Chapter 84 – Eyes Watching from the Dark
Su Lifeng had always found the way Ye Nannan spoke, and the look in her eyes when she gazed at him, a little unsettling… But when he had tried to feel things out through Shen Fei, he hadn’t discovered anything strange happening to her. If anything, the strange one was Ye Long.
Now that they had run into each other, Su Lifeng looked her over again from head to toe, but still couldn’t see any sign of a Xenospecies on her.
Su Lifeng shifted his attention back to Ye Long… Why had Ye Long made that post? Who had contacted him afterward? Ye Long himself was probably the only one who knew the answers. Su Lifeng was just about to invite him to sit down at a nearby cafe when he saw Ye Long give him the slightest shake of the head.
Hm?
“He’s worried about something… Is it Ye Nannan after all?” Su Lifeng’s heart gave a jolt, but his face remained calm as he said, “What a coincidence.”
“It’s not a coincidence. I came here specifically to find Lifeng-Ge,” Ye Nannan said.
The moment Ye Nannan said that, Ye Long froze. Then an extremely nervous look flashed across his face. “Nannan, let’s go home. It’s so late. Su must have come to campus for something…”
“I saw monsters near our house,” Ye Nannan went on, ignoring him completely.
As soon as Su Lifeng heard her start talking, he had subconsciously braced himself to hear something like, “I came to eat you”… In fact, if that had been what she said, he probably would not have been too surprised.
But what Ye Nannan said was something else entirely…
For a moment, Su Lifeng was the one left stunned. It took him a while before he asked, “How do you know they were monsters?”
He glanced at Ye Long and found that Ye Long looked just as shocked, clearly not having expected Ye Nannan to suddenly say this either. Very soon, however, a thoughtful look appeared on Ye Long’s face. When he looked back at Su Lifeng, there was even an inexplicable trace of sorrow in his eyes…
“Because they’re the same as those people on the island,” Ye Nannan said. “I feel like they’re looking for someone, but they don’t know exactly where that person is…”
“The post.” Su Lifeng understood at once. It seemed that the post really had come to the attention of the Xenospecies, or perhaps the Mutants. It was possible that among the people who had left messages wanting to meet Ye Long were some of them.
Ye Long seemed to have thought of something as well, and his expression immediately turned ugly. Seeing his reaction, Su Lifeng could be certain that his guess was right.
Ye Long had made the post, and those people had come looking for him.
But why had Ye Nannan suddenly brought this up?
“Lifeng-Ge, can you help us?” Ye Nannan asked.
“Why would you think to…” Su Lifeng was about to blurt something out, but he suddenly calmed himself and replied, “If you really think they’re monsters, then call the police. I’m sorry, but I can’t help you either.”
Ye Nannan lifted her eyes and looked at him, her lips pressed together without a word.
“But if you do feel like you’re in serious trouble, you might as well give me a call,” Su Lifeng continued. Then he reached his hand toward Ye Long. “Give me your phone. I’ll save my number for you.”
Ye Long froze for a second, glanced at Ye Nannan, and then handed him the phone.
Su Lifeng tapped on it for a moment and quickly handed it back. Ye Long stared at the screen. The corner of his eye twitched almost imperceptibly, and then he forced out a faint smile. “All right, I understand. In any case, thank you for your kindness, Su.”
“I still have things to do, so I’ll be going,” Su Lifeng said with a nod.
His hint had been obvious enough. Ye Long should be able to understand it…
But after Su Lifeng’s back had disappeared into the distance, Ye Nannan, who was still waving at him with a smile, suddenly said, “Daddy, what did he type on your phone? Don’t lie to me. It was only a few seconds, but the number of times his fingers tapped wasn’t just enough to enter a phone number and a name… Nannan studied math properly, you know.”
“He… left me the name of a place,” Ye Long said.
“Really? What place?” Ye Nannan turned her head, her expression innocent and adorable.
Ye Long tightened his grip on his phone and answered, “Just… a gathering.”
Ye Nannan suddenly reached out and hugged his arm. Looking up, she asked, “Dad, are you going to take me?”
Ye Long’s body jolted. His eyes suddenly reddened, but he still forced his voice to remain calm. “Yes. I was planning to take you…”
“Really? That’s wonderful.”
“So, Nannan, about those monsters nearby, let’s not trouble Su with them… I think they’ll leave very soon.”
“Mm. Now that I think about it, I think so too.”
“That’s good. Well, I hope they don’t die nearby. It would scare Shen Fei and the others…”
“Okay, I know.”
After saying goodbye to Ye Long and his daughter, Su Lifeng kept thinking back on what the two of them had said.
Ye Nannan had suddenly brought up those monsters… At her age, it was possible she had simply asked for help without thinking.
But after Ye Long froze for a moment, he had shown an expression that said, “I understand.” That made Su Lifeng feel that something was off.
And he kept getting the sense that Ye Long had deliberately put that expression on for him to see…
“What did he understand?” Su Lifeng thought hard, then suddenly realized it.
A test. That had been a test.
His reaction in that instant had definitely been seen.
Although it could be interpreted as shock, someone paying close attention might not see it that way.
Then after Ye Long got the result of his test, why had he looked at him with such a sorrowful gaze?
“Forget it. No point thinking about it. Ye Long is definitely planning something. In that case, all I need to do is wait for him to make contact.” Su Lifeng quickly shook off this speculation built on too few clues. But just as he was about to hail a cab, a scene suddenly appeared before his eyes.
Countless bolts of lightning appeared over a city. In the middle of a torrential downpour, a massive gash suddenly tore open in the road. Cars speeding along the street plunged straight into the fissure. The crack continued to spread, and as huge amounts of rainwater poured in, a hand suddenly stretched out from the pitch-black gap.
Pale white bones. Terrifying strength… That enormous hand gripped the edge of the fissure and violently tore off a huge slab of concrete.
“Boom!”
Lightning flashed across the sky, and the hand vanished without a trace.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, the people around it began screaming one after another.
“Ah!”
“Did you see that? What was that?!”
“Is this a ground collapse? Was that some kind of underground creature?!”
Boom!
A huge mass of Black Mist suddenly surged out of the fissure…
“Hah!” At the edge of the road, Su Lifeng abruptly snapped awake. A layer of cold sweat had already broken out across his forehead.
It had appeared again…
In other words, the High-class Xenospecies were still continuously trying to tear open a Spatial Gate and come through?
Although it was only a Precognitive Vision, for some reason, the instant that Giant Hand appeared, Su Lifeng felt as if a pair of eyes in the darkness had locked onto him all at once…
