Chapter 675 – I Have Professional Armor
Amidst the countless sparks, a small amount of blood was mixed in.
However, the Bird Zombie’s pair of thin wings served as specialized armor at this moment.
It lifted its arm, covering its entire upper body and head.
Ling Mo’s materialized attacks suddenly became ineffective, each strike seemed to hit a steel plate, not only yielding little effect but also making his head spin with each impact.
“Cackle, cackle, cackle!”
The Bird Zombie maintained a head-protecting posture, producing a string of mocking, eerie laughter.
Watching this human scramble up and down brought obvious delight to the Bird Zombie.
Its attitude was more playful rather than hurried for a meal.
However, Ling Mo did not appreciate being toyed with like a Rat.
No sooner had it felt triumphant for a couple of seconds, when the Bird Zombie’s piercing laughter abruptly ceased, replaced by a scream: “Ah!”
Simultaneously, its body convulsed, and its two arms hung limply.
Almost immediately after its face was exposed, an explosion of flames burst right onto it.
It was as if someone had thrown a firework about to explode directly into its face.
“Being mocked by a Birdman, who can tolerate that?”
Ling Mo’s face turned pale, and he let out a cold snort.
Materialized tentacles couldn’t break through that membrane, but intangible mental energy could.
The Bird Zombie’s psychic light cluster was hard to penetrate, but as long as one seized a flaw, it wasn’t an impenetrable fortress.
For instance, earlier, Ling Mo keenly captured the moment the Bird Zombie’s attention lapsed, decisively transforming his already materialized tentacles back into pure mental energy.
When a massive psychic shock caused the Bird Zombie’s behavior to go awry, the pre-prepared wave of materialized tentacles struck hard.
After two consecutive, smoothly connected assaults, the Bird Zombie’s head spun, and its face burned.
It retracted swiftly, retreating about ten meters, and touched its face with its hand.
Seeing the blood on its palm and feeling the searing pain radiating from its face, the Bird Zombie’s expression transformed fiercely.
It immediately lifted its head, glaring with bulging eyes, and its mouth widened, revealing eerily white teeth.
“Ahhh!”
When the Bird Zombie let out its cry, Ling Mo’s attention involuntarily drifted towards its throat.
Watching the constantly quivering tongue, Ling Mo had the eerie feeling that the sound was emerging from deep within that dark abyss of a throat…
Just the sound alone made Ling Mo’s scalp tingle with unease.
And similar to the Screamer, this sound also seemed to have an effect.
After hearing it a couple of times, Ling Mo felt his legs growing weak.
He tried to move his feet but was horrified to find he could hardly move at all…
“This is bad. Although my willpower can resist, my body is out of control…”
This was even considering his rather good physical condition. For an average person, they might have already collapsed.
“My face!”
The Bird Zombie’s fingernails dug into its own hand, scratching down its cheek with a harsh, grating sound.
“With a face like sandpaper, I didn’t expect you to care so much,” Ling Mo said naturally, his body still stiff, while his peripheral vision darted to his feet.
It’s hard to explain, but it seems to be some kind of emergency mechanism that the body naturally initiates when it senses an extreme threat, causing the body to react autonomously to protect itself.
For example, an electrical shutdown—passing out, or entering sleep mode—a blank mind.
But a full-body weakness like this, Ling Mo had never heard of before…
This wasn’t protection; it was a disaster!
“Could it be that if the sound exceeds the human body’s tolerance, it causes blood vessels to burst and results in death by explosion?”
Ling Mo speculated wildly as he glanced backward.
In that short span of a few seconds, Xiao Bai’s large figure had completely disappeared.
A slight sensing revealed that they had already charged into Central Avenue.
In such a place filled with intersections and Zombies everywhere, escaping wouldn’t be too difficult for them given their abilities.
Ye Lian was discovered, evidently because her aura was completely exposed during her breakthrough.
If she deliberately concealed her presence, the chances of discovery would be much lower.
However, if the distance between them wasn’t large enough, things would be different.
