Chapter 36 – Investigating the Hospital Alone
After fleeing for her life and hiding a body all in the same day, Jiang Yushi was utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally, by the time they returned to the city that afternoon.
“I’ll go home tonight and talk to my parents. I’ll tell them I want to move into the laboratory. They’ll agree,” Jiang Yushi said. Though she looked easygoing, she was actually very much her own person. Since she had managed to convince her father to set up this laboratory in the first place, she could naturally make this happen too.
Su Lifeng nodded. He had not intended to make Jiang Yushi move in tonight anyway. But after thinking for a moment, he suddenly suggested, “How about this? I’ll have Xiaomei stay at your place with you for now. That way, when you move tomorrow, you’ll have someone to look out for you too. I doubt your parents would object to you bringing a close friend home, right?”
Jiang Yushi froze for a split second, then felt an inexplicable flicker of happiness. “Sure.” Though she knew nothing had happened between Su Lifeng and Cheng Xiaomei, the thought of the two of them living under the same roof…
“What am I thinking? Tomorrow, won’t I be living with him too? Hm? Put that way, doesn’t that mean the three of us will be living together? If… if anyone found out about that…” As her thoughts suddenly spiraled out of control, Jiang Yushi’s cheeks actually turned faintly red.
Su Lifeng gave her a puzzled look, then seemed to understand. He turned to Cheng Xiaomei and said quietly, “Jiang Yushi probably doesn’t have many friends. Try to get along with her.” She came from a wealthy family and was beautiful besides, yet who would have thought she had troubles like this too? It was just bringing a “best friend” home to hang out, and she was already this happy…
Unfortunately, although he had lowered his voice, the two girls were right next to him. How could they not hear? Jiang Yushi was instantly both angry and amused. Who didn’t have friends? Su Lifeng, you’re completely judging others by yourself!
Cheng Xiaomei, however, shifted her lips with some difficulty, as if she wanted to say something. Su Lifeng knew what she was worried about. He patted her on the shoulder and said, “I have something to do tonight. I won’t feel at ease leaving you alone at home. Stay with Yushi. Her house should be relatively safe. If anything happens, call me.”
For the time being, Su Lifeng had not seen any disaster premonitions involving Cheng Xiaomei. That meant she should be safe, at least in the short term, and the place she went should also be safe. Of course, it was not a hundred percent certain, but this was already the best arrangement Su Lifeng could make.
From the moment Su Lifeng had walked out of the laboratory, Cheng Xiaomei had felt that something about him seemed different. Perhaps this was a kind of Mutant intuition. Now, hearing Su Lifeng say this, Cheng Xiaomei was still deeply worried, but she obediently nodded in agreement. Only after agreeing did she realize, almost belatedly, what it was: confidence. What Su Lifeng had gained was a sense of confidence.
“I need to check things out before it gets dark, so you two should head back first. But don’t drive yourselves. Call your family’s bodyguards over first. If possible, find me an unregistered car to use. That should be pretty easy for your bodyguards to handle,” Su Lifeng said. Not using resources when they were available would be a waste, and he was not going to be pointlessly polite about that.
Jiang Yushi immediately did as he said. What had happened with Li Yi before was because she had not listened to Su Lifeng. Now, of course, she followed his arrangements without question.
“You can deduct it from my salary,” Su Lifeng added after thinking about it, in a very practical tone.
Jiang Yushi rolled her eyes at him. Salaries would soon become meaningless anyway. Adding that line was just him being slick…
“And bring me a burger while you’re at it. Or fried rice. A chicken drumstick works too…” Seeing Jiang Yushi remain silent, Su Lifeng went on.
“Are you done yet?!”
“One more coffee and I will be.”
“…”
In the end, Su Lifeng had to go buy the coffee himself. While they were at it, the two girls dragged him off to buy a new shirt. According to them, while Su Lifeng hadn’t exactly come out shirtless-he had found a worker’s discarded jacket outside the lab to put on-the dusty, grimy look was awkward no matter how you looked at it.
But the moment Su Lifeng saw how pure white the new shirt was, he felt it was kind of a waste. Once tonight was over, this shirt would probably be ruined too.
“This shirt fits you perfectly, sir. And our new arrivals are ten percent off right now, so after the discount it’s only fifteen hundred-“
The sales clerk was still enthusiastically making her pitch when Su Lifeng cut her off. “I’ll take this one. And give me another one too.” Then he turned to Cheng Xiaomei and Jiang Yushi and explained, “If this one gets torn or dirty tonight, I’ll have something to change into tomorrow morning.”
The sales clerk froze. It wasn’t that she had looked down on Su Lifeng because of how he had been dressed earlier. After all, Jiang Yushi, who had come in with him, was obviously some rich young lady, and Cheng Xiaomei was sweet and pretty too… But she had never imagined they would be in that kind of relationship. And with th-three people, no less!
Also, this gentleman looked so refined. Who would have thought he was into such rough play? And these two beautiful girls looked so delicate…
At that thought, the sales clerk’s gaze toward Cheng Xiaomei and Jiang Yushi instantly grew complicated. Still, her excellent professionalism quickly brought her back to her senses, though she couldn’t quite hide the strange smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “Of course, sir. I’ll wrap them up for you right away.”
Su Lifeng himself didn’t think anything of it. He was simply telling the truth. But Jiang Yushi and Cheng Xiaomei lowered their heads at the same time. The two girls, however, were thinking completely different things.
Jiang Yushi thought, It must be because I was overthinking things earlier, so now everything he says sounds easy to misunderstand! That’s right. I must be overthinking it…
Cheng Xiaomei, meanwhile, thought to herself, He really isn’t doing this on purpose? Really?
“Here is your unregistered car.” Jiang Yushi’s bodyguard looked very professional. His presence was steady, and his eyes were sharp and bright. In terms of pure fighting skill, Su Lifeng felt he was probably no match for him at all. But after gaining the Bone Wings, the man was not much different from an ordinary person in front of him.
“Did you tell my father?” Jiang Yushi asked.
The bodyguard shook his head. “No. I got it through a friend of mine. But…”
Seeing the bodyguard glance toward Su Lifeng, Jiang Yushi said in a very trusting tone, “He’s a good friend of mine. He just needs the car for a little errand, so you don’t have to worry. All right, we’re leaving. Oh, and Lifeng, be careful.”
Cheng Xiaomei also waved at Su Lifeng. “You have to be careful. I’m still waiting for you to come pick us up.”
“Okay. You two stay safe too.”
Watching this scene, the bodyguard was practically speechless… With the way they kept looking back every few steps and reminding him over and over, how was this supposed to be just a little errand…
After Su Lifeng hopped into the car, he first drove around a couple of alleys he was familiar with. Only after making sure no one was following him did he slowly head toward Third People’s Hospital.
As dusk fell, the entire area around Third People’s Hospital seemed to grow even quieter.
The moment the car turned onto that street, Su Lifeng had a powerful feeling: countless pairs of eyes had locked onto his car at that instant…
