Chapter 138 – Night Talk
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
Under the shroud of night in Chaihe Town, Wen Yu sat quietly on the roof of a residential building within the settlement. He gazed out at the deathly silent town and, further off, the Demon Realm Gate…
"What are you thinking about?"
A familiar voice came from behind him.
It was Sun Ruixing.
"Nothing much," Wen Yu replied without turning his head.
Sun Ruixing walked up to Wen Yu's side, set down a plastic bag, pulled out a can of beer, and thrust it into Wen Yu's hand.
Wen Yu raised an eyebrow as he watched Sun Ruixing pull out another beer for himself.
"Didn't I say I'd come out and have a drink with you? So many things happened that you might have forgotten, but I didn't!"
Sun Ruixing tilted his head back, drained the liquid from the can in one go, and shrugged at Wen Yu.
"Tsk, I really did forget!" Wen Yu sighed, shaking his head.
After returning to the Camp, first there was the issue with Zhang Wenhu, then the matter of the Battlefield Between Two World-it had all caused Wen Yu to overlook such a "small thing."
"Wait for me, I'll go buy some things."
As soon as Wen Yu finished speaking, he leaped straight off the roof.
A height of seven stories wasn't much for a Level 3 Class Holder.
A moment later, Wen Yu returned, carrying a large stash of food and alcohol.
"Come on, this should be enough for the two of us to eat and drink. One-Eye, watch the door."
"Woof, woof!"
"You never invite me when there's something good…" One-Eye grumbled dejectedly, yet he still sluggishly made his way to the rooftop stairwell.
Poor One-Eye had once again been relegated to the role of a night watchman.
"Let's drink. With One-Eye here, we don't have to worry about getting too drunk."
Wen Yu opened a bottle of liquor produced by the Stone Pillar and took a long swig.
For a while, the only sound between them was the rhythmic gulping of alcohol; neither was the first to speak.
After a long silence, Sun Ruixing looked at the towering Demon Realm Gate in the distance and spoke as if to himself.
"How many people do you think will survive this time?"
Wen Yu shook his head. "I don't know. But… probably not many."
"I think so too."
Sun Ruixing sighed and took another sip of his drink.
Having experienced the power of the Demon Race firsthand, Sun Ruixing was very pessimistic about the outcome of this Battlefield Between Two World.
"Do you think… this time, is it my fault? If I hadn't stopped Zhang Lifei from killing Bai Feifei…"
Wen Yu shook his head.
"Don't think too much about it. In the current situation, all we can do is fight. Thinking about anything else is pointless," Wen Yu offered words of comfort.
"I just can't help but think about these things. If it weren't for this shitty Apocalypse, I might still be living a perfectly ordinary life. After working a few more years, I would have been able to hold a grandson. Thinking about it now, sometimes, a dull life is the best life!"
Sun Ruixing finished with a sigh and drained the rest of his bottle.
"Yeah. A dull life is the best."
"Haha, I didn't expect you to say that, Younger Brother!"
Sun Ruixing's somber mood suddenly vanished. He threw an arm around Wen Yu's shoulder and laughed loudly.
"I think you're very well-suited for the current world. You're strong, you don't let things that have nothing to do with you weigh you down, and more importantly, you don't have many attachments!"
Hearing Sun Ruixing's words, Wen Yu quietly drank some liquor and tossed a half-eaten chicken wing far into the distance.
"I'm pretty fed up with it too, you know!" Wen Yu said to Sun Ruixing with a smile. Then, his voice suddenly grew heavy.
"Actually, nobody is 'suited' for this world-this shitty world!"
"If I could go back to my old life, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Back then, even though I didn't have a goal or a direction, at the very least, I didn't have to spend every single day thinking about how to stay alive!"
"Since the Apocalypse began, I've lost count of how many times I almost died. I only made it through by sheer force of will."
"If I could avoid fighting, I wouldn't do it. But more than that, I want to live."
"I have no choice but to fight, no choice but to battle, no choice but to grow stronger!"
"That is the reality for every Survivor right now."
"But this isn't called living. Life shouldn't just be about slaughter and getting stronger. This is merely surviving-struggling to keep breathing!"
Hearing Wen Yu's words, Sun Ruixing let out a soft sigh.
"When will these days ever end?"
"Maybe when there's nothing left that can threaten our safety, this kind of life will finally reach its end."
"As for now, don't think too much. Finish this drink. When the day after tomorrow comes, we'll give those Demon Spawn hell!"
"Alright, your Old Brother will help you crush them!"
Wen Yu drained the alcohol in his cup in one gulp.
"To our survival!"
"We'll definitely survive! I still want to live long enough to see my grandson!"
When the sky cleared, Wen Yu and Sun Ruixing ended their night-long drinking session.
Unfortunately, thanks to the powerful Physical Attribute of a Class Holder, they still hadn't managed to get drunk.
Sun Ruixing returned to his room early to rest, leaving Wen Yu sitting alone on the roof, gazing down at the scenery below.
In the distance, the Demon Realm Gate flickered with a dim, ominous Black Light. It was an unmistakable reminder to everyone that battle was about to erupt.
Wen Yu stood up and stretched lazily, shaking off the fatigue of the night.
"One-Eye."
Hearing Wen Yu's voice, One-Eye, who had been lying by the stairwell, came trotting over.
"Go find the Giant Dragon. There's only one day left until the Demon Realm Gate opens. By tomorrow, make sure all the Mutant Creatures are ready."
One-Eye nodded and immediately ran downstairs.
"Wait, whatever you do, don't be late,"
Wen Yu couldn't help but urge him once more.
"Woof, woof!"
"Understood, Boss. You can count on me."
Seeing Wen Yu nod without saying anything else, One-Eye immediately vanished into the Mountain Forest.
It wasn't that Wen Yu was being overly anxious; it was simply because the significance of the Reinforcements was far too great!
In his past life, Wen Yu knew very well what the existence of Mutant Beasts meant to humanity!
They were humanity's allies, even their protective umbrella!
Without looking too far ahead, just considering this specific instance-if they didn't have the strength of the Mutant Beasts, Wen Yu and all the Class Holders in Chaihe Town would have absolutely no chance of survival!
Seeing busy figures appearing in the Chaihe Town Settlement in the distance, Wen Yu pondered for a moment before jumping off the roof and heading toward the Settlement.
Inside the Settlement, Zhang Wenhu had woken up early and was already organizing men to establish a defensive perimeter.
Although Zhang Wenhu and Wen Yu disagreed on whether to abandon the Settlement, that didn't mean Zhang Wenhu underestimated the danger brought by the Demon Realm Gate!
Caution was the only guarantee of survival!
From the obstacles and defensive measures Zhang Wenhu had set up, it was clear how much importance he placed on this Battlefield Between Two World!
All sorts of debris were piled firmly in front of the Demon Realm Gate. Within a fifty-meter radius of the gate, various traps and gasoline bombs were laid out.
These were the first appetizers meant to welcome the creatures of the Demon Race!
Defensive measures were scattered throughout the Camp. Zhang Wenhu had turned this small Settlement into a fortress.
Or perhaps, a seal!
A seal specifically targeting the Demon Realm Gate.
Unfortunately, in Wen Yu's eyes, these little tricks were riddled with flaws.
Amidst the busy crowd, Wen Yu found Zhang Wenhu.
"Younger Brother Wen Yu."
Seeing Wen Yu, Zhang Wenhu greeted him with a smile. He then spoke a few words to Li Shanlin, who was beside him, before walking over to Wen Yu.
"What brings Younger Brother Wen Yu here at this hour?"
