Chapter 49 – I Want You to Kill Many, Many People!
Volume 3
With the terms of cooperation between Wen Yu and the Military settled, both sides were very satisfied with the outcome.
Lin Haifeng personally brewed Wen Yu a cup of tea. Then the two of them sat there staring at each other, neither saying a word for a long while.
Unfortunately, when it came to patience, Wen Yu was no match for this Old Fox. After finishing a cup of hot tea, Wen Yu was the first to speak.
"So, I'd like to know what intelligence the Military has on any large-scale Zombie or Mutant Beast activity."
Lin Haifeng remained perfectly calm. He took a light sip of tea before finally saying, "There are a few places that need a powerhouse like you. But there's no rush. Why don't you have some tea first?"
Wen Yu nodded, but inwardly, he had already started grumbling.
You might not be in a rush, but I am.
Counting from the time Wen Yu entered Mudanjiang City, nearly a week had already passed without any major progress in his strength. For the past few days, he could excuse his slacking by saying he was dealing with Sun Xuewei's matter and going home for a visit. But now, even Wen Yu could no longer stay calm!
Evolution was like rowing against the current. If you did not grow stronger, others still would. Little by little, the gap in strength would widen.
And the reason Wen Yu could sit in front of the highest leader of the Huaxia Military, drinking tea the man had personally brewed for him, certainly was not because Wen Yu was handsome.
After another long while, Lin Haifeng finally finished his cup of hot tea. Only then did he slowly speak.
"Wen Yu, it's all right if I call you that, isn't it?"
Wen Yu nodded, indicating that he had no problem with it.
"What do you think of the current Yanjing Settlement?"
Wen Yu shrugged.
"It's not bad."
"Yes. Not bad."
Lin Haifeng stood up from behind his desk and slowly walked to the window. Looking down at the many busy soldiers below, he said in a low voice, "Unfortunately, behind all that prosperity, there is always filth."
Hearing Lin Haifeng say that, the first thing Wen Yu thought of was the matter between the Military and the descendants of those Aristocratic Families.
"In truth, in my eyes, things like democracy, freedom, and equality have never truly existed. The strong occupying more resources is entirely reasonable, entirely logical, and entirely in line with the rules of evolution!"
"What do you think?"
Hearing Lin Haifeng's words, Wen Yu nodded.
"Come. Look outside."
Lin Haifeng waved Wen Yu over, signaling for him to come to his side. Then he said to Wen Yu, "What can you see down there?"
Below, people were coming and going at the gates of the Military Region Headquarters. Everywhere were Class Holder personnel in military uniforms, along with a small number of military vehicles driving back and forth.
Wen Yu pondered for a moment before slowly saying, "I can see that the Military is very powerful."
This was not flattery. In terms of strength, Wen Yu was absolutely certain that the current Huaxia Military was the strongest human organization in the world-or at the very least, one of the strongest.
Hearing Wen Yu's answer, Lin Haifeng shook his head.
"What I see is a land full of wailing…"
Lin Haifeng let out a heavy sigh, then shook his head and slowly said, "You know about the Demon Disaster half a year from now, don't you?"
Wen Yu nodded.
"Then how much do you know about the scale of the Demon Disaster, and how terrifying it will be?"
Wen Yu shook his head.
Although he had experience from his previous life, that was merely the experience of one small Mudanjiang City. It was only a fragment of the whole picture.
"The Demon Disaster. The Ruler. Heh…"
Lin Haifeng turned and walked back to his desk. He drained the tea in his cup in one gulp, then slowly said, "According to the intelligence the Military has gathered, the Demon Disaster has already destroyed more than a hundred worlds. We're not sure whether we are stronger than those worlds that have already been destroyed. Nor are we certain that our strength and our abilities will ensure we can hold out longer than they did!"
"Under these circumstances, all I can guarantee is that we can gather the greatest force possible to stand against this disaster."
"Unfortunately, there are always people who don't understand what I'm trying to do. They're still lost in the benefits their power brings them."
At this point, Lin Haifeng let out a heavy sigh.
…
"Actually, those Aristocratic Families haven't done anything wrong. They live under the shade left by their ancestors, so it's only natural that they enjoy certain privileges."
"Take you and me, for example. Are your parents still alive?"
Wen Yu shook his head.
"My father is still alive. He's over seventy this year. The benefits brought by the Class system were immediate. After the Old Man Changed Class, his body has remained fairly strong. He lives in the Central District, and not long ago, he even married a widow in her forties."
There was no particular hidden meaning behind Lin Haifeng's words.
"It's the same in this world. Some elderly people and children, even after the Apocalypse, can still enjoy the best education, the best living environment, the best of everything. But some elderly people and children can only do hard labor in the Outer City and drink thin porridge."
"That is what we call inherited shelter. Those laborers themselves have done nothing wrong. They're weak, so they can't kill Zombie or Mutant Beast. That isn't their fault. Their fault lies in not giving birth to a capable son, or not having good parents!"
"You can't blame anyone else for that, can you?"
After hearing Lin Haifeng's words, Wen Yu fell silent for a long while before finally nodding.
There really was nothing wrong with that statement. It was like before the Apocalypse, when many children complained about why they hadn't been born into rich families.
Who were they supposed to blame?
…
"But the current situation is different."
Lin Haifeng continued.
"Do you know? According to theories from before the Apocalypse, absolute monarchy is actually the form of rule that can best unleash the war potential of the Country!"
"Because under that system, as long as there is a farsighted and capable commander, the entire Country will operate like a huge, precise machine and unleash tremendous power!"
Hearing this, Wen Yu said quietly, "Power can only be used to its greatest effect when concentrated in the hands of a few…"
"Exactly!"
Hearing Wen Yu's words, Lin Haifeng immediately clapped twice and nodded in agreement.
"I wasn't the one who said that."
"But that is the truth! Can you imagine a Military with two different voices? There would be no need to fight a war. The entire Military would collapse, and the reason might be nothing more than a private grudge between two commanders…"
"The Aristocratic Families are now placing their own people into the Military on a large scale. The ridiculous part is that I, the Commander-in-Chief, can only mobilize a small portion of our forces. That is a disease!"
"Their existence itself isn't wrong, but their hands have reached too far!"
…
After a long silence, Lin Haifeng spoke.
"Can I trust you?"
Wen Yu shook his head instead.
"That depends on you, not me."
"Mm."
Lin Haifeng took out a cigarette, handed it to Wen Yu, then took a deep drag of his own.
"You owe the Military one mission. Now I'm giving you that mission."
…
"This time, I need you to kill people. A great many people."
Wen Yu nodded without the slightest hesitation.
Killing people was something Wen Yu had done before. Whether there were many or few was just a number. Getting hung up on that was completely meaningless!
"In a few days, it will be Old Master Fang's birthday celebration. You will go attend the banquet, and then I need you to kill everyone there. Remember, everyone!"
Hearing this, Wen Yu nodded, then asked, "How am I supposed to get to Old Master Fang's birthday banquet?"
Lin Haifeng gave Wen Yu a strange smile.
