Chapter 53 – News of the Cannibals

Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds

Following the same path they took to get in, the two of them climbed out of the cellar one after the other.

Wen Yu opened his Second Soul Realm and summoned One-Eye.

"Sniff around again. Those people have already left."

There was no sign of the Survivors in the cellar, which baffled Wen Yu. According to his deductions, the most likely explanation was that something was wrong with One-Eye's nose.

Hearing Wen Yu's command, One-Eye sniffed the ground intently, trying to distinguish the scents. Then, he barked loudly toward the entrance of the cellar.

Wen Yu pinched his chin, his brow furrowed in thought. After a moment, he spoke directly to Sun Aotian.

"Let's go. One-Eye says the last place they left a scent was right here. Some situation I haven't encountered before might have occurred. The trail has gone cold!"

"Then what do we do?"

Sun Aotian's mind was still in a daze.

Wen Yu glanced at Sun Aotian and gave his head a firm pat.

"What else can we do? Go back to the Camp. There's nothing left for us here! But as long as these people are still in Chaihe Town, we'll run into them eventually."

Wen Yu hesitated for a moment before adding one more thing.

"Go back and get some rest. Don't overthink it. This is the Apocalypse; you're going to encounter many things you find unacceptable. You need to adjust your own mindset!"

Without waiting for Sun Aotian to respond, Wen Yu started walking back toward the Camp.

Sun Aotian followed closely behind Wen Yu, looking lost and dejected.

Inside the new Camp, a scene of bustling activity unfolded. Everyone was either clearing away debris or reinforcing the Camp's defenses.

Whether they were Class Holders or Ordinary People, their faces were filled with excitement and joy.

This would be their future home, the source of all their hope for survival!

Zang Pengfei stood at the highest point of the Settlement-the roof of a Residential Building-quietly watching the scene below. The cherry of the cigarette in his hand glowed and faded.

"By the way, how is Sun Ruixing doing?"

Zang Pengfei asked Wen, who was standing beside him.

"He's been unconscious since he got back. He has quite a few wounds, but none of them are fatal. I've already had someone give him a Primary Healing Potion. He should be waking up soon!"

"I see."

Zang Pengfei hesitated slightly, his expression turning serious. "Looking at the state of Sun Ruixing's injuries, they were definitely inflicted by humans. It's possible the situation in Chaihe Town is about to change."

Zang Pengfei sighed, clearly worried about the situation regarding the other Settlement.

The two stood on the roof in silence.

Eventually, three figures were seen running quickly toward them from the distance.

"Fei-Ge, Tian and Wen Yu are back!"

Wen pointed at the distant figures and gave Zang Pengfei a light nudge.

"Oh? Right."

Zang Pengfei seemed to be lost in thought, his reaction a beat slow.

It wasn't until Wen's reminder that Zang Pengfei snapped back to reality.

"Let's go. We'll head down and see how things went."

Inside a small restaurant in the Camp, Wen Yu was devouring food in large gulps while Sun Aotian sat nearby, vividly describing what they had discovered during their investigation.

"How can such beasts exist in this world? Those were human beings, and they just… they just boiled them!"

Sun Aotian's voice grew louder, his anger becoming more intense with every word.

Zang Pengfei frowned slightly and waved his hand to cut Sun Aotian off. He turned to Wen Yu and spoke.

"Brother Wen Yu, Brother Ruixing returned today covered in wounds. They were human-inflicted. He's still unconscious right now, but I suspect it might be the work of these cannibalistic Survivors. I wonder what your thoughts are on this?"

Wen Yu set down his bowl and chopsticks, calmly sizing up Zang Pengfei. His steady gaze made Zang Pengfei feel increasingly uneasy.

Zang Pengfei's intention was clear: he wanted to dump all this messy business onto Wen Yu.

Fortunately, Wen Yu was quite curious about the situation. Even now, he hadn't figured out how those people had managed to walk out of that cellar.

"Take me to see Sun Ruixing."

"Of course! I reckon Brother Sun's injuries are mostly healed by now. Come, come, I'll lead the way!"

Zang Pengfei stood up immediately, a broad smile on his face, and led Wen Yu toward one of the residences.

Inside the room, Sun Ruixing was already conscious. His physical injuries had largely recovered, and he was currently gulping down a bowl of Mutant Beast broth.

"What happened?"

Seeing that Sun Ruixing's injuries were no longer an issue, Wen Yu got straight to the point.

When Sun Ruixing saw Wen Yu, a flash of pain crossed his eyes. He began to recount the events of the past two days.

"After I separated from you and entered the town, I was unexpectedly ambushed by a group of people. They knocked me unconscious, tied me up, and took me to their base."

"Once I was inside, I realized those people… they aren't even human anymore!"

"They actually take pleasure in eating people."

"There were many people there, kept like Meat Pigs in pens."

"If I hadn't been a Class Holder and a bit older-according to them, my meat was too old and tough-I probably would have been eaten long ago."

Sun Ruixing fell into a sudden silence after saying this, as if he couldn't bear to recall the scenes he had witnessed.

"And then?" Wen Yu asked, raising an eyebrow.

"It was Li Quan'an. Li Quan'an let me out," Sun Ruixing said hesitantly. He didn't reveal to Wen Yu the fact that Li Quan'an had already become one of the Cannibals!

Fortunately, Wen Yu had no intention of prying. He simply said, "When will your injuries be fully healed? Once you're ready, take me there to see for myself."

Sun Ruixing finished the last of the broth in one gulp, threw back the covers, and stood up.

"Now. Right now. If we go quickly, we might be able to save a few more people. And this time, Brother Wen Yu, I hope you'll kill them all!"

"Those scumbags don't deserve to live!"

Sun Ruixing's eyes were filled with an uncontrollable rage.

"Count me in! I'm going to meet these man-eating bastards too!"

The voice belonged to Sun Aotian. This Kid's sense of morality gave him a deep-seated loathing for Cannibals.

"Fine. Let's go. Lead the way."

As Sun Aotian walked out of the room, Wen Yu followed closely behind.

In his previous life, Wen Yu had heard scattered reports about Cannibals. After all, such things weren't rare in the food-scarce world of the Apocalypse.

However, all information regarding Cannibals seemed to have been suppressed and locked down by the High Command. They had only issued one standing order:

Any Class Holder who encounters Cannibals must execute them without mercy!

Wen Yu had no idea what the reason behind that order was.

This had resulted in traces of Cannibals being extremely rare.

He hadn't expected that so soon after his Rebirth, he would encounter such an interesting development.
