Chapter 25 – Breakout
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
After giving Sun Ruixing a brief reply, Li Quan'an continued with what he was doing. Wen Yu only gave Sun Ruixing a quick once-over and said nothing else.
Sun Ruixing's intentions were nothing more than wanting to protect these Ordinary People. Whether to do such a thing was entirely a matter of one's own willingness; there was no need for others to criticize.
Naturally, Li Quan'an had no reason to refuse.
Five minutes passed in the blink of an eye. Once everything had been arranged, Li Quan'an strode up to Wen Yu.
"Let's begin."
Wen Yu glanced at the team standing ready, then at Li Quan'an's resolute expression, and gave a heavy nod.
Picking up the Steel Blade, Wen Yu stood at the very front of the entire team. At his side was his Soul Pet-One-Eye. Behind him was a long line of Vehicles. Further back was Sun Ruixing with more than a hundred Ordinary People who had not Changed Class. At the very rear were Li Quan'an and his men, as well as their relatives.
The layers were clearly defined.
"Move out!"
Under the booming voice of a Level 2 Class Holder, the whole team heard Wen Yu clearly.
Engines started, and the team began to roll forward slowly.
As Wen Yu started walking, then sped up more and more, the team continued to accelerate as well. Before long, they had reached the blockade line of the Mutated Vine.
Wen Yu looked back at the crowd behind him. This time, he didn't say anything more. He simply had One-Eye charge forward. Wen Yu immediately entered Combat State and followed close behind.
"Move, hurry up! Stay close to Brother Wen Yu-move!"
Li Quan'an roared loudly from the rear.
Along with Li Quan'an's hoarse bellow, One-Eye planted a paw onto the Mutant Plant blockade line.
There was no movement at all.
Whether in the farmland, on the mountainside beside them, or even underground, there wasn't the slightest sound.
Wen Yu's heart tightened at once.
These Mutated Vine had already developed rudimentary intelligence, and they intended to wipe out every last Survivor in one net.
But for Wen Yu, this was absolutely the best news he could have hoped for.
It meant Wen Yu would be able to pass safely for several hundred meters, greatly easing the pressure.
"Everyone behind, pick up the pace!"
Wen Yu bellowed. One-Eye immediately sped up. The team behind followed step for step; the Ordinary People were supported by the Class Holder behind them, and the Vehicles pushed their speed to the maximum.
When Li Quan'an at the very back stepped onto the Mutant Plant blockade line, there was still no sound at all-like the calm before a storm.
"Something's not right…"
The atmosphere around them made Wen Yu's heart pound.
One-Eye seemed to sense the danger and directly burst into its top speed.
Rumble, rumble.
A faint, muffled sound began to rise from the mountainside beside them, growing louder and louder.
When it reached its peak, the mountainside abruptly exploded.
Countless Vines erupted from within the mountain like a waterfall, mixed with large amounts of broken rock, and lunged straight at the Survivor team.
"Ah!"
"Help!"
"Wang-Ge, save me-I'm tangled up!"
Piercing screams mingled with the sound of falling stones, along with the sound of Vines twisting human bodies apart, echoing throughout the entire narrow road.
Wen Yu didn't spare a thought for what was happening behind him. The Steel Blade in his hand chopped down, shattering the Vines that came at him, while One-Eye cleared the way up front, charging forward in great strides.
One man and one beast, with unstoppable momentum, charged straight through the defensive line of this wave of Mutated Vines.
As for the people behind him, Wen Yu didn't even think about caring.
In fact, when discussing the plan with Li Quan'an, there was one sentence Wen Yu didn't tell him.
You, in my eyes, are nothing more than Cannon Fodder.
…
Up ahead was not a clear, open path.
Those Vines just now had merely been the prelude.
As Wen Yu sprinted through this stretch along the mountainside, the ground ahead leveled out-but everywhere, the ground was covered in Vines baring their fangs and claws.
One-Eye didn't hesitate at all. As it ran, its right paw swung out, ripping apart the Vines ahead, then ignoring everything else and lowering its head as it charged forward.
Countless Vines coiled around One-Eye's body and were hacked to pieces by Wen Yu behind it. But there were simply too many; the speed of the man and the beast inevitably dropped, and then even more Vines caught up and wrapped around them.
It was a vicious cycle.
Wen Yu watched as One-Eye was already wrapped up like a huge zongzi, and his own legs were tightly bound by Vines as well. He immediately canceled his Combat State, recalled One-Eye into the Second Soul Realm, and then released One-Eye again at once.
This was Wen Yu's best way of dealing with these Vines.
With One-Eye able to freely enter and exit the Soul Realm, these Mutated Vines simply couldn't trap it.
The moment One-Eye emerged from the Soul Realm, it immediately launched an attack on the Vines on Wen Yu.
Its sharp claws tore through the Vines on Wen Yu. Once Wen Yu regained his mobility, he broke into a run toward the outside.
Although he'd just been entangled by Mutated Vines, their killing power was really not worth mentioning. Aside from a few extra scratches on his face, he had no injuries at all.
Mutated Vines couldn't break through an E-Rank Protective Suit.
One-Eye took long strides and surged past Wen Yu. Without entering Combat State, Wen Yu couldn't match One-Eye in speed.
And so the scene fell into an awkward loop.
One-Eye paid no attention to how many Vines were on its body. It simply charged forward with all its strength, while occasionally clearing away the Mutated Vines along the way.
Wen Yu stayed close behind One-Eye's rear, enjoying the passage One-Eye carved out, while using the Steel Blade in his hand to knock away the Vines on himself.
When One-Eye could no longer move, Wen Yu immediately recalled it into the Soul Realm and released it once more. At that time, One-Eye would first deal with the Vines on Wen Yu, then repeat the process above.
Vines came at them from all directions, making Wen Yu feel as if he were facing countless enemies-impossible to kill them all, impossible to cut them all down.
Just as Wen Yu felt his arms starting to ache, the situation finally changed.
The Vines around them grew fewer and fewer, until they vanished completely.
Wen Yu let out a heavy breath. This stretch of road had to have been at least several kilometers.
Don't let the process fool you into thinking it was uneventful-its physical toll was anything but light. Being attacked from all directions every moment put tremendous pressure on Wen Yu.
Thankfully, the Class Holders from Hualin Town behind them had shouldered most of the Vines; otherwise, he and One-Eye probably wouldn't have had the stamina to charge their way out.
Taking out a Primary Healing Potion, Wen Yu drank it straight down, and the few wounds on his face from being scraped by Vines slowly healed.
The effect of a Primary Healing Potion wasn't all that significant for Wen Yu anymore.
"I wonder how Li Quan'an and the others are doing?"
