, then followed swiftly with incredibly light steps.
As it ran, its footfalls were almost silent. When it leapt over shrubs and flowerbeds, it did so without making contact.
If the obstacle ahead was too large, it would extend its hand, lightly push off at just the right moment, and vault over with ease.
Such agile movements, more nimble than a monkey’s!
However, in terms of pure speed, it didn’t seem to have a significant advantage…
