Chapter 150 – The Meaning of Existence!
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
After the Ruler finished speaking, his voice gradually faded away.
He hadn't truly left, of course. Likely, the Ruler was hiding somewhere outside the Barrier, silently watching the struggles of his venomous insects or the shifts in their mentalities!
Perhaps he was swirling a glass of red wine, perhaps he was surrounded by beauties from various races, perhaps a faint smile played across his lips, perhaps…
But there was one thing that was impossible: mercy.
He would not let them go-not these lowly ants, not these Earth Creatures who had been comrades just moments ago, not these humans and Mutant Beasts being toyed with, and certainly not the cruel designs in his own heart!
"What do we do?"
Sun Ruixing, standing beside Wen Yu, spoke in a low voice.
Wen Yu's lips trembled, but for a long time, he couldn't find the words.
What should they do? What could they do? What should they do? What else could they do?
"I won't attack you. Right… I won't attack you."
As if talking to himself, Sun Ruixing slowly turned around and walked toward the edge of the Barrier.
It was an escape, but it was the only escape possible.
Wen Yu looked up, watching Sun Ruixing's slightly hunched figure grow more distant. The anger and despair in his eyes intensified.
Laying a hand on Sun Ruixing was something Wen Yu desperately wanted to avoid.
Wen Yu wasn't a saint, but he certainly wasn't an irredeemable villain. Sun Ruixing had been kind to him; he had shown him loyalty. Wen Yu understood this, and he knew it well.
However!!!
"I want to live. I want to! Live!"
The sole wish he had held since his Rebirth into the Apocalypse felt so pale in the face of reality.
Morality, gratitude, and life itself.
This was a trial from the Ruler-or rather, a mockery. It was the most difficult choice of all.
…
The silent battlefield grew increasingly oppressive.
Eventually, even the sound of heavy breathing became barely audible.
To kill or be killed-sometimes, the choice was actually quite simple.
When a Class Holder raised his blade and hacked down a Mutant Beast beside him, the situation slid inevitably into the abyss.
Chaos first erupted on the outer edges of the battlefield.
Most of those present in that area were weaker Class Holders or Mutant Beasts.
They were also the first to buckle under the terrifying pressure.
Some Mutant Beasts began frantically tearing at the corpses on the ground-whether they belonged to the Human Race, other Mutant Beasts, or the Demon Race.
Some Class Holders rushed toward the Exchange Pillar.
They did so to increase their strength, all for the sake of being the one who survived until the end.
Wen Yu watched the surrounding creatures descend into madness. After a long silence, he gave a bitter smile.
Greed's Touch extended from his hand. At the same time, he summoned One-Eye back from wherever he had been. His gaze toward these maddened creatures grew colder and colder.
When slaughter became inevitable, all Wen Yu could do was kill. There was only slaughter.
Greed's Touch lashed out, striking a nearby Level 3 black bear. Immense power tore open the bear's belly, causing its internal organs to spill out. Then, Wen Yu thrust Greed's Touch directly into the bear's skull.
This Level 3 black bear had just killed a Level 3 Demonic Creature and was heavily injured. Under Wen Yu's sudden assault, it had no power to fight back.
The bear's roar was cut short in its throat. In its dulling eyes, there remained traces of doubt, disbelief, despair, and countless other emotions.
There were so many emotions that Wen Yu couldn't bear to look at it a second time.
Comrades just moments ago, and now… enemies.
…
"What… are you… doing?"
Just as Wen Yu killed the black bear, Little Dragon reacted immediately from a short distance away, roaring at Wen Yu!
The roar was so loud it made Wen Yu's ears ring, and it momentarily stunned the chaotic Class Holders and Mutant Beasts nearby.
Wen Yu calmly withdrew Greed's Touch from the black bear's skull, looking intently into Little Dragon's slightly dazed eyes.
"I am fighting! I am killing! I am struggling to survive! What do you think I'm doing?"
"I am trying my hardest, using every ounce of my strength just to keep my life!"
Wen Yu's voice trembled without him even realizing it.
He closed his eyes briefly, but the image of the black bear's final gaze kept replaying in his mind.
It had been intelligent-highly so.
That look in its eyes… it seemed to say: Weren't you the one who found us? Weren't you the one who led us to defeat the Demonic Creatures? Weren't we just fighting side by side?
Wen Yu understood, and that only made the torment worse.
"But… it… was a friend!"
Little Dragon's voice interrupted Wen Yu's thoughts.
"Yes, it was a friend."
"Killing… friends… is wrong."
"I know that too. But right now, out of every living thing you can see, only one can survive!"
Silence. Oppression.
The Ruler's method of communication was direct mental transmission. Therefore, even with Little Dragon's limited comprehension, it could clearly understand the meaning behind the Ruler's words.
But…
Little Dragon slowly lowered its body to the ground.
At the same time, a wave of mental fluctuations pulsed into Wen Yu's mind.
"Grandpa Tree… said…"
"The strong… are born… to protect… the weak!"
"I grew up… inside Grandpa Tree's… belly. I always… absorbed… Grandpa Tree's… power!"
"But… I understand… that was not… Grandpa Tree's own… power!"
"That was… the power… of this land!"
"I… originate from… this land. I… am… the King… of this earth! I… was born… to protect!"
"They… are all… children… of this land. They… are all… my family!"
"The meaning… of my existence… is not… slaughter… but protection!"
"To raise a hand… against them… I cannot do it!"
The look in Little Dragon's eyes slowly changed.
It shifted from the initial anger and confusion to a profound, unwavering resolve.
Then, Little Dragon slowly closed its eyes.
"They will kill you. Both the humans and the Mutant Creatures,"
Wen Yu spoke in a voice so low only the two of them could hear.
The massive dragon head nodded slightly twice, telling Wen Yu that it understood this reality.
"There is nothing wrong with fighting to stay alive."
Little Dragon slowly swayed its head.
"You don't understand. There will always be… things… more important… than living!"
Wen Yu sighed and nodded. He was about to say something else when he was interrupted by a sharp, shrill shout.
"Stop killing each other! That man and that dragon are the strongest! If we don't kill the two of them, none of us have a way out!"
Hearing this voice, Wen Yu finally looked around.
Without him noticing, the surrounding area had been crowded with Class Holders and a few Mutant Creatures.
It was impossible to tell where the voice had come from, but one only had to look at the bloodshot eyes of the surrounding beings to know the truth.
Almost every creature present agreed with that sentiment.
In a situation where only one could survive, uniting the weak to eliminate the strong was a highly effective tactic.
In the beginning, the weak killing each other was merely an instinctive drive to eliminate competitors. However, once the majority of humans grasped the situation, the strong would inevitably face a siege from the masses.
The actions of the humans would also guide the behavior of the Mutant Beasts. Having undergone mutation, these animals possessed enough intelligence to understand the humans' intent.
Standing at the very center of the encirclement, Wen Yu watched as the murderous intent around them grew more explosive. He turned his head to look at Little Dragon, who remained motionless on the ground with its eyes closed. After a long silence, he whispered, "Since you've made your decision… then, good luck."