“How much longer can I hold on?”
Sweat began to bead on Ling Mo’s palms again. He wasn’t at his limit yet, but he was getting close.
Especially with his body in less than ideal condition, it was hard to say how much longer he could last.
The Bird Zombie had initially come for a meal, although the peculiar nature of its “food” had piqued its curiosity, it was now completely overridden by rage.
“Human! You hurt my face!” the Bird Zombie screamed in fury.
Its skeletal fingers scraped over its taxidermy-like face, paired with its twisted expression, making for an utterly horrifying sight.
“I’m upholding justice!”
Ling Mo responded righteously.
If he needed to buy time, he might as well draw its attention entirely to himself!
Ling Mo’s fingers pressed against his temple, his eyes occasionally glancing over his body: “Come on, give me some response! Don’t go on strike at a time like this!”
Whether this psychological hint and self-encouragement would work, Ling Mo wasn’t sure.
But it was better than nothing!
In the worst-case scenario… Ling Mo glanced down at his own legs, feeling a sudden sense of determination.
The Bird Zombie’s face was smeared with blood, and its anger was being fueled more by Ling Mo’s provocations.
“Justice? Does my face look deformed?”
The Bird Zombie surprisingly remembered these words and used them rather naturally.
“Yes.” Ling Mo nodded.
“From where does it look deformed?” the Bird Zombie snarled, baring its teeth as it asked.
As it questioned, its fingers continued their relentless scratching of its skin.
Its claws, if used on others, would leave them faceless with just a single swipe.
It was only its own skin that could withstand the torment of its sharp claws.
The sound of the harsh “click-click” reverberated in Ling Mo’s ears, leaving him momentarily speechless.
A Birdman looking like a dried corpse, its face covered in blood while incessantly scratching that layer of dried skin…
It would be more accurate to ask what part of it wasn’t deformed!
The Bird Zombie had entirely lost its patience. It suddenly let out an “Ah!” and charged forward.
With its speed, Ling Mo had barely blinked before seeing a Dark Shadow quickly enlarge right before him.
“Whoosh!”
A gust of wind rushed past his face; from the sound of it, if Ling Mo got hit, he’d probably end up decapitated on the spot.
Ling Mo instantly felt a cold surge erupt from within him, and his heart skipped a beat.
His legs still wouldn’t move!
As the Dark Shadow reached him, Ling Mo tilted his head to the side and leaped backward with incredible speed.
His toes were still touching the ground, but he managed to create a significant distance in the blink of an eye.
Before he even landed, he abruptly jumped up onto a shop sign to his side. With a brief pause, he then leaped down and disappeared around the corner.
The Bird Zombie’s attack hit nothing but air, and in the span of a second, Ling Mo had vanished from sight, leaving the Bird Zombie wide-eyed and bewildered.
However, curiosity didn’t slow the Bird Zombie down this time; it continued its relentless pursuit.
As Ling Mo used his psychic tentacles to propel himself, he glanced back over his shoulder, frowning.
The Dark Shadow was intermittently visible behind him, and it seemed to be getting closer.
“Persistent, aren’t we…”
Ling Mo quickly calculated his current energy consumption and the amount of mental energy he could safely use.
The result was troubling. If he maintained this speed, he could only last another ten minutes.
It wouldn’t be so problematic if he just had to keep running, but he also needed to consider the distance between himself and Ye Lian and the others.
That made it significantly harder to shake off the Bird Zombie.
“Human, running is futile! Hahaha…”
The Bird Zombie began its piercing laugh again. The wounds on its feet and face had already clotted.
Stimulated by the blood, its tone sounded crazed and excited.
“And if I don’t run, I just wait to die?”
Ling Mo retorted, his focus unwavering.
Using his tentacles to latch onto street lamps or utility poles to swing himself forward was easier said than done.
Catching the next target accurately at high speed and reacting the moment he spotted it wasn’t exactly simple.
One moment of distraction, and it would be a disaster…
