Chapter 480 – The Enemy is Too Ferocious
A few minutes ago, on a street a kilometer away from the helicopter explosion site—
“Boom!”
A sudden muffled sound startled Li Hao and his two companions, who were searching inside a building.
By the time they ran out, thick black smoke was already rising from the direction of the explosion.
“What’s going on?” Li Hao immediately frowned. “Right, I just heard a helicopter…”
He looked up at the sky, but apart from the blinding sunlight, he saw nothing.
There wasn’t even a bird in sight, let alone a helicopter.
A very bad premonition suddenly surged in his heart, and Li Hao’s face turned extremely grim. “Quick! The helicopter might be in trouble!”
He drew his gun and rushed toward the rising black smoke. The Gray-clad Man and the Raincoat Man closely followed behind.
“They said the helicopter was in trouble… but they’ve always maintained a safe altitude.”
The Gray-clad Man said as he ran, turning to look at the Raincoat Man beside him.
The Raincoat Man glanced at him, then moved his lips: “…”
“…Forget I said anything.” The Gray-clad Man shivered.
The Gray-clad Man was still quite apprehensive about his teammate, who wore a long raincoat day and night and looked like a creepy serial killer from every angle.
Li Hao heard the Gray-clad Man’s words and said without turning his head, “Indeed, but Ling Mo hadn’t shown up earlier, and now there’s such a big commotion, and the helicopter is missing at this moment… I don’t think it’s a coincidence.”
“If the helicopter maintained its altitude… and it was really Ling Mo who shot it down…”
The Gray-clad Man didn’t finish his sentence, but the shock in his eyes expressed his meaning clearly.
“If that’s the case, then this enemy might be much more troublesome than we imagined! And who knows… if they’re still alive…”
Li Hao said grimly.
For the past two days, the helicopter had been circling overhead but had found nothing.
And although he had been tracking the mental energy fluctuations left by Ling Mo, there had been no results.
Despite the familiar mental energy fluctuations being everywhere, and several times making Li Hao feel like he was about to catch Ling Mo, he still ended up empty-handed.
“So we’ve been played… Instead of targeting the Ground Squad, he went for the Aerial Squad first… Were those mental energy fluctuations left on purpose to distract us?”
As he ran, Li Hao closed his eyes.
In his probe, a cluster of tiny light particles slowly appeared in the pitch-black darkness before him.
These tiny particles were the remnants left after psychic fluctuations. As long as Ling Mo had used his psychic power, he would leave these residues at the location.
Over time, these particles would gradually merge with other energies and become indistinguishable, but until then, they could remain for a considerable amount of time.
Li Hao’s superpower not only allowed him to capture these traces but also to determine if they were left by the same person.
Even though they were all psychic powers, the fluctuations left by different people were distinct.
If Li Hao were stronger, he could even capture the traces left by ordinary people when their emotions fluctuated intensely.
Once he had someone in his sights, as long as the target didn’t die, he would eventually find them.
Initially, Li Hao thought his tracking methods were secretive enough that Ling Mo wouldn’t anticipate them and thus wouldn’t have any countermeasures. But now it seemed those psychic fluctuations were deliberately left to toy with them.
“How… How did he know?”
Li Hao was baffled…
If Ling Mo knew what Li Hao was thinking at that moment, he would definitely laugh his head off…
Of course, he didn’t know what Li Hao’s superpower was specifically, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t think of a way to counter it.
Having Xiao Bai rub against something vigorously every now and then, or even urinate here and there, wasn’t difficult…
As for those mental energy fluctuations… as long as the psychic link between him and Xiao Bai was maintained, some traces would definitely be left behind.
So Ling Mo’s strategy was simple: “Let Xiao Bai run ahead and lead these guys on a wild goose chase. If it doesn’t work, then think of something else.”
Unexpectedly, it worked just right…
“To think he played us like fools. We thought we had him under control, but instead, he’s been toying with us all along…”
Li Hao gritted his teeth in frustration. As he ran, he reached for his walkie-talkie at his waist, but there was nothing but static on the other end.
“What’s… going on!”
Anxious, Li Hao quickened his pace and dashed into an alley, suddenly coming to a halt.
At the other end of the alley, a figure was leaning against the wall, stumbling forward.
“Who’s there!” Li Hao immediately raised his gun, shouting sternly.
“It’s… it’s… me…”
The figure stopped and answered in a broken voice.
Backlit and in the dimly lit alley, the person’s features were hard to make out. However, from Li Hao’s perspective, he could see one of the person’s arms hanging limply at their side, blood dripping from their hand to the ground.
When the figure lifted their head, the familiar shape of a duckbill cap made Li Hao freeze for a moment:
“Old Tang! Is that you?”
The figure propped against the wall, answered with difficulty, “It’s me, I’m Old Tang…”
“Thank goodness!”
Li Hao showed a hint of relief and quickly ran up to the duckbill cap.
But as Li Hao grasped the cap’s shoulder and looked closely at his condition, he was once again stunned: “Your… your face…”
The duckbill cap slowly lifted his brim, squinting and slurring his words: “…The enemy is too ferocious.”
“This is beyond just ferocious…”
Although it was barely recognizable that this was indeed Old Tang, his appearance was just too…
Not only were his eyes swollen to mere slits, exuding only confusion, but his face also showed no other expressions…
How could he see with his face so swollen!
And that crooked mouth… it explained why his voice sounded so strange.
The Gray-clad Man and the Raincoat Man also ran over. Seeing Old Tang’s condition, they fell silent immediately.
“Bang!”
Li Hao suddenly clenched his fist and slammed it into the wall beside him. “This is outrageous! Don’t worry, I’ll make him pay a hundredfold for this!”
“Can you hold on? Tell us what happened first.”
As he spoke, Li Hao signaled to the Gray-clad Man, who immediately put down his bag and took out medical supplies to bandage the duckbill cap’s injured wrist.
The duckbill cap slid down to sit against the wall and, with a muffled voice, began to recount the events with great difficulty.
By the time he finished, Li Hao’s brow was deeply furrowed. “You mean to say, he deliberately spared you to send us a message?”
“Yeah… he said, seeing me in this state would be a huge humiliation for you all.”
The duckbill cap seemed to try to convey a sense of indignation, but with his swollen face, no expression was discernible…
“Hmph, how utterly arrogant.”
Li Hao clenched his fist again, then suddenly showed a hint of doubt and said, “No… he didn’t intentionally spare you.”
Li Hao stood up abruptly and gripped his gun tightly. “The helicopter crash was already a massive disgrace. Why leave you alive?”
“This…” The duckbill cap tried hard to open his eyes wider.
“Based on what you just described… he’s clearly low on psychic power! Commanding so many zombies must have been a significant strain for him. Then he fought a battle, which further drained him…”
Li Hao quickly deduced the real reason. Although the duckbill cap’s account wasn’t very detailed, as a fellow superhuman with mental abilities, Li Hao could catch those nuances.
“Is… is that so? Then I… I shouldn’t have…”
The duckbill cap regretfully pounded his fist, causing fresh blood to seep through the newly bandaged wound.
“Alright, it’s not your fault. He put on a convincing act… But now, it’s the perfect time for us to track him down and catch them all in one go!”
