Chapter 27 – Survivors
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
Wen Yu drew in a deep breath of fresh air and casually took out a pack of cigarettes from his Spatial Ring.
Cigarettes-now this was good stuff. After lighting one, he took a hard drag, feeling the burn of smoke in his lungs. Wen Yu exhaled in satisfaction.
"Wait a little longer. Someone should be able to make it out."
What Wen Yu had done wasn't exactly honorable, but that didn't stop him from waiting for them in a safe spot. He owed Li Quan'an a favor; if he couldn't help this time, there was always next time.
Of course, if Li Quan'an died, then Wen Yu couldn't be blamed for not keeping his promise.
One-Eye lay curled up by Wen Yu's feet. Outside of combat, Strong Healing activated; the shallow wounds on One-Eye's body healed rapidly. In just one minute, the injuries were almost completely gone.
Just as Wen Yu was leisurely enjoying the warm sunlight, a commotion came from not far away.
"Boss, there are living people running out from the pile of plants."
A faint voice rang out, but in front of Wen Yu's formidable strength, it was captured clearly.
Ignoring the unknown humans, Wen Yu swept a calm glance toward the distant shrubs, then once again returned his gaze to the Mutated Vine.
"Idiot. They've already heard you. Come on-let's go out and take a look."
Another voice sounded. Then the sounds of footsteps came from the shrubs, and several humans in tattered Protective Suits filed out one after another.
Before they even got close, an arrogant voice had already carried over.
"Listen up, Survivor ahead. You've entered the territory of Chaihe Town. This place is under Fei-Ge's management now. If you know what's good for you, hand over your Protective Suit, your Steel Blade, and the food in your hands. Then come back to the Camp with me to do hard labor-maybe the brothers will toss you a bite to eat."
Wen Yu gave the Survivors ahead a cursory glance and snorted with disdain.
He didn't know what things were like in Chaihe Town, but these Class Holders were really living in misery.
There were six of them in total. Only half carried Steel Blades; the others had ordinary things like shovels and broken axes. Honestly, Wen Yu didn't even know whether weapons like that could still hurt him.
Unwilling to waste time with these weaklings, Wen Yu bent down, picked up a small stone from the roadside, and flicked it with his finger.
The stone shot straight out from Wen Yu's hand and struck the forehead of the man who had been shouting, moving at terrifying speed.
With a "bang," the Class Holder who had been shouting felt a huge force explode from his forehead. With his eyes still open, he could even see the dust from the stone shattering.
"Uh." He looked at his teammates' blank faces, then at Wen Yu in the distance, who was watching them with a teasing expression. Without another word, he passed out on the spot.
"Damn it." The Class Holder leading the group saw his teammate collapse and cursed bitterly.
"Son of a bitch-when things are going well he acts tough, and when things aren't he plays dead. This Kid really knows how to mess with people."
He kicked the man lying on the ground hard. Seeing that the guy didn't make a sound, the leader hesitated.
He turned and looked again at Wen Yu in the distance, and his heart jolted.
The Protective Suit on Wen Yu's body was slightly different from the ones they were wearing.
"Level 2. We've really screwed up."
"Level 2? Boss, you're not seeing things, are you?"
"Damn-doesn't that mean he's the same level as Tian-Ge? We can't afford to provoke him. What do we do now?"
The lead Class Holder's expression flickered as he weighed it for a long time. Then he clasped his hands toward Wen Yu in the distance. "Big brother, something came up at home. We'll be going now."
Before anyone could react, he turned and was about to dive into the bushes.
"Cough, cough." Wen Yu was amused by these clowns and choked directly on a mouthful of smoke. Seeing the few of them about to run-so much so that they didn't even bother with the teammate lying on the ground-
Wen Yu immediately shouted, "Stop. Come back. I need to ask you something."
Seeing that the few people in the distance heard Wen Yu's shout but not only didn't turn around-rather, they spread their legs and sprinted off at full speed-Wen Yu pinched out the cigarette butt.
"Go, One-Eye. Bring those guys back to me. Alive."
"Woof woof woof."
One-Eye answered simply and shot off.
In less than two minutes, the sound rang out again.
Several Class Holders walked back with faces full of misery; behind them loomed One-Eye's massive silhouette.
"Back already? Got things settled at home?"
Wen Yu looked at the middle-aged man in front with a teasing expression.
"Haha. I thought it over carefully-leaving you here by yourself, Young Brother, really wasn't decent. So, aren't we back to take a look!"
The middle-aged man laughed awkwardly.
"Relax. I'm just asking about the situation. No need to do anything."
Wen Yu reassured them. Seeing their expressions steady a little, he asked directly,
"How are things in Chaihe Town now?"
Hearing Wen Yu's question, the leading middle-aged man's face turned very ugly.
"Things in Chaihe Town are terrible-so terrible you could say humanity is on the verge of collapse. If not for Fei-Ge and Tian-Ge leading us to run fast, I'm afraid there wouldn't be a single living person left in all of Chaihe Town!"
Speaking of what happened some time ago, the middle-aged man was clearly still shaken.
"Sigh."
Wen Yu let out a sigh.
In these small northeastern towns, with no Military units stationed nearby, relying on Ordinary People alone to survive was simply too hard.
Maybe the capital and some big cities would be much better.
Thinking of the capital-a place he hadn't visited in either of his two lives-Wen Yu drifted off for a moment.
A rustling sound came from behind and snapped him back.
"Wait a moment. There are a few more people behind us."
When Li Quan'an and Sun Ruixing, along with three other Class Holders, led Bai Xiao'an and Bai Feifei out, Wen Yu immediately went up to meet them.
"That's it?" Wen Yu raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah. Everyone's dead. Only a few of us are left."
Li Quan'an's expression was a little grim. Even though he had known this breakout would be extremely dangerous, the death toll still exceeded his expectations.
Looking at Wen Yu's expressionless face, a wave of bitterness rose in Li Quan'an's heart.
This man wasn't clearing the way at all-he was simply looking out for his own escape.
"Mm. Whoever can make it out, makes it out. As for those who didn't, they were just unlucky."
Wen Yu had no guilt toward this Cannon Fodder at all.
Li Quan'an only felt a surge of resentment rise up, then he forced it back down with great effort. What was the use of complaining? If complaining worked, what would you need strength for?
"Who are those people?" Li Quan'an had no choice but to focus his attention on the unfamiliar faces.
"Survivors from Chaihe Town. I saw them as soon as I came out. Perfect timing to get a sense of the situation-you can come listen too."
