Chapter 56 – The Cry for Help He Foresaw
“Bro, what is this place?” Su Lian asked curiously as she watched Su Lifeng drive into a run-down district of old apartment buildings.
“It’s a warehouse I prepared for the future. Most of the supplies are stockpiled here. Of course, if I can, I’ll prepare another supply warehouse too.” Su Lifeng finally stopped outside an unremarkable little building and answered her.
“Mm, this place really is pretty remote. And it’s easier to keep hidden than some lone house sitting out by itself,” Su Lian said.
“From now on, this place is yours too. Remember the location. Also, this key and this money are for you.” What Su Lifeng handed her was the money he had taken from Xie Yu’s wallet-a thick stack that looked to be more than ten thousand yuan. To Su Lifeng, however, the money was hardly any different from paper.
But to Su Lian, this was the largest amount of spending money she had ever received in her life, even if the source made her feel a little awkward…
“Thanks, Bro!”
“All right, all right, stop kissing me. This isn’t just for you to buy random stuff with. If there are any supplies you want to stockpile, take it and go buy them. If it’s not enough, we’ll talk.” Su Lifeng’s words did nothing to dampen Su Lian’s enthusiasm. It seemed that even a girl as unconventional as Su Lian still loved to shop.
As they spoke, Su Lifeng opened the trunk and dragged Xie Yu’s corpse out.
In his view, if he wanted Su Lian to mature as quickly as possible, it would be best for her to come into contact with things like this too.
“That room is stacked with smoked meat and canned food. The other room has rice. Also, it’d be best if you didn’t open that freezer so casually…”
“Ah! Why didn’t you say so earlier?! You did that on purpose, didn’t you?!” Su Lian cried out in shock.
Su Lifeng smiled, put Xie Yu’s corpse inside, then went to the side and washed his hands. “You’ll have plenty of chances to see corpses in the future. Are you going to scream like that every time?”
“Bro, how long are you going to keep these corpses here? Did you kill the other one too?” Su Lian’s curiosity was simply too strong. Although she had been startled, she still couldn’t help standing on tiptoe and peering into the freezer.
“Yeah, that one was a Xenospecies. But keeping the bodies here really isn’t all that safe. I’m considering moving them,” Su Lifeng said.
Before he knew it, he had already collected two pieces of experimental material…
After returning home, Su Lifeng saw that an unfamiliar sedan was already parked downstairs. He figured Jiang Yushi and the others were most likely back, and immediately felt much more at ease.
When he passed the first floor, Su Lifeng stopped and rang that neighbor’s doorbell.
To his slight disappointment, however, there was no response from inside. They probably hadn’t gotten off work yet…
He had just reached his own door and hadn’t even taken out his key when the door suddenly opened.
Jiang Yushi was wearing a pale floral apron, as if she had been waiting behind the door the whole time. The moment she opened it, she revealed a smile. “You’re back… huh? And this is?”
As the smile froze on Jiang Yushi’s face, Su Lian was also staring at her with wide eyes.
Who was this?!
Had she opened the wrong door or what?!
“Yushi-Jie, is Lifeng back?” Another cheerful female voice came from the kitchen, and right after that, Cheng Xiaomei appeared at the doorway with a spoon still in her hand.
Likewise, she froze for a moment, while Su Lian’s mouth fell open as well. She looked at the two pretty girl-like young women, each beautiful in her own way, then turned to glance at Su Lifeng, who was smiling and nodding at them. “Bro, what happened to not bringing a girl home?”
Su Lifeng paused, then explained in sudden realization, “I wasn’t the one who brought them back.”
“Huh?!” Su Lian was even more shocked now.
Did that mean they had come here on their own?
No way… With her brother’s way with girls, even sweet-talking one would be hard enough. But two at once?!
Of course, there was no way she could say that out loud. It was just written all over her face.
Jiang Yushi was the first to recover. She looked Su Lian over with interest, then smiled and said, “So you’re Su Lifeng’s sister? You’re so pretty. Um, come in first and let’s talk inside. Dinner’s almost ready anyway…” At this point, her face suddenly flushed. “Though most of it was made by Xiaomei. I mostly just got in the way…”
“Not at all. Yushi-Jie, you just haven’t had much practice before. You’ll get better at it over time,” Cheng Xiaomei said quickly with a smile, having also come back to her senses.
Over dinner, Su Lian learned from Jiang Yushi about the relationship between the three of them and everything that had happened recently. Only then did an expression of sudden realization appear on her face.
But knowing was one thing. She still gave Su Lifeng a meaningful look, then secretly gave him a thumbs-up under the table, leaving Su Lifeng torn between laughter and exasperation.
After that, Su Lian briefly explained her own situation. “I’ve studied martial arts, so I’m decent at basic combat. As for other things… I guess I have quite a bit of wilderness survival experience. Oh, and I really like learning about computers, so…”
“Wow! That’s amazing! Then, Xiao Lian, are you a hacker?” Cheng Xiaomei asked, her face full of admiration.
“I… I guess so. I just hope I can help my brother…” Su Lian nodded a little shyly.
“I thought your brother was already impressive enough, but it turns out you’re a top student too. Don’t worry, you’ll definitely be able to help.” As Cheng Xiaomei said this, her eyes flickered slightly, as if she was also referring to herself.
“Stop praising me, eat! Eat, eat!” Su Lian was clearly not used to being complimented and hurriedly changed the subject.
It was rare for the atmosphere to be this relaxed. Although Su Lifeng did not say much, a faint smile lingered at the corners of his mouth the entire time.
But just then, the environment around him suddenly changed.
The dining table, the floor, the walls, and the three girl figures in front of him vanished one after another. In an instant, everything around him plunged into darkness.
Immediately afterward, it was like old newspapers pasted on a wall had been torn away, revealing the mottled painting that had originally been beneath them. Countless human silhouettes appeared around Su Lifeng.
Those silhouettes kept walking past him, as though gathering somewhere up ahead.
What was up ahead? Su Lifeng was suddenly seized by an overwhelming desire to know.
At that moment, one of the figures in the crowd ahead abruptly turned around, its expression terrified. “Help!!!”
Su Lifeng snapped back to his senses.
In reality, he was still sitting at home, beside a small tea table Jiang Yushi and the others had dug up from who knew where, chopsticks still in hand.
“That figure in the Precognitive Vision looked like Tang Tang,” Su Lifeng thought.
As for the actual location where the scene took place, it was probably Jinli Warehouse.
Regardless of whether he had seen a Precognitive Vision or not, Su Lifeng had planned to make a trip to Jinli Warehouse tonight. But the eerie atmosphere he had just witnessed instantly put him a little more on guard.
Perhaps Xie Yu’s accomplice would not be as easy to deal with as Xie Yu…
“That makes sense. On the surface, Xie Yu was the only one acting in this matter, while his accomplice was smart enough to hide behind the scenes. But no matter what, that person has to die tonight.”
At the same time, Su Lifeng was also somewhat puzzled. What exactly had caused all those people in the Precognitive Vision, and Tang Tang’s cry for help?
