Chapter 76 – Dream? Reality? Cannon Fodder?
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
As the voice of the Treasure Land Guardian faded, a massive pillar of white light enveloped all of Demon Island.
Wen Yu suddenly felt his body being pulled by a tremendous force, soaring upward. He flew higher and higher.
He flew until the panoramic view of Demon Island appeared before his eyes.
He flew until the entire island became a tiny speck.
He flew until he lost consciousness.
…
Splash!
A large bucket of bone-chilling cold water was dumped over his head!
Normally, with Wen Yu's Physical Attribute, he wouldn't care about so-called "cold water" on Earth.
But this time, it was different!
This water was far colder than any water found on Earth!
Wen Yu jolted awake, leaping up from the ground instantly.
Before he could even process what was happening, an even colder voice reached his ears.
"Number 22956, the Cannon Fodder Battalion you lead attempted to desert during the great war. As punishment, your entire battalion was placed in solitary confinement for thirty days. I trust you have reflected deeply on your mistakes. Now, return to your barracks and fulfill your duty!"
An unfamiliar language rang out, but strangely, Wen Yu could understand exactly what was being said!
As the voice faded, a light suddenly cut through the darkness.
It was the door to the confinement cell.
Wen Yu took a deep breath and finally began to survey his surroundings.
The room was small and dim, cluttered with trash and debris. Foul-smelling sewage on the floor even covered the tops of his feet.
He carefully checked the power within his body. Fortunately, his strength was still there, and the Little Soul Beast was drifting groggily near his ear.
He sank his consciousness into his Second Soul Realm, and One-Eye's massive figure immediately appeared before him.
After checking himself over and confirming that nothing was missing from his Soul Pets or his Spatial Ring, Wen Yu took a deep breath and walked straight toward the light.
Outside the door, a tall, straight figure stood tall.
"Number 22956, follow me. I will take you back to the barracks."
Wen Yu nodded immediately, letting out a sigh of relief.
Luckily, they aren't making me find the barracks on my own. That would have been a nightmare.
Seeing that the Trial had conveniently solved that problem for him, Wen Yu took a closer look at the man in front of him.
The man was about 1.9 meters tall with bulging muscles, proving he possessed great physical power.
In terms of proportions and facial features, he looked very much like a Caucasian man from the West. The only difference was his head of shimmering silver hair.
Wen Yu's heart skipped a beat. He couldn't forget the final words spoken by the Treasure Land Guardian.
"Welcome to my world."
Your world?
A flicker of doubt crossed Wen Yu's eyes.
"Officer, excuse me, but where exactly are we? I seem to have forgotten some things," Wen Yu asked, feigning distress.
The silver-haired man paused mid-step and spoke slowly.
"Hmph, I suppose solitary confinement isn't easy to stomach."
The man spoke indifferently, but Wen Yu could still detect a hint of disdain, schadenfreude, and even a touch of shared experience in his tone.
"Let me remind you. This is Shimmer Blue Star, Silver Moon Holy City, the camp of the Third Legion. You are the commander of the 94th Cannon Fodder Battalion under the Third Legion. In last month's battle, instead of leading the charge, you tried to desert under the cover of night. You were caught by our Law Enforcement Team and thrown into confinement!"
"So, you little Level 2 and Level 3 runts actually thought that once you left the Holy City, you'd be heading toward a bright future?"
"Utterly ridiculous!"
With a hint of mockery in his voice, the silver-haired man explained the situation, but his words only left Wen Yu more confused.
"Shimmer Blue Star? Silver Moon Holy City? Third Legion?"
Wen Yu muttered the names under his breath in a voice so low it was barely audible.
"Alright, we're here. Get in."
After walking for about ten minutes, the silver-haired man stopped and stepped aside. A crude barracks appeared before Wen Yu.
"And remember this: because this is your first offense and we are currently extremely short-handed, we're giving you some special treatment. If this were ten years ago, any deserter would have been executed on the spot without mercy!"
"Next time, you won't be so lucky."
Having delivered his warning, the silver-haired man turned and left, leaving a pensive Wen Yu behind.
"This really isn't looking good!"
Wen Yu shook his head with a bitter smile. While he didn't quite understand what Shimmer Blue Star, the Silver Moon Holy City, or the Third Legion were, he certainly knew what Cannon Fodder was!
To think that after being reborn, he would end up as Cannon Fodder in a Trial!
"Forget it, no use dwelling on it. I still don't have enough intelligence to deduce what this Trial is actually about."
Wen Yu lifted his foot and stepped directly into the barracks.
As Wen Yu entered the barracks, the noisy room suddenly fell silent.
Upon seeing Wen Yu, everyone seemed to find their center again, letting out a collective sigh of relief.
As the strongest among them, Wen Yu carried that kind of influence.
William, Chu Ziling, Jiang Wentao, Sun Ruixing, and even Sun Aotian were all there in the crowded barracks.
Gathered inside were all the remaining survivors from Demon Island.
Humans are, after all, social creatures. Seeing so many of his own kind-especially several powerful ones-lifted a weight off Wen Yu's heart.
"What's the situation? Were you all released from solitary confinement as well?"
"Yeah."
At Wen Yu's question, Jiang Wentao, who was closest to him, nodded.
Wen Yu looked around and saw looks of panic on most people's faces. Only a few remained relatively calm. He couldn't help but rub his temples.
Wen Yu had never been a soldier, but he had been Cannon Fodder before.
Remaining calm and being willing to risk one's life were the only guarantees for Cannon Fodder to survive. Most of the people here would likely die during this Trial.
Wen Yu sat down next to Jiang Wentao and asked, "Have you managed to gather any intel? So far, all I know is that this place is called Shimmer Blue Star, we're in a military camp belonging to the Silver Moon Holy City's Third Legion, and we… are Cannon Fodder."
Jiang Wentao nodded and spoke up.
"I've found out a bit more than you. This isn't Earth. Everyone on this planet has silver hair."
"But the strange thing is, they don't seem the least bit suspicious of our hair or skin color."
"So, I suspect we're likely in a fictionalized, constructed space."
"Mhm."
Wen Yu gave a soft grunt of affirmation.
When it came to gathering intelligence, Jiang Wentao and his peers were the professionals.
"Also, do you know what time it is right now?"
"What?"
Wen Yu looked at Jiang Wentao, puzzled.
