Chapter 87 – Living… for Something!
Gouzi had felt very busy these past two days.
He had been helping Su Lifeng keep an eye on several nearby nightclubs, including the one where Xiao Liu worked, which he occasionally went to check on as well.
But Xiao Liu’s place was also the one that creeped him out the most… because it had already been sealed off, and it was deathly quiet.
Quite a few people had died there, but the surveillance footage was gone, and the two eyewitnesses who could best explain what had happened had vanished too.
Xiao Liu had taken the hostess and run. He had promised Su Lifeng he wouldn’t hurt her, then gone into hiding with her.
Gouzi had no idea where Su-Ge had gotten his information… because Su Lifeng had told Xiao Liu directly to hide as best he could, since he wouldn’t need to hide for much longer anyway.
The more Gouzi thought about those words, the colder he felt.
As for what Su Lifeng had instructed him to do, it was to go take a look from time to time, as long as he could guarantee his own safety.
Today, he felt things were relatively safe.
After driving around to the area near Xiao Liu’s nightclub, Gouzi found that the surroundings were indeed still pitch-black. There wasn’t a soul in sight.
“Good. As long as nothing’s happening.” Gouzi felt a little relieved as he thought this. At the same time, he turned off the headlights and hid himself in the darkness.
Since he was already here, he had to watch for at least half an hour.
But just as that half hour was about to pass peacefully, a sudden burst of noise came from not far away.
Gouzi immediately jumped in fright. After taking a closer look, he frowned and cursed, “Damn it. A bunch of drunks. Just my luck.”
That was what he said, but he immediately fished out his phone with one hand, pulled a knife from under the seat with the other, and crouched down to hide.
The noise came from several pairs of men and women who were clearly drunk. People like that were still common around here.
But Gouzi soon realized that his caution had saved him, because just as the group was about to pass by the nightclub, one man and one woman suddenly opened their mouths wide and sprayed out countless strands of Black Thread.
“Ah!” One of the men instantly sobered up and screamed as he sprinted frantically in Gouzi’s direction.
The female Xenospecies gave a cold laugh. Her legs, which had looked very sexy a moment ago, suddenly bulged with blocks of muscle, and quite a bit of hair sprouted from them as well. After only a few leaps, she pounced on the man and knocked him to the ground. He only had time to shout, “Help!” before he went completely still.
Only after the two Xenospecies had dragged everyone into the nightclub did Gouzi, whose whole body had gone stiff, slowly raise his head.
The few drops of blood the man had left behind were less than five meters from his car…
“I can’t believe these monsters still dare to come back and use this place… Su-Ge guessed right.” Gouzi wanted to make a call, but just then he noticed several more men and women approaching.
Three or four groups arrived in succession like this…
“No, that’s not right. They must have some kind of plan, right?” Gouzi had seen this kind of situation before. It was just like when he used to attend meetings with his boss.
But if he waited until Su Lifeng got here, wouldn’t their meeting already be over?
Gouzi knew he was timid. It was precisely because he was timid that even after spending several years as a thug, he still hadn’t done as well as the younger guys who had entered the scene after him.
But now, he no longer cared about hollow reputation like that. What he cared about was something more long-term.
After interacting with Su Lifeng a few times, however, Gouzi was starting to feel more and more that simply providing a bit of information and helping out with small tasks was far from enough. And he himself was not satisfied with this connection that felt more like a “transaction” than anything else.
He needed greater protection, and with Su Lifeng, that was something he had to exchange for real value.
When he saw that no more Xenospecies were going in or out, Gouzi, who had been fighting a long battle with himself, finally gripped his knife, quietly opened the car door, and slipped out.
He had been to the place where Xiao Liu worked several times before. As long as he was careful, he should be able to find out what these monsters were doing.
But the moment he moved, the front door suddenly opened. Gouzi, who had only just managed to work up his courage, felt like his soul had been scared clean out of his body. He practically rolled and crawled his way under the car.
Through the gap beneath it, he saw a figure.
But it was not the girl in the white dress from the surveillance footage. It was another unfamiliar young man.
Still, whoever he was, he was a monster anyway… Gouzi thought, his whole body still trembling.
After the unfamiliar Young Xenospecies walked out, he began speaking. “Qin Moyun’s evolution was interrupted. She has no value anymore, and absorbing her wouldn’t help with recovery or repairs. Once we find a suitable target, deal with her then.”
There were clearly other monsters inside the door, but none of them answered. They probably only nodded.
“I’ll head back. I’ll handle the matter involving that director as soon as I can. It isn’t easy to get close to him right now. The Soldier Types that died here earlier were not our companions. The Wisdom Species are currently investigating who broke the rules, so they have no time to bother with you for now. And about Jiangnan Group, urge that human named Zhu Hao to get moving as quickly as possible…”
The young man spoke for quite a while longer before the nightclub’s door closed.
Then the surroundings sank back into silence, leaving only the sound of the young man’s footsteps as he started moving.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Gouzi lay on the ground, his forehead drenched in sweat as he watched those feet draw closer and closer. Every step sounded to him like a death knell.
“Hurry up and leave…” Gouzi covered his mouth and nose, but he could not stop his body from shaking.
Yet just as the young man passed the car, his footsteps suddenly stopped.
The Young Xenospecies glanced at the car, then slowly turned around.
Gouzi instantly felt as if his heart were about to leap out of his chest.
The Young Xenospecies walked all the way to the side of the car. Then he suddenly bent down, pressing his eyes close to the window.
His pupils abruptly turned prism-shaped and gave off a faint green glow.
Everything inside the car was laid bare before him, but there was no one to be seen.
The Young Xenospecies withdrew his gaze expressionlessly, then left.
“I’m saved…” Only after a long while did Gouzi finally let out a long breath.
He took out his phone and reported everything that had just happened to Su Lifeng.
After what he had just gone through, there was no way he could muster the courage to get any closer and take another look. Fortunately, that unfamiliar young man seemed to have revealed a great deal of information he did not understand.
“That’s what happened. My guess is they figured no one would come into this nightclub anymore, so they simply turned it into one of their nearby strongholds. But I heard that monster mention something about Wisdom Species. It sounded really powerful… Still, that monster just now didn’t find me, so maybe today I should just…” Gouzi said, sounding deeply relieved.
But right then, he suddenly shut his mouth.
Because as he was talking, he heard a crisp footstep.
Tap.
The sound was right behind him.
“Ah!!!! Su-Ge, avenge me! Avenge me! It’s a boy! He has a tattoo, a star…”
Su Lifeng listened to the screams from the phone, the desperate roars, and the muffled crash of the car being flipped over. For a moment, his fist clenched hard…
He stayed silent. Silent for a very, very long time, until the call on the other end turned into a busy tone.
