Chapter 99 – A Deadly Disaster
How could Jiang Fusheng, experienced as he was, fail to see the way Jiang Yushi looked at Su Lifeng?
And what Su Lifeng had said did not sound false, either. At the very least, Jiang Fusheng heard a kind of confidence in his tone. He could not help taking another look at this young man, and then he had to sigh to himself… With such a refined, scholarly appearance, he really was deceptively harmless. Those eyes of his were colder by far than any of Jiang Fusheng’s bodyguards. And almost every one of his bodyguards was a retired soldier, men who had seen blood with their own hands.
“I really do want to know what exactly happened to him…” Jiang Fusheng shook his head. For the first time, he felt he might have misjudged someone. Su Lifeng, who had once seemed perfectly ordinary in his eyes, had suddenly become mysterious.
“President Jiang, this is simply…”
Liang Junyu had only just opened his mouth when Jiang Fusheng glanced at him with a faint frown. He immediately shut up, though the look he gave Su Lifeng grew even darker. Jiang Fusheng had reprimanded him again and again, and it was all because of this Su Lifeng! He had thought that after following them here, he would get to watch Su Lifeng be humiliated, preferably see him fall right back to rock bottom in an instant. Who would have thought that after Su Lifeng said just a few words, Jiang Fusheng’s attitude would change so much?
Of course, what he did not know was that even if Su Lifeng had performed poorly, Jiang Fusheng would only have been disappointed. He would not truly have humiliated him. In that case, however, he would have treated the laboratory as repayment for the life-saving favor. As for Jiang Yushi, he would certainly have taken her away with him.
“All right, young man. Since you’ve put it that way…” Jiang Fusheng stood up. After straightening his clothes, he extended his hand to Su Lifeng once more, but this time his attitude was much more solemn. “I’ll trust you for the time being. Just this once.”
Su Lifeng paused for a moment, then stood as well. He shook Jiang Fusheng’s hand politely and nodded. “Don’t worry.”
“Sigh… A grown daughter really can’t be kept at home,” Jiang Fusheng suddenly said, glancing at Jiang Yushi beside him as he shook his head.
A blush instantly rose across Jiang Yushi’s pretty face, even dyeing her ears red. “Dad, what nonsense are you talking about?”
But when she looked again at Su Lian and Cheng Xiaomei, who were sitting obediently not far away… this atmosphere really did feel a little like meeting the parents!
The only one who still looked perfectly serious was probably Su Lifeng…
He was probably the only one who had not caught on at all!
Jiang Fusheng glanced at Su Lifeng’s reaction and sighed inwardly as well… This boy had no sense of humor!
“But isn’t this exactly what I wanted? I wanted to see whether he’d take the hint and climb along with it.”
After seeing Jiang Fusheng downstairs, a car slowly drove over from nearby.
Jiang Fusheng first sent Liang Junyu into the car, then stayed behind and said to Su Lifeng, “Young man, can you answer one question for me honestly?”
Su Lifeng thought for a moment, then said, “I’ll do my best.”
“…” Jiang Fusheng choked for a second, then waved a hand. “Forget it, I won’t hold that against you. I just want you to answer one question. Do you know whether this disaster is because of that Cruise Ship trip, or because of your current experiment?”
“Both,” Su Lifeng said with a nod.
“Then… is this disaster deadly?” Jiang Fusheng asked again.
Su Lifeng nodded again.
“Compared to war?” Jiang Fusheng asked next.
This time, Su Lifeng still did not take long to consider before answering, “More serious than war. More serious than any war.”
Humans still had the strength to resist for now. But what about when Spatial Gate began opening en masse? What about when High-class Xenospecies came through?
Su Lifeng had always tried his best not to think about those questions. But in truth, every time he threw his life on the line, it was all to prepare for the full-scale apocalypse that was about to arrive…
Jiang Fusheng’s heart sank. If he could, he truly did not want to believe what Su Lifeng had just said. But…
“Recently, the military placed an enormous order with me. I told them I didn’t have enough capital, and for once, they directly allocated the materials to me. No matter how you look at it, that makes no sense. The only explanation is that they no longer need to conserve funds, and those rigid rules have reached the point where no one needs to cling to them anymore.” Jiang Fusheng looked up at Su Lifeng and said, “To be honest, I’ve spent my whole life in business, built myself up from nothing, and I’ve never been afraid. I won’t be afraid this time either. But my daughter is the one person I don’t want to see hurt in any way.”
“I will fully support your laboratory. Also, I actually came here today for another matter. I will have my daughter join the board of directors and begin taking over that batch of military-related orders, as well as all business after that. This will definitely meet with a great deal of resistance, but after hearing what you said today, I no longer have any misgivings. Also… Jiang Qianqian has disappeared. I hope this matter has absolutely nothing to do with you.” After Jiang Fusheng finished speaking, he did not seem to have any intention of waiting for Su Lifeng’s reply. He waved a hand and walked toward the car. “This neighborhood is in a decent location, and the surroundings are relatively safe, but your place is too messy. At least give my daughter a bed. Just a mattress is too much.”
“Uh…” For the first time, Su Lifeng found himself somewhat at a loss for words. He reached up and scratched his hair, then turned to look into the stairwell.
Jiang Yushi was secretly standing at the bend in the stairs with her arms folded, peeking out. When she saw Su Lifeng turn back, she stuck her tongue out at him playfully, then turned and ran upstairs. There was no telling how much of the conversation between Su Lifeng and Jiang Fusheng she had heard.
“So a mattress really isn’t good enough?” It seemed he would have to break through into that neighbor’s apartment and connect the two places as soon as possible.
After returning home, Su Lifeng felt that Cheng Xiaomei and Su Lian were looking at him very strangely. Cheng Xiaomei pointed toward Su Lian’s room, signaling that Jiang Yushi had already gone into hiding. Su Lian, meanwhile, suddenly pounced over, leaned right up in front of Su Lifeng, stared into his eyes, and asked, “Brother, tell me honestly. What did you do to her when you went out tonight? How did you two go out for one trip and come back having met her dad?”
“…How is the address search going?” Su Lifeng snapped, lightly smacking her on the head as he asked.
Cheng Xiaomei hurriedly turned the computer screen around and said, “There were more than four thousand replies from netizens in total. Xiaolian and I carefully compared them and filtered out over three thousand of them. The rest still need further identification. If none of this batch matches, that’s fine too. People are still replying.”
“Mm. A three-thousand-yuan reward is still pretty attractive. There will definitely be results within the next few days,” Su Lian added.
Su Lifeng nodded, thinking that this really was something they could not rush. The main problem was that there were simply too few clues…
“All right. After I get some rest, I also have something very important to tell you all.”
As for whether to let them choose to become Mutants, Su Lifeng felt it was time to bring it up…
