Chapter 77 – The Final Fortress!
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
"Currently, it is the year 1765 of the Silver Moon Dynasty. It has been 368 years since the start of the Apocalypse, and it is the 27th year that the Silver Moon Holy City has been under siege by Demonic Creatures!"
"In this world, the Silver Moon Holy City is the only place where anything that can move still exists! Everywhere else, every living creature has been exterminated by the Demon Race, turning the world into a land of total death!"
"The people of this world call this place… the Final Fortress!"
Wen Yu's expression immediately turned solemn.
"The Demon Race?"
"Yes."
Jiang Wentao nodded with a grave expression.
Wen Yu pondered for a moment before testing the waters hesitantly.
"The apocalyptic crisis that broke out here… it's the same as Earth's, right?"
"Correct."
Jiang Wentao looked at Wen Yu with absolute certainty.
Wen Yu understood instantly. The Military knew a lot! Perhaps even more than a Cannon Fodder level Reborn like himself!
Jiang Wentao asked again, "As a Sequence, you should know what the Demon Race is, right?"
"Yes, of course I know."
"Good. It seems that this time, there's no need for us to compete with each other. The real enemy has appeared. Let me introduce myself: I am Jiang Wentao, Sequence 29, and No. 3 of the Military Super Soldier Project. Beside me are my comrades, No. 8 and No. 10."
"I'm Wen Yu, Sequence 2. Any other intel?"
Jiang Wentao hesitated for a moment but decided to share the remaining information he had.
"The war has reached its decisive stage; the fighting basically never stops. For Shimmer Blue Star, the situation is looking quite grim. I'm afraid we'll be sent out just to die!"
"Heh."
Contrary to expectations, Wen Yu actually chuckled upon hearing Jiang Wentao's words.
"If it's about being sent to die, don't worry-you have me. I might not be good at much else, but I'm an expert at being Cannon Fodder!"
Seeing the confusion in Jiang Wentao's eyes, Wen Yu gave a mysterious smile and offered no further explanation.
…
"Bang."
The flimsy door of the barracks was kicked open. A man with a head of silver hair was the first to stride into the cramped room.
"You trash!"
As the insult left his mouth, a massive wave of sound surged forth, vibrating through the room with such force that Wen Yu's entire body went numb!
This man's Physical Attribute had to be at least Level 5 or higher!
If Wen Yu felt it that strongly, the others fared even worse. The weakest among them were immediately sent to the floor by the sheer volume of the man's voice, bleeding from their facial orifices as they slumped limply, their lives hanging in the balance!
"Hmph."
With another heavy grunt-though this time he deliberately lowered his volume-the silver-haired man caused no further accidents.
"Let me introduce myself. I am Walhi, Captain of the Fifth Battalion, Third Legion of the Silver Moon Holy City. From today onward, you can consider yourselves liberated from your fate as Cannon Fodder. Now, you've become the Vanguard Battalion within my Fifth Battalion!"
"To put it bluntly, you've been promoted from low-level Cannon Fodder to high-level Cannon Fodder!"
"Now, you have thirty minutes to get out, eat, and fall into formation. Then, you will follow me back to our defensive line to contribute your strength for the sake of the Silver Moon Clan!"
"Anyone not present after thirty minutes will be dealt with via military law. Believe me, the taste of military law is far more unforgettable than thirty days in solitary confinement!"
Having said his piece, Walhi immediately walked out the door.
The barracks instantly erupted into a din of voices.
"What? Cannon Fodder? What the hell is this Trial even about?"
These were the brainless ones, those who clearly hadn't bothered to learn anything from their guides on the way to the barracks.
"No way, we're going to war? Isn't this supposed to be a competitive Treasure Land?"
This came from one of the more rigid-minded individuals, who actually believed that a Treasure Land would always be exactly what it claimed to be.
"War is fine by me! As long as I'm not facing those few freaks, I'm not afraid of anything!"
This was someone confident in their own strength.
"We're in big trouble!"
Jiang Wentao's face was currently ashen as he spoke to Wen Yu.
"The enemies faced by a Vanguard Battalion and a Cannon Fodder Battalion are two completely different concepts!"
Not far away, Sun Ruixing and Sun Aotian also walked over toward Wen Yu.
"What do we do, Wen Yu-Ge?"
Sun Aotian was clearly struggling to find a pillar of support.
"I don't know."
Wen Yu simply shook his head.
What could they do? If he had a way, he would have run long ago. What else was there to do?
"By the way, where's Zang Pengfei?"
"Fei-Ge used Teleportation to leave the Treasure Land ages ago!"
"He certainly got lucky. Come on, let's go eat first, then line up at the entrance. For now, we can only take things one step at a time."
From Walhi just now, it was clear that in this place, Level 5s were as common as dogs, Level 6s were everywhere, and Level 7s or 8s weren't even considered top-tier experts.
The gap in power left everyone feeling like puppets on strings, completely unable to resist!
At the entrance of the barracks, a large cauldron had been set up at some point.
As the commander on the surface, Wen Yu was naturally the first to receive his meal.
The so-called meal was actually a bowl of pitch-black, viscous meat soup. One strong whiff was enough to catch a strange, foul odor emanating from it.
Suppressing his nausea, Wen Yu forced it down, but then his eyes brightened.
Though the meat soup tasted terrible, the energy contained within was substantial!
Wen Yu immediately felt a wave of warmth spread through his body, and much of his physical exhaustion dissipated instantly.
Once everyone had finished the soup, Walhi reappeared before the crowd a short while later.
"Hmph. Follow me."
He gave a very pretentious and proud nod, seemingly satisfied with the mental state of Wen Yu and the others. He turned and led the group-a Cannon Fodder squad of nearly a hundred people-toward the towering walls in the distance.
Only now did Wen Yu have the chance to observe the Silver Moon Clan's so-called "Final Fortress."
Wen Yu couldn't estimate the total size of the fortress, but just by looking at the distant city walls, which looked like giant pillars holding up the sky, he could roughly calculate the scale of the entire place.
It was massive-perhaps even larger than Beijing!
However, there were very few pedestrians on the wide streets. Most of the roadside shops were abandoned, and even among those that weren't, eighty percent were shuttered!
It was possible that business was poor because they were near the military camp and close to the battlefield.
Or perhaps…
The population of the Silver Moon Clan had dwindled to the point where it could no longer support the race's economy and trade.
"Extinction!"
The word suddenly flashed through Wen Yu's mind before he ruthlessly suppressed it.
Although he didn't know the exact population of the Silver Moon Clan, the magnificence of the walls and the craftsmanship of the roadside buildings were enough to prove that they had once been a highly prosperous race.
Surely they wouldn't have been beaten this badly by the Demon Race?
That shouldn't be possible, right?
Wen Yu suddenly felt that this Trial might not be as simple as he had imagined!
