The Gate of Extinction | Chapter 59

The Mysterious Person Behind It All

Chapter 59 – The Mysterious Person Behind It All

Although they had killed one guard, they still had to get past a security line manned by two more guards before they could reach the warehouse with light spilling out of it. And they had less than three minutes left. Time was slipping away, second by second.

At that moment, in a second-floor room inside that warehouse, a man had just finished sending out a mass message and set down his phone.

Without turning his head, he asked, “What is it?”

“N-nothing. I’m just a little…” Tang Tang, who had been standing hesitantly outside the door for a while, walked in when she heard him.

She had already changed out of her windbreaker and into a pink dress. She looked no different from an ordinary high school girl.

“Nervous?” the man finished for her. “Heh. That’s normal. After tonight, you’ll be reborn. And tonight, I will meet everyone as well.”

“How can that be? Didn’t you say you would stay hidden behind us and protect us?” Tang Tang seemed a little reassured after hearing him, but then she asked in surprise.

“I did. I didn’t want everyone to know who I was so soon either. After all, our existence draws far too much attention. Someone has to remain behind the scenes as support. But Xie Yu is simply too arrogant. From the look of it, he probably won’t show up tonight. No… perhaps he will never show up again. Heh heh heh.”

Tang Tang did not know if it was her imagination, but the man’s laughter sounded faintly mocking to her. However, her attention was quickly drawn to the implication hidden in his words. “Something… happened to Xie Yu?”

“Yes. Do you know anything?” the man asked.

Tang Tang immediately thought of Su Lifeng and his sister, Su Lian. Though she felt it was unlikely, Su Lifeng’s gaze back then had made her scalp prickle and had even made her obey him without realizing it. That look gave her a feeling that maybe this really did have something to do with Su Lifeng…

“No… I called him. He answered twice, then hung up on me,” Tang Tang said with her head lowered.

“Is that so?” The man nodded, but the smile at the corner of his mouth grew complicated.

“Yes, that’s all I know. If there’s nothing else, I’ll go get ready,” Tang Tang said, somewhat flustered.

But just as she turned and reached the doorway, a Shadowy Figure suddenly flashed past. In the next instant, the door slammed shut in front of her with a bang.

The man’s calm voice came from behind her. “No need to hurry. We’ll go out together in a little while. Tonight, you are one of the main characters too…”

Outside the warehouse, Su Lifeng estimated the distance between the two guards, pondered for a moment, then asked Cheng Xiaomei, “Can you take care of one of them? You don’t have to kill him. Just restrain him or knock him out.”

Cheng Xiaomei had not expected him to have seen through her fear. Her face flushed, and she nervously clenched her fists before nodding. “Mm. I… I’ll do it.”

“Then the closer one is yours.” Su Lifeng showed no hint of doubting that she could manage it. As soon as he finished speaking, he darted out.

He was extremely fast. In almost the blink of an eye, Cheng Xiaomei saw him silently closing in on the guard from behind.

Cheng Xiaomei quickly crouched down as well and ran toward her own target. She raised her arm, her heart pounding wildly. Blood rushed straight to her head, making her feel as if she could no longer sense her own existence, or even the movements she was making at that moment.

“I have to… I have to take him down…” Only that one thought remained in Cheng Xiaomei’s mind.

At the same time, Su Lifeng had already rushed up behind the other guard and driven his blade into the man’s body. The guard still tried to struggle, but Su Lifeng had clamped a hand tightly over his mouth, trapping the cry he wanted to let out in his throat. All he could do was feel his life rapidly draining away in despair.

But at that very moment, Cheng Xiaomei’s target vaguely heard the commotion from this side. Just as he turned to look in Su Lifeng’s direction, someone lightly poked him in the back.

“Um…” A sweet yet timid female voice came from behind him, and the guard instinctively turned around in astonishment.

“Sorry!”

A huge mass of Black Thread, accompanied by five long fingers, slammed straight into the guard’s face. The guard’s body twitched once, then went limp and collapsed.

“Let’s go.” Su Lifeng turned his head just in time to see it, and a trace of satisfaction flashed through his eyes.

He had not forcibly demanded that Cheng Xiaomei be sharp and decisive, much less that she kill someone. But if she couldn’t even knock a guard unconscious, then Su Lifeng would have had to reconsider his decision to bring her inside.

Because in that case, she wouldn’t be the only one who got hurt. She would drag Su Lifeng down as well.

“Mm… mm!” Cheng Xiaomei’s spirits instantly lifted. She had finally done it!

Even if she still hadn’t been able to decisively kill anyone…

“I still have to keep working at it,” Cheng Xiaomei told herself, then hurried after Su Lifeng, who had already run toward the warehouse.

“Shh.” As soon as they reached the base of the warehouse wall, Su Lifeng heard the low murmur of many people talking.

He quietly led Cheng Xiaomei to a window and carefully peered inside.

The ground floor of the warehouse was dimly lit. As far as the eye could see, it was packed with moving heads. All of these people seemed to be in excellent physical condition, and right now most of their faces were filled with relaxed smiles, even anticipation.

As Su Lifeng’s gaze swept over their faces, the scene from his Precognitive Vision immediately surfaced in his mind. Reality and the future overlapped in that instant, and Su Lifeng felt his scalp go numb.

“These people still don’t know what they’re about to face, do they?” Su Lifeng shook his head and thought to himself.

The vast majority of them had been lured here by money. Although Su Lifeng didn’t know the details, he did know that Xie Yu’s silver tongue alone could not possibly have fooled so many people into being willing to go to the Spatial Gate. Of course, adventure maniacs like Su Lian were an exception…

But after making a rough estimate of their numbers, Su Lifeng frowned suspiciously. With this many people, even if Xie Yu was a Mutant, there was no way he could take them all and sneak past the blockade into the Spatial Gate, right?

Even if he could manage it, according to what Cheng Xiaomei had said, that entire area was already crawling with Xenospecies. Was Xie Yu planning to lead so many targets there just to die?

“What exactly are they trying to do?” Just then, Su Lifeng suddenly heard the warehouse fall silent.

Click.

As a spotlight abruptly switched on, everyone’s eyes, including Su Lifeng’s and Cheng Xiaomei’s from where they were hiding outside the window, turned toward the second-floor railing, where two figures were illuminated by the light.

The girl in the pink dress standing in front was none other than Tang Tang…
