Chapter 108 – Sneak Attack
“It’s really creepy in here…”
As soon as Ling Mo walked into the library, he felt a chill. The spacious hall was filled with long tables and computers, as well as towering bookshelves, creating a complex environment at first glance.
Ling Mo took just two steps in before stopping in disgust.
He had stepped on a piece of torn clothing, the blood on it long dried. Underneath the scrap lay half a hand bone, which made a sharp “crack” when he stepped on it.
At first glance, it seemed like no survivors had been here for a long time. However, upon closer inspection, Ling Mo noticed that this hand bone had been stepped on countless times, making it extremely fragile. His step was the final blow that caused it to fall apart completely.
Since survivors had been here before, there shouldn’t be too many zombies inside… But for safety’s sake, it was best to check thoroughly.
Fortunately, the three of them could split up to search. Ling Mo randomly chose a direction and slowly walked into the rows of bookshelves.
Because the main door had been left open, the bookshelves were covered in dust, and most of the books were already damp, on the verge of rotting away completely.
Walking among these shelves, surrounded by silence, it was hard not to feel scare, as if a zombie could jump out at any moment.
Luckily, he could share his vision with Ye Lian and Xia Na, so he didn’t feel too nervous.
Compared to his cautiousness, Xia Na and Ye Lian were much bolder. After all, they didn’t have to worry about zombie attacks. Having become advanced zombies themselves, they naturally exerted a higher-level dominance over ordinary zombies. This was likely a zombie instinct, a natural fear of superior counterparts. Thus, no ordinary zombie would dare to attack them.
“Whoosh!”
Another gust of cold wind blew in from outside, causing Ling Mo to shiver.
Finding nothing on the first floor, the three of them regrouped and headed to the second floor.
The second floor featured a long corridor, divided into inner and outer rooms. As soon as Ling Mo stepped into the outer room, a rebar suddenly came crashing down towards his head.
Ling Mo immediately jerked backward while simultaneously extending a psychic tentacle. The rebar’s trajectory shifted, narrowly missing Ling Mo’s nose.
Such a close call sent a shiver down Ling Mo’s spine. Yet, his reactions were swift. Almost as soon as he dodged the rebar, he swung his short knife in the direction it had come from.
“Ah!”
A scream pierced the air. Ling Mo’s short knife stopped just as it pierced less than a centimeter into his attacker’s body.
With a cold expression, Ling Mo turned to look at the assailant. The man was wide-eyed, his face a mask of terror and despair, frozen in place.
The tip of the short knife had already punctured his abdomen. A slight push further, and he would be dead.
“Don’t… don’t kill me… I didn’t mean to… I thought… you were a zombie…”
The man stammered in a trembling voice.
Ling Mo’s icy gaze bore into the man’s eyes for a long moment before he slowly withdrew the short knife. Blood immediately soaked through the man’s thin clothing, but he seemed numb to the pain, his legs giving out as he collapsed.
Facing death up close, it took immense willpower not to react this way.
At that moment, several guys holding rebar rushed out from the inner room, evidently drawn by the scream.
Initially, they all looked ready for a fight, but upon seeing Ling Mo and the two girls, they were momentarily stunned.
A man and two women—hardly a threatening combination. One of them even started cursing immediately, “Yu Yang, what the hell are you screaming for… Yu Yang, what’s wrong with you?”
The man had barely finished half his sentence before his expression changed dramatically. He hurried over to support Yu Yang. Seeing the wound on Yu Yang’s abdomen, he turned his furious gaze to Ling Mo, shouting angrily, “You bastard! How dare you hurt one of our own? Are you with Long Fei’s group, here to steal our stuff? Damn it! Guys, get him!”
Ling Mo’s face darkened instantly. He had no idea who Long Fei was, but this guy was cursing and threatening to beat him without understanding the situation…
“Crack.” Ling Mo twisted his neck and took two steps forward, coldly eyeing the group of guys.
Ye Lian’s expression turned chilly, and she was about to move when Xia Na grabbed her.
With her signature smile, Xia Na whispered, “Ye Lian, let Ling-Ge handle them. Humans are much more fun than zombies.”
Ye Lian seemed not to fully understand, but after being stopped by Xia Na, she didn’t make another move.
The guys hesitated at first. The situation was odd—Ling Mo’s group, with their large backpacks, didn’t seem like they were out to rob anyone.
But seeing Ling Mo’s “come at me” stance and hearing their leader’s constant cursing, their anger flared up.
“Doesn’t matter, Yu Yang got hurt. Let’s get him!”
If Yu Yang had said something then, maybe the fight could have been avoided. Instead, he glared at Ling Mo with hatred and muttered, “He must be sent by Long Fei. Didn’t Long Fei send a bunch of people to rob us a few days ago?”
These guys were used to being aggressive. Fueled by their anger, one of them charged at Ling Mo with a rebar, aiming for his head, clearly intending to take him down with one blow.
Ling Mo’s temper flared. Against this lone attacker, he didn’t need to use his psychic power. He sidestepped the swinging rebar and plunged his short knife into the guy’s side, twisting it forcefully.
“Ah!”
A scream rang out. Ling Mo yanked the short knife out, blood spurting everywhere. The attacker staggered forward a few steps before Xia Na kicked him to the ground.
The others had just started to charge when they saw their companion fall, stopping in their tracks.
“Dammit…”
They had never encountered such a fierce opponent and were momentarily stunned.
The loudest mouth among them was also shocked. After a brief pause, he yelled, “Go get more people… Ah!”
Before he could finish, Ling Mo had already closed the distance, kicking him in the face and sending him flying.
By the time he got up, nose bleeding profusely, Ling Mo had the short knife at his throat.
“Don’t kill… don’t kill me!”
The dramatic shift was almost comical. The guy, now crying and snotting, begged for mercy while trying to back away, paralyzed by fear.
