Chapter 171 – Because I’m Happy, and Because I Can
The accident site was a large building. A few sparks of fire could be seen inside the black smoke. Shattered glass covered the ground, and there was an enormous hole in the second floor of the building.
When Su Lifeng stood at the foot of a wall and looked over, he immediately saw a Xenospecies climbing along the outer wall toward the higher floors. Its movements were extremely agile. Its overall shape was still roughly human, but another human face had grown from the back of its head and was looking downward with open eyes.
After staring at the Xenospecies for a couple of seconds, Su Lifeng turned to Weiliao. “Check the situation around here.”
“There are several more Xenospecies on the left. They’re packed too densely for me to count. There are some on the right too, and a few scattered ones directly ahead of us…” Weiliao kept her eyes open and “looked” for a while before saying, “But the situation inside the building isn’t too clear… There are too many floors. I only know there are a dozen or so Xenospecies moving around on the bottom two floors. That’s all I can tell you.”
“Mm…” Su Lifeng thought for a moment, then said, “A dozen or so isn’t much of a problem. You all come in with me.”
In an instant, everyone else’s faces went pale. That was a dozen or so Xenospecies! Even if Su Lifeng himself was not afraid, what about them?
“Why?” Weiliao asked, biting her lip.
“First, because I feel like it. Second, because I don’t believe what you said, so in a moment, all of you will walk in front. If you think what I’m doing is wrong, you can walk at the very front of everyone and serve as a human alarm for them,” Su Lifeng said.
Of course, his real purpose was not as simple as “because I feel like it.” When his eyes swept over these people, Su Lifeng saw Precognitive Visions of death on all of them. That proved the inside of the building was very dangerous. But dangerous places meant opportunities. The fact that so many Xenospecies had gathered here also proved that point.
If there was even one Xenospecies above E-class, he would have a chance to evolve.
“Go in,” Su Lifeng said.
He had not completely decided to use these people as pathfinding stones. When they were in danger, he would still take the initiative to act. After all, every extra Xenospecies he killed meant a little more to absorb. Tiny amounts would add up eventually. But the danger was still great. Whether they could survive would depend on whether they had that luck.
These people had already forgotten how indifferent their own reactions had been earlier, when they had waited for Su Lifeng to fall after being shot by an arrow. Hearing Su Lifeng say this now, each of them wore the expression of wanting to curse but not daring to. In their resentment, they followed Su Lifeng and quietly entered the building along the greenbelt.
The instant they went inside, a Xenospecies leaped down from above one person’s head. Su Lifeng’s Bone Wings tore it in half in midair, and flesh and blood immediately splashed all over that person.
The man wanted to scream but did not dare. He only felt his legs trembling uncontrollably.
The others had not expected a Xenospecies to appear so quickly, much less expected Su Lifeng’s attacks to become even sharper when he faced Xenospecies. For a moment, they even forgot the curses in their hearts.
“Continue,” Su Lifeng said, his expression unchanged.
Wang Chuan played a little trick and followed at Su Lifeng’s side. After Su Lifeng glanced at him, the corner of his mouth moved, yet he actually said nothing.
That made Wang Chuan secretly rejoice. His earlier attempt to cozy up had still been useful after all!
But he did not know that the reason Su Lifeng had no objection to what he was doing was because Su Lifeng had also seen a Precognitive Vision on this man. As for Wang Chuan’s earlier little act of ingratiation, it actually had no use at all in Su Lifeng’s eyes…
Su Lifeng would never trust someone who had been standing with his companions one moment and could force down immense fear the next just to curry favor with him.
The first floor of the building was a large shopping mall, but by now the glass doors of nearly every shop had been shattered. Bloodstains could be seen on the floor at any time. These brown stains were actually quite old. Some might even have been left before the apocalypse truly arrived. Before the apocalypse, smashing, looting, and robbery had not been rare.
“Tell me where the Xenospecies are in time. Otherwise, if any of them die, it’ll be on you,” Su Lifeng suddenly said to Weiliao.
Weiliao showed a hint of astonishment, but very quickly, she noticed that everyone else was staring at her with nervousness and a hidden trace of anger. When that Xenospecies appeared just now, she had not given any warning at all.
This was originally the method she had wanted to use against Su Lifeng. She had never expected that Su Lifeng would not only mock her without the slightest pity for a woman, but would now turn the exact same thing back on her. Only at this moment did Weiliao suddenly realize that Su Lifeng had played her. In essence, it was clearly Su Lifeng who had forced them to come in and lead the way, but now if someone died, it had become her fault…
“I understand.” Weiliao almost had to swallow the urge to cough blood as she forced those words out one by one.
With Weiliao’s warnings, the rest of the path was mostly frightening but without real danger. During the process, Su Lifeng’s overwhelming strength refreshed the group’s understanding again and again. How was this still human?
Su Lifeng’s attention, however, was not on them at all. He noticed that the bodies of Xenospecies appeared on the ground from time to time. Strangest of all, there were even Mutant corpses.
Had someone already come here ahead of him? Or had the earlier commotion been caused by Xenospecies and Mutants?
Just as they were about to approach the stairs, Weiliao suddenly shouted, “Left!”
A Xenospecies abruptly lunged out from behind a counter. Su Lifeng’s figure blurred and had already gone forward to meet it. But at that moment, someone suddenly screamed. When Weiliao turned to look, she discovered that another Xenospecies had secretly crawled over along the ceiling. As Su Lifeng was meeting the first Xenospecies, it suddenly leaped down, and the Black Threads emerging from its body drilled into a boy’s mouth.
In barely one second, the boy’s body shriveled. Then the Xenospecies pounced toward the next person. This Xenospecies had abnormally thin legs and extremely strong jumping ability. After absorbing one person, its body had clearly swollen. With a single leap, it landed on another person’s body.
Although Su Lifeng had rushed over in time, another corpse with a twisted neck had still appeared among them.
Two people died in the blink of an eye. Everyone was still shaken, while Su Lifeng glanced at the Xenospecies corpse. This jumping Xenospecies was close to F-class, yet it could only move around downstairs and did not dare go up. That meant there had to be an E-class Xenospecies above, or perhaps something even stronger.
“Upstairs,” Su Lifeng said to them.
This time, everyone looked at Weiliao. Wang Chuan spoke without the slightest hesitation. “You go first.”
Weiliao looked at them in disbelief, but with Su Lifeng saying nothing, and everyone else wearing indifferent expressions, she could only grit her teeth and walk to the front.
