Chapter 81 – I See You
Through the car window, Zhu Hao glanced at the factory not far away, then turned to look at Fang Li, whom he had secured in the passenger seat with the seat belt.
Probably because the car had stopped, Fang Li slowly came to. Then her eyes flew wide open. The moment she woke, she began to struggle, only to discover that her hands had already been tied behind her back with shoelaces, and a strip of cloth was gagging her mouth. All she could make were muffled “mmph” sounds.
At the same time, she stared at her surroundings in terror… One look was enough to tell this was the outskirts. Wild grass stretched everywhere in great swaths. There was a factory nearby, but the only bit of light came from the guard booth…
Why had he brought her to such a gloomy, remote place?!
Zhu Hao smiled at Fang Li and said, “All right, stop wasting your strength. If you stay quiet, it’ll be better for everyone. I told you, I only want you to help me identify someone.”
“Mmph, mmph…”
“I know what you want to say. I’m not the monster you think I am. The person I’m asking you to identify, he’s the one who might be.” As Zhu Hao spoke, he opened the car door and stepped out. Fang Li stared at his back in horror, because she could clearly see Zhu Hao holding a wrench in one hand, then hiding it behind his back.
“Mmph!” Fang Li slammed herself desperately against the car window, but all she could do was watch helplessly as Zhu Hao approached the factory gate.
“Good evening, sir.”
At the sudden sound of such a mild voice, the guard quickly tore his eyes away from the little television and stood up. “Good evening, Manager Zhu!”
He was a little confused. He hadn’t seen any vehicles approaching on the surveillance feed…
Had Manager Zhu come on foot?
“Hey, have you seen Team Leader Su?” Zhu Hao kept one hand behind his back, a modest smile on his face.
“Yes, yes, he just came back…” the guard said with a nod.
“Then he’s in the laboratory now?” Zhu Hao asked, still smiling.
There were cameras inside the laboratory, and Su Lifeng had even brought in a college freshman to sit there all day watching the surveillance footage.
As soon as he got close, Su Lifeng would definitely know. Bringing Fang Li along would be out of the question.
He had to find a way to make Su Lifeng come out…
“Probably…” the guard said with an ingratiating smile. How would he know any of that?
“How about this? Let me in, and call the laboratory.” Zhu Hao thought for barely a second before lifting his head, his expression perfectly normal.
“Just say there’s a visitor and ask him to come out. Don’t mention me.” After entering, Zhu Hao picked up the phone, but then handed it to the guard.
The guard froze for a moment, then turned and made the call.
He was being paid to do a job. Although he felt Manager Zhu was acting very strangely, he didn’t have the right to refuse.
Besides, surely he wouldn’t make trouble for a mere guard like him, right?
Zhu Hao, meanwhile, turned toward the surveillance equipment beside him. Suddenly, he reached out and touched the hard disk recorder.
“Mm, yes, all right…” The guard had just put down the phone when he happened to see Zhu Hao yank the hard drive off.
“Man… Manager Zhu, what are you doing?” the guard asked, his eyes widening in shock.
Zhu Hao tore down the recorder and held it in his hand. Then he turned to look at the guard, a faint smile appearing at the corner of his mouth. The wrench hidden in his other hand suddenly swung up…
“Mmph!”
Fang Li was still ramming herself against the car window, but soon her pupils shrank, and she recoiled in terror.
Zhu Hao got back into the car, tossed the recorder onto the back seat, and set the wrench down beside him.
Fang Li glanced at it and saw that it was indeed covered in blood. She immediately realized that it had still happened after all… Trembling in fear, her eyes began to redden.
“In a moment, just watch carefully and tell me if it’s him. If it is, nod…” Zhu Hao said, glancing at Fang Li with a gentle expression. “If you don’t answer, you’ll be the next one to die. Do you understand?”
Fang Li finally could not hold back her tears. Under Zhu Hao’s stare, she slowly nodded in the end.
From here, the factory was not that far away… Zhu Hao gripped the steering wheel with both hands, a complicated flicker of excitement flashing through his eyes.
“Tonight was ruined… but if I can identify the culprit, I’ll have made a huge contribution. When that time comes, I won’t have to do these things anymore, and I won’t have to watch anyone’s mood,” Zhu Hao thought, his emotions surging. At the same time, he felt a bitter resentment.
Why had someone interrupted things when everything had been going so well? Now she would think he was useless…
Fortunately, there was still a way to salvage it.
He looked at Fang Li, then fixed his attention on the front gate.
Before long, a figure in a white lab coat appeared beneath the lights.
The moment he saw Su Lifeng walk up to the guardroom window and peer inside, Zhu Hao immediately asked in a trembling voice, “Is it him?”
Fang Li’s eyes had already gone wide. The instant she clearly saw Su Lifeng, she was certain. This was the person who had urged her to go back!
But why would he be here? And from the look of him, he was clearly still working…
“No… That can’t be right. He obviously wasn’t among those survivors. Then the back I saw after I came out… was it really him?” Fang Li thought in shock.
“Is it him?”
Hearing Zhu Hao bark the question, Fang Li thought of Su Lifeng’s warning to her… She knew she was a coward, and she knew Zhu Hao was insane and terrifying, but…
“You think I won’t know if you don’t answer? From the look on your face, it’s him, isn’t it? Haha, what a coincidence. He really hid himself well!” Zhu Hao’s words instantly made Fang Li feel cold all over. She froze for a second, then with a loud bang, slammed into the car window with all her strength.
Along with the muffled impact, a large amount of her blood was left on the car window, and she passed out.
“Bitch!” Zhu Hao cursed. He hurriedly started the car, preparing to turn around and leave.
Now that he had confirmed it, he had no intention of staying here. He had no plans to fight a monster like that.
But there were plenty of ways to use this monster’s identity to get him killed.
No matter what, he had already earned the credit… But that bitch’s death wish was one thing. The problem was, she had just made such a loud noise.
Just then, Zhu Hao saw Su Lifeng run out of the front gate and immediately look in his direction.
The moment the car started, Zhu Hao stomped on the gas.
Seeing Su Lifeng charge toward him, Zhu Hao felt his scalp prickle, but at the same time, a strange excitement rose inside him. “Hahaha, you’re too late!”
Su Lifeng had just reached the gate in confusion, but he did not see a single person there.
He looked in through the window, but the sight inside made his scalp tighten.
A corpse… The guard’s head and face had been smashed to a bloody pulp, and an unbelievable terror still lingered in his eyes.
Before Su Lifeng could react, a faint muffled sound caught his attention. Then came the sound of a car engine starting.
“They’re still outside!”
Su Lifeng immediately gave chase and happened to see Zhu Hao’s pale yet crazed face inside that sedan…
