Chapter 125 – Simple and Brutal
Volume 3: Rising Winds and Clouds
"The Ghost-Faced Qilin was the first Divine Beast Species we contacted, but the result wasn't good, so we never went looking for the others. Every one of them rules its own territory like a king, and they follow the law of the jungle in its rawest form. If you want to communicate with them, you have to fight first and talk afterward… If only every Divine Beast Species were like the Vermilion Bird and Xing."
As Kuangliu finished, he reached out and stroked Xing atop Wen Yu's head, earning an immediate display of bared teeth.
Kuangliu awkwardly withdrew his hand and muttered, "I misspoke. If only they were all like the Vermilion Bird… Xing excluded."
Wen Yu gave him a strange look.
"How did your Vermilion Bird come to be with you?"
Kuangliu's hands jerked on the steering wheel. His voice rose several notches.
"Don't even think about targeting the Vermilion Bird! That's one of our Military's top combat forces-even more important than I am!"
Wen Yu shrugged.
"I'm only asking. So how did the Vermilion Bird end up with you? From what you just said, it doesn't sound as though you subdued it."
"I don't know how we got the Vermilion Bird either… When the Yanjing Settlement was first being built, my father left for a while. When he came back, he had a Vermilion Bird with him… He wouldn't explain when I asked."
"Mm."
Wen Yu nodded and narrowed his eyes, his thoughts unknown.
Kuangliu immediately shoved him and shouted, "Hey! Hey! Get rid of that expression! I know exactly what you're thinking. Put those filthy ideas away right now."
"I understand. I won't target the Vermilion Bird."
"Bullshit. Your expression says the exact opposite. No, I need to notify Commander Lin and tell him to hide the Vermilion Bird."
"There's no need. I honestly have no designs on it…"
"Really?"
"…"
"Hey, why aren't you answering? Could you give me a clear response?"
Amid Wen Yu and Kuangliu's idle banter, Demon City appeared in the distance.
…
Demon City still stood where Wen Yu had last seen it, though everything inside had changed.
Vast numbers of low-level Bipedal Lizards crawled in and out of the city. Their densely packed bodies were enough to make anyone dizzy.
Unfortunately, their levels were far too low.
With the Demon Qi Shield Generator shut down and no longer able to keep enemies out, the Military's drones had already flown into Demon City and surveyed every corner.
The once-enormous black vortex had shrunk to less than ten meters in height. Bipedal Lizard hatchlings barely above Level 1 continued crawling from it. Without anyone to command them, the creatures showed remarkably little intelligence and had packed Demon City to overflowing.
More importantly, the low-level Bipedal Lizards completely blocked the two remaining ordinary Demon Realm Gates. No matter what kind of Demonic Creature emerged, the Bipedal Lizards killed and devoured it, then reproduced Bipedal Lizards that had not even reached Level 1.
Wen Yu frowned at the images on the tablet computer for a long time before speaking.
"No movement from the red Demon Realm Gate?"
Kuangliu shook his head.
"None. It's been very quiet lately."
Then Kuangliu waved a hand and raised his voice.
"Our mission is to recover the Demon Qi Shield Generator. As for the Bipedal Lizards inside, consider them an additional reward. Kill as many as you can."
Everyone's eyes lit up.
The Demonic Creatures inside Demon City might be low-level, but they were numerous and densely concentrated. Altogether, they still represented a considerable number of Points.
"Move out!"
…
The instant Kuangliu gave the order, One-Eye and Xing became two blurred shadows and raced toward Demon City.
Their bodies expanded as they ran. By the time they reached the walls, they had transformed into enormous beasts as tall as the fortifications themselves.
One flew and the other leaped, carrying them swiftly over the wall. Flames immediately soared into the sky inside Demon City, accompanied by an endless chorus of the Bipedal Lizards' gurgling screams.
The others curled their lips at the sight. Yang Pengguang drew his longsword, and his entire body abruptly transformed into a cold streak of sword light that shot straight toward Demon City.
"Oh my God! Flying on a sword? A Sword Immortal?"
Andrei's eyes nearly bulged from their sockets. Even Claire's eyes shone brightly.
Although they had entered the Outpost at the same time, they had been deployed to different fronts. Neither of them knew what Skills Yang Pengguang possessed.
Even Wen Yu watched the flying Yang Pengguang with naked envy.
Purely in terms of appearance, the move was stylish beyond compare.
"Sword Immortal, my ass…"
Kuangliu muttered under his breath, then quickly changed the subject.
"Why are you still standing here? They'll take all the Points if you wait any longer!"
With that, Kuangliu broke into a run toward Demon City.
The others followed behind him, each employing their own methods as they charged into the city.
…
Wen Yu remained outside Demon City, watching the towering flames within as he strolled slowly toward the entrance.
One-Eye and Xing had gone ahead, so Wen Yu was in no hurry.
His leisurely pace was not truly slow. It did not take long for him to reach the edge of Demon City.
Wen Yu gently ran a hand over the city wall. Emotion flashed through his eyes.
The victory at the Outpost had not only raised the strength of humanity's Class Holders dramatically; more importantly, it had given the Military conviction.
Demonic Creatures were not invincible.
Perhaps instilling that conviction was the true purpose behind opening the Outpost Treasure Land.
Dense gurgling noises continued in the distance, punctuated by occasional explosions.
After a brief moment of thought, Wen Yu leaped onto the wall and moved quickly toward the center of Demon City.
…
By the time Wen Yu reached the Demon Qi Shield Generator, someone was already standing beside the Demon Qi Matrix.
"That fast?"
Confusion flashed through Wen Yu's eyes when he saw Yang Pengguang. Then he smiled in greeting.
Yang Pengguang turned at Wen Yu's voice. A faint, ambiguous smile hung on his face as he nodded.
A blurred Black Light rapidly dissipated from his hand, but Wen Yu noticed nothing.
"Why aren't you harvesting Points?"
Yang Pengguang smiled at the question.
"Ensuring that the mission objective remains secure is the duty of every Huaxia soldier."
