Chapter 78 – The Combat Zone
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
As Wen Yu and his group slowly approached the city wall, the magnificent structure gradually revealed its full scale.
Wen Yu couldn't estimate its height; he could only see that wisps of clouds had already formed halfway up the wall. The surface was covered in mottled scars and bloodstains, with many areas even showing different colors.
Those were the parts that had been repaired later!
"This wall has protected our people for twenty-seven years. Unfortunately, no matter how grand the architecture, it cannot withstand the aftershocks of battles between Level Ten Class Holders and the Level Ten Demon Race. We have tried to repair it many times, but it's no use. It's about to crumble! It could be today, or it could be a month from now. Who knows?"
These melancholy words came from Walhi, but they caused Wen Yu to have a sudden realization.
A typical officer would never say such things to a common soldier. Furthermore, these were things that every soldier should already know-even Wen Yu, whose current status was that of Cannon Fodder, was no exception!
Unless…
This man was the "guide" for their Trial!
"There's something wrong with Walhi, right?"
Jiang Wentao's whisper reached Wen Yu's ear, but the volume was a bit too loud-loud enough for Walhi, who was not far ahead, to hear.
However, Walhi showed no reaction.
"There's definitely something wrong," Wen Yu replied with certainty.
"Let's go. Up to the wall. I'll designate your combat zones!"
Once they reached the foot of the wall, following Walhi's guidance, everyone stood on a massive platform.
Walhi pressed several buttons on the platform. With a mechanical roar, the giant platform rose rapidly toward the top.
"I'll give you a brief introduction to the current battle situation."
"Currently, our Silver Moon Clan is facing a major problem with a shortage of manpower, and the Demon Race's offensive is becoming increasingly fierce! Therefore, you must hold your designated combat zones for three days before you can receive a brief rest."
"In the combat zones I've assigned to you, the majority are Level 1 and Level 2 Demonic Creatures, with a very small number being Level 3 Demonic Creatures. Additionally, there is an Exchange Pillar in the center of the combat zone to ensure your supplies. Remember, your equipment, food, and even drinking water must all be purchased through the Exchange Pillar. Once I send you up, there will be no so-called logistical support!"
"Understood?"
"Understood."
Scattered responses rang out. Hearing Walhi's words, everyone began discussing amongst themselves.
"Isn't this just giving away points? With the advantage of the city wall, as long as we kill some Level 1 monsters, our strength will skyrocket."
"Exactly! The high-level ones will be held off by those experts. We can just pick up the scraps behind them!"
"This Treasure Land is really giving us benefits and looking out for us!"
Listening to the laughter behind him, Wen Yu let out a disdainful cold sneer.
These people probably didn't understand what Demonic Creatures were at all. They truly thought that these so-called Demonic Creatures were just fictional monsters created by the Treasure Land specifically to give away points.
Demonic Creatures were definitely not something that could be described as "looking out for you."
"In a moment, follow me. We'll stick together as a group. Don't get separated, remember that!"
Wen Yu spoke to Sun Ruixing, Sun Aotian, and Jiang Wentao behind him.
"This stage won't be that easy to pass."
Hearing Wen Yu's serious tone, Jiang Wentao nodded silently.
"Right, Sun, call the Knight over. Hmm, bring Chu Ziling along as well."
Wen Yu thought for a moment and decided to pull the two powerhouses, William and Chu Ziling, into their group.
Having lived through the Demon Disaster in his previous life, Wen Yu understood exactly what kind of situation they were about to face!
This was going to be an incredibly difficult war, and war was no place for individual heroism!
At least, not with Wen Yu's current strength.
…
"We're here."
As the platform gradually slowed down, Wen Yu and the others came to a halt at least five hundred meters above the ground.
"This is the defense zone at the base of the wall. Since the Demonic Creatures haven't launched an attack yet, get inside quickly."
Just as Walhi finished speaking, a massive archway opened directly in the wall before them.
Inside, it was filled with rotting corpses!
"Well, do you see that?"
Walhi pointed to a mangled corpse inside that had been gnawed beyond recognition.
Only a skeleton remained, but the patches of silver hair left on the skull revealed the corpse's identity to everyone.
"This person could be considered your predecessor. He was the former Captain of the Fifth Battalion's Vanguard Battalion. Now, I officially announce that you have become the new Vanguard Battalion of the Fifth Battalion. This is your defensive sector!"
"In three days, another group will come to relieve you! Your mission is to survive for those three days!"
"Good luck!"
As soon as Walhi finished speaking, he gave everyone a deep, lingering look before turning and walking away.
With Walhi's departure, the wall sealed shut once more.
Now, aside from the entrance facing the outside five hundred meters above the ground, there was no other way out!
…
Wen Yu took a brief look at the environment inside the wall.
The interior space was over ten meters high and quite large, enough to accommodate Wen Yu and the nearly one hundred people with him. In the center stood a glowing Exchange Pillar!
Except for the opening directly ahead, they were surrounded by pitch-black walls.
"The design is quite impressive," Jiang Wentao remarked calmly from behind.
"This defensive line is meant to alleviate pressure on the top of the wall. Judging by the size of the opening, creatures that are too large won't be able to get in. It's a decent battlefield environment. Moreover, I suspect there are measures in place to prevent creatures above Level 3 from entering, which effectively turns this into a training ground for soldiers."
"However, looking at the current situation, the Silver Moon Clan's war potential has been completely depleted. I'm afraid this place has become a death trap!"
"Yeah."
Wen Yu nodded at Jiang Wentao's assessment.
For a place meant more for training than actual defense to have so many casualties, it was clear just how dire a situation the Silver Moon Clan was in!
"What will the Trial mission be? It can't just be defending this place for three days, can it?" Wen Yu asked, puzzled.
"Unlikely. If there are no creatures above Level 3, I have ways to hold out for three days. I have a feeling it won't be that simple."
It was William who spoke.
Seeing William's confident expression, Wen Yu immediately realized that William also had quite a few trump cards up his sleeve.
Given William's personality, he wasn't the type to boast without reason.
"Sun Ruixing told you about my proposal, right? What do you think?"
William looked at Wen Yu seriously as he asked.
Wen Yu replied, "That's also something I wanted to discuss with you. I believe that as long as we all work together, we can complete this Trial together. Why must we split into small teams?"
