Chapter 107 – An Unstoppable Zombie with Knife Skills
Early the next morning, in the soft white mist, several zombies were slowly approaching the Peace Theater.
Their faces were twisted, blood-red eyes wide open. Dirty clothes clung to their bodies, smeared with mud and bloodstains.
The zombies moved sluggishly, occasionally stretching their necks and sniffing hard, as if searching for something.
“Roar…”
Suddenly, a low growl came from the throat of the leading zombie. Its legs suddenly exerted force, and it charged directly at the main entrance of the Peace Theater.
The other zombies immediately followed, sprinting wildly, their figures quickly closing in on the Peace Theater.
However, just as the first zombie stepped onto the stairs, the theater’s door was violently pushed open. A swift figure darted out, a flash of cold light following its movement.
As the zombie’s head flew into the air, its body continued to lunge forward. The figure nimbly dodged and headed towards the remaining zombies.
“Thud!”
The headless zombie’s body stumbled forward a few more steps before collapsing, blood splattering all over the ground.
“Holy crap!”
Ling Mo had just stepped out the door and witnessed the headless zombie lunging at him before collapsing at his feet. He quickly jumped aside, grabbing Ye Lian behind him to dodge together.
By this time, the other zombies had all been cut down. Despite their agility and powerful arms, superior to ordinary humans in many ways, they were no match for an advanced zombie wielding a long knife and skilled in knife techniques.
Looking at Xia Na standing among the corpses, holding a long knife and smiling, Ling Mo felt a headache coming on.
Although this wasn’t the first time she had shown a split personality, this time, after regaining all her memories and fully merging with her zombie nature, it seemed Xia Na had awakened something extraordinary. Perhaps… a thrill for killing?
Fortunately, she remained docile towards him, and after all, she was only cutting down zombies…
“These zombies are all defective; there’s nothing in their brains,” Xia Na said disappointedly after using her long knife to open the hindbrains of the corpses one by one.
Ling Mo thought to himself that these zombies were just wandering around outside. They were lucky if they found prey, and even the occasional outbreak of mutual slaughter might not give them a chance to grab any meat. Even if they had the potential, they might not have the opportunity to form virus gel. Calling them “defective” right off the bat seemed a bit unfair…
“Ling-Ge, where… are we going?” Ye Lian asked hesitantly. Her voice was unique, soft but not cloying, and her clear tone always brought a pleasant feeling to his ears. However, because she hadn’t spoken for a long time and didn’t remember many words, she spoke very slowly, with a hint of uncertainty.
Ling Mo felt a warm sensation in his heart. Although he’d only taught her for a day, Ye Lian had already made great progress. As he had anticipated, advanced zombies had the ability to learn. In fact, they learned much faster than ordinary children because the knowledge was already stored in their brains, only suppressed by the virus.
“Let’s go to the A1 Teaching Building. It’s not too far from here. Although gel doesn’t have much effect on your evolution anymore, it’s still essential food,” Ling Mo said, pointing to the A1 Teaching Building marked on the map drawn by Lin Luanqiu.
Ye Lian leaned over to take a look but seemed not to remember much. She just nodded obediently, “Okay.”
“What’s this?” Xia Na, still holding her blood-dripping long knife, walked over curiously and took a look. Without waiting for an explanation, she grabbed it. “Hmm… a map?”
“Stop messing around. We need it to find our way,” Ling Mo thought. None of them knew the way, and without the map, they’d be wandering around like headless chickens.
This huge campus didn’t seem to have any signposts, which made X City University quite frustrating in that regard.
One had to admit that Lin Luanqiu was indeed skilled at drawing maps. She only sketched out the general routes, but the more secluded paths, where zombies were less likely to be encountered, were marked very clearly.
Even with the map, it still took Ling Mo and his group over two hours to cover just half the distance.
There were simply too many zombies along the way. Despite Ling Mo’s psychic power having advanced to a new level, allowing him to command a squad of up to twenty zombies, the sheer number of enemies slowed their progress significantly.
Another issue was the lack of usable tools. Along the way, they encountered mostly plants and various buildings, which rarely contained anything useful. Searching for supplies often attracted hordes of zombies, a risk Ling Mo wasn’t willing to take. In a typical urban setting, using available tools might make things easier. After all, relying on brute force to fight zombies was a losing strategy for humans.
Ling Mo thought to himself that the campus had too few usable resources, and the high population density made the disaster’s impact particularly severe. After the outbreak, only about three thousand survivors remained.
On the other hand, this also indicated a high infection rate. It’s possible that many people were injured in the initial chaos and turned into zombies while trying to escape.
Judging by this university’s situation, one could infer the state of the entire world.
If it weren’t for Ye Lian and Xia Na both having advanced, successfully becoming advanced zombies with impressive combat abilities, their progress would have been even slower.
Ye Lian’s attacks were as swift as a leopard’s. Often, she would charge into a group of zombies and take down a large number of them in an instant. Xia Na, on the other hand, had an impressive knife technique. After regaining her memory, her skills with the knife became even more refined, and her combat moves were almost unstoppable.
However, zombies don’t have infinite stamina. They simply minimize their energy consumption during normal times. In combat, their stamina consumption is actually quite high.
The reason they appear stronger than humans is mainly due to the virus’s effects, which make them unresponsive to pain and devoid of fear. As they evolve, these senses gradually return, but their zombie nature means they aren’t afraid of these sensations, which gives them a significant advantage over humans.
Additionally, their physical strength and self-healing abilities have evolved beyond those of ordinary humans, allowing them to exert more force and engage in longer battles. However, this increased output leads to a high stamina drain. Zombies don’t mind this because even if their bodies sustain permanent damage, it doesn’t stop them from attacking.
But Ling Mo couldn’t bear to let Ye Lian and Xia Na engage in such relentless combat. So, when they started showing signs of fatigue, he had his zombie squad take over for them.
If Ling Mo had no compassion, they might have reached the A1 Teaching Building by now. But sacrificing his loved ones for the sake of progress was something he could never do.
“I’m exhausted…”
Watching the twenty zombies walking slowly ahead of him, Ling Mo felt dizzy.
Although he could restore his stamina by absorbing the saliva of the two female zombies, after glancing at the tired expressions of Xia Na and Ye Lian, Ling Mo decided it was better to find a place to rest.
In these times, finding food was challenging for both humans and zombies.
Seeing that they couldn’t continue any longer, Ling Mo led the group into a nearby library. Although such places usually had many people, it was still better than other locations, and importantly, the space was large enough.
He left the twenty zombies outside for two reasons. First, they smelled terrible. Imagine someone who hadn’t bathed for over a month, covered in all sorts of filth—the stench was unbearable. Second, as long as he wasn’t controlling them to fight, merely maintaining the psychic link was manageable for Ling Mo.
