Chapter 3 – One-Eye
Volume 1: Apocalypse Beginning
Wen Yu stood on the top floor of the residential building, looking at the ground covered with corpses. He ignored the filthy blood and severed limbs scattered everywhere, leaning against the railing and gasping for breath.
After saying goodbye to his upstairs neighbor, Wen Yu began a frenzied cleanup of Zombies, starting with the fifth floor, then the sixth, and finally the seventh.
There were some close calls along the way, but after clearing the seventh floor, Wen Yu finally accumulated enough Points for himself.
"Check Points."
"Ding, remaining Points: 12."
The hard work was worth it. In his previous life, Wen Yu only managed to gather enough Points to become a Class Holder in the third month after the Apocalypse began.
But this time?
Just a few hours. This is his capital. Wen Yu understood well: only by becoming stronger first could he always be ahead, and only by growing ever stronger could he gain greater survival capital in the Demon Disaster that would erupt six months into the Apocalypse.
Wen Yu narrowed his eyes, looking out at the quiet city. For the first time, he realized that, for him, the Apocalypse didn't seem so terrifying anymore.
Wen Yu returned to his small Rental Room on the third floor, quickly ate some food, and quietly lay down to rest for a while.
When the fatigue gradually faded, Wen Yu picked up his weapon and headed outside.
Several corpses lay in the corridor. For newly mutated Zombies, their appearance was not much different from humans, so the entire floor was filled with a sinister and terrifying atmosphere.
Wen Yu had long since become immune to such scenes. Not to mention a few corpses-even if it were a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood, Wen Yu would charge forward, as long as his life wasn't threatened.
He casually stepped on a corpse, snapping its finger bone, then went downstairs and headed toward the outside of the Residential Area.
The building Wen Yu lived in was about a hundred meters from the entrance of the Residential Area. Normally, this distance wouldn't be considered far.
But after the Apocalypse began, the hundred meters between the gate and Wen Yu's building was anything but easy to traverse.
Countless severed limbs and blood covered this short stretch of road, with at least a dozen Zombies either feasting or wandering about.
Wen Yu silently gripped his weapon tighter, looking at the Stone Pillar at the entrance of the Residential Area, which was emitting a milky white glow. His eyes were filled with determination.
That thing was his hope, and also humanity's hope against Mutant Beasts and Demonic Creatures-the Exchange Pillar.
Wen Yu was not afraid of Zombies. Compared to Zombies, humans had one powerful weapon-wisdom.
Wen Yu tapped the corridor door with his spear, and the "clang clang" sound echoed far away. The nearest Zombies heard the noise and staggered toward Wen Yu.
Wen Yu waited for the Zombies to approach. The crisp sound of the spear naturally couldn't escape the attention of the surrounding Zombies. When they got close, Wen Yu suddenly realized that more than ten Zombies had gathered at the corridor entrance.
He thrust his spear forward. Against these slow-moving targets, Wen Yu could confidently say that as long as he wasn't surrounded, these low-level creatures were nothing but moving Points for him.
Repeated thrusts of the spear consumed much of Wen Yu's strength, but also claimed the lives of one Zombie after another.
As Wen Yu fought and retreated, he was almost at the fourth floor when the last Zombie fell before him.
"Another dozen Points." Wen Yu looked at his rapidly increasing Points and couldn't help but smile.
Stepping through the blood-soaked corridor, Wen Yu once again reached the entrance, noticing that the number of Zombies outside had decreased significantly. He grabbed his weapon and quietly rushed outside.
The remaining Zombies could no longer pose much threat to Wen Yu. Looking at the Stone Pillar ahead, getting closer and closer, Wen Yu became increasingly excited.
"Almost there, just a little more." After swiftly stabbing a Zombie to death, Wen Yu quickly estimated the distance between himself and the Stone Pillar-only about 50 meters left.
As he fought his way forward, there was only one Zombie left before he could reach the Stone Pillar.
It was a beautiful woman, someone Wen Yu often saw during his daily commute. Her simple business attire couldn't hide her charming presence. Unfortunately, she hadn't survived the initial outbreak of the Apocalypse.
Looking at the woman he used to fantasize about, now wandering aimlessly around the Stone Pillar, Wen Yu tightened his grip on his weapon.
Due to zombification, the beautiful Zombie's vision had clearly deteriorated, and she was completely unaware of Wen Yu slowly approaching from afar.
"Calm down, calm down."
Wen Yu stared at the Zombie ahead, unable to suppress his wild excitement. Soon, he would become a Class Holder-would he be the first in the world? Or the second? At least among the first few. Wen Yu couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion.
40 meters.
35 meters.
30 meters.
Getting closer and closer.
Suddenly, a terrifying low growl broke Wen Yu's daydreams about life in the Apocalypse.
Wen Yu's pupils shrank sharply. He saw his final obstacle-the Zombie-get tackled by a gray shadow. The next moment, the beautiful head flew high into the air, dark red blood splattering everywhere, and the pale eyes stared straight at Wen Yu.
Wen Yu felt a chill run from the top of his head all the way down, and he didn't dare move a single step.
Because Wen Yu saw what had killed the Zombie.
It was a dog-a dog Wen Yu knew all too well.
The residents of the Residential Area all called it One-Eye, because the dog only had one eye. The other eye had been blind since it arrived, leaving only a blurry bloody hole. Judging by the wound, it was clearly man-made.
Wen Yu's Residential Area was certainly not a high-end place. The messy environment and perfunctory security and property management led to many stray animals nearby, and One-Eye was the most memorable among them.
About a year ago, this stray dog arrived near the Residential Area. Its frightening eye wound, matted gray fur, and a limp made even the kindest girls keep their distance from this wild dog.
At that time, One-Eye was only half a meter long, fighting daily with stray cats and dogs for food. Its fierce fighting style soon made it the best-fed among the strays.
Naturally, growing up in such an environment, One-Eye had no fondness for humans.
Whenever it saw passersby, it would glare at them with its one remaining eye, making everyone who saw it feel uneasy-including Wen Yu.
Normally, Wen Yu wouldn't be afraid of an ordinary stray dog. But with the arrival of the Apocalypse, the air on Earth was tainted by Demon Qi. Animals didn't turn into Zombies, but instead became something even more terrifying-Mutant Beasts.
One-Eye was a beneficiary of this disaster, and a significant one at that.
Its body grew more than three times larger-two meters long, over a meter tall. Though its mottled gray fur was still ugly, the exposed skin was taut, and no one would underestimate the explosive power of the muscles beneath.
Its massive size brought massive strength. Just now, One-Eye's pounce had sent Wen Yu's dream girl flying at least three meters, and then its sharp teeth bit off the Zombie's head in one go.
Wen Yu knew that this stray dog, hated by all, had evolved.
A Level 1 Mutant Creature.
For Wen Yu, an ordinary person, One-Eye was now the Grim Reaper."
