Chapter 19 – Police Station Strategy
Volume 1: Apocalypse Beginning
"I have a way."
Wang Zhigang's words piqued Wen Yu's interest.
If there was a way to take on those Mutant Rats, even if only a tenth were killed, that would be a huge amount of Points.
After thinking it over carefully, Wen Yu glanced at Wang Zhigang's nearly crazed eyes.
"Alright, let's talk as we walk."
Wen Yu didn't want to discuss too much in front of so many people. He beckoned to Wang Zhigang, and the two of them disappeared from the crowd one after the other.
…
"My wife passed away early, leaving me with a daughter. She's eight years old this year. When the Apocalypse broke out yesterday, my daughter happened to be in my office."
Wang Zhigang seemed to fall into memories, muttering to himself.
"My daughter was adorable, my little angel."
"I thought that even if it was the end of the world, I could keep her safe. I never expected everything would be ruined by those rats."
"She's dead?"
"Yes, eaten. Right in front of me."
Wen Yu shivered hard as he looked at the increasingly calm Director Wang before him.
Wen Yu wasn't afraid of monsters, but a clearly self-destructive madman-especially when the two were supposed to be comrades-was truly terrifying.
"Tell me your plan. And let me be clear: if I think it's not reliable, I have the right to call off this cooperation at any time."
Wen Yu said directly to Wang Zhigang.
"Don't worry, it's absolutely reliable. I'm sure you can make a big profit."
Wang Zhigang's calm, emotionless expression made Wen Yu's skin crawl, but he couldn't let go of the Points from that huge group of Mutant Rats.
Wen Yu decided to hear Wang Zhigang's plan.
"There are explosives inside the Police Station. They're all homemade, confiscated from criminals in the past. I know where they're stored, and there's enough to send those Giant Rats straight to hell."
"Heh, you call that a plan?"
Wen Yu couldn't help but feel helpless-what kind of lousy plan was that?
"Let me finish. The back door of the Police Station doesn't have many Zombies. Originally, I kept it as a backup, hoping the Zombies and Mutant Rats would fight each other to exhaustion, and then I'd go in through the back to avenge my daughter. But as you saw, the Mutant Rats weren't hurt at all; instead, they've only grown stronger."
"Counting on the Zombies is clearly unrealistic. The two of us alone can't kill many. So, I'm planning to rush in through the back door and detonate the explosives, blowing up the entire Police Station. Then you can come back and clean up any survivors. Not a bad plan, right?"
Director Wang spoke in a calm tone, laying out his plan to perish together with the enemy.
The more Wen Yu listened, the more shocked he became.
"Are you sure about this?"
"Absolutely."
Looking into Director Wang's lifeless eyes, Wen Yu silently nodded.
"As expected, madmen are beyond reason."
…
Under the faint moonlight, the battle between Zombies and Mutant Rats continued. But unlike before, the Zombies that had been charging at the Mutant Rats were now being diverted midway, surging into another narrow street instead.
This was a location Wen Yu and Wang Zhigang had carefully chosen-a narrow street where only three people could stand side by side, with a dilapidated residential building next to it.
Wen Yu and Wang Zhigang had been here for several hours. From the initial overwhelming tide of Zombies to the scattered few now, the two had even rested several times in the residential building, finally managing to chew through the massive horde.
Watching his Points steadily rise, Wen Yu couldn't stop grinning.
He casually found an Exchange Pillar. "Check Points!"
"Remaining Points: 2036."
Wen Yu thought it over carefully and first exchanged for an F-Rank Steel Blade-his previous one had already dulled.
Then Wen Yu exchanged for 14 Level 1 Attribute-less Magic Crystals.
Looking at the exchange list, Wen Yu couldn't help but curl his lip at the E-Rank War Knife and protective gear. Exchanging E-Rank equipment required a Level 2 Class Holder, which Wen Yu was not yet qualified for.
Picking up the War Blade and Magic Crystals from the Stone Pillar, Wen Yu quickly began absorbing them.
Each Magic Crystal could increase his constitution by 0.5 times. Wen Yu's current attribute was 3 points, so 14 Magic Crystals perfectly raised his constitution to the Peak Level 1. With a body boasting 10 attribute points, Wen Yu felt a familiar sensation.
In his previous life, he had been stuck at this stage for a long time.
Beside him, Wang Zhigang had also finished his exchange: a brand-new Steel Blade, a worn Protective Suit, and 7 points in body attributes.
It seemed Wang Zhigang had also chosen to use Attribute-less Magic Crystals for strengthening and Promotion. Wen Yu deliberately didn't remind him.
In the upcoming battle, a body strengthened with Attribute-less Magic Crystals would be twice as strong as one with attribute Magic Crystals.
For someone whose mind was set on suicide, this was the most cost-effective way to spend Points.
Looking at the remaining 586 Points in his hand, Wen Yu first exchanged for a Primary Healing Potion. He drank it in one gulp, feeling the wounds on his hands and face heal rapidly. Then he chose two Level 1 Beast Attribute Magic Crystals.
Attribute Magic Crystals cost twice as much as Attribute-less ones, and the 200 Points per piece made Wen Yu wince.
Spending all his Points, Wen Yu picked up the newly exchanged two Level 1 Beast Attribute Magic Crystals and pressed them against the Soul Beast.
Feeding the Soul Beast with Beast Attribute Soul Crystals was a result of Wen Yu's careful consideration. Soul Strike itself leaned toward close combat, and most skills awakened by Beast Attribute were enhancements for melee abilities.
The Soul Beast smelled food, and its round body suddenly opened a huge mouth, swallowing the Soul Crystal whole. Then, Wen Yu saw the Soul Beast's body wriggle continuously. In less than ten seconds, it returned to its original shape, having fully digested the Beast Attribute Soul Crystal.
Wen Yu carefully sensed the Soul Beast's power. One Soul Crystal increased its basic attribute by 0.5 points, the same as a Class Holder.
He handed the other Soul Crystal to the Soul Beast. The Little Soul Beast jumped up and down, clearly delighted to enjoy such a treat.
Wen Yu secretly estimated his own strength. In Combat State, he possessed 13 attribute points, enough to crush all Level 1 creatures.
Seeing that Wang Zhigang had also finished organizing, the two nodded tacitly and walked together toward the gradually quieting Police Station.
…
The battle at the Police Station was nearing its end, and the outcome was self-evident.
Countless Mutant Rats were feasting at the entrance of the Police Station. From time to time, some rats evolved into Level 1 Mutant Beasts. It was clear that among this group, there were definitely more than a few above Level 1.
At the current rate of evolution, this group of Mutant Rats might be one of the strongest forces in all of Mudanjiang City.
Now, Wen Yu and Wang Zhigang's task was to pull the tiger's whiskers.
"Old Wang, are you confident in the plan?"
The closer they got to the Police Station, the more Wen Yu's heart raced.
The pressure from the rat horde was simply too much. After feasting on a massive Zombie banquet, these rats were all plump and strong, their green eyes darting everywhere. Most importantly, there were just too many of them.
"Protect me. As long as I charge into the Police Station, you run. If it explodes, come back and avenge my daughter. If it doesn't, just leave."
Wang Zhigang was truly a character. Wen Yu looked into his eyes and saw not a hint of fluctuation, as if he himself were not the one about to die.
"Let's go!"
With a loud shout, Wen Yu charged forward with Wang Zhigang.
