Chapter 97 – A Sudden Turn

Wen Yu noticed the moment the Bipedal Lizard pyramid began to move.

He saw the rolling cloud of dust in the distance and felt its earthshaking momentum. Without another word, he turned and fled.

"What is that thing…?"

Xing and One-Eye howled in alarm while the Little Soul Beast trembled uneasily. Xing beat his wings even harder, becoming a black arrow fleeing into the distance.

"Our nightmare…" Wen Yu said hoarsely.

Unless something unexpected happened, the entire situation at the Outpost was about to change beyond recognition.

"The real war has begun. Prepare yourselves."

Xing and One-Eye both shivered at his words.

Against Bipedal Lizards of this number and quality, Wen Yu could not turn the tide by himself.

Wen Yu reached the blockade just as the first missile barrage struck its target. His communicator rang amid the smoke-choked sky and the roar rolling across the entire Treasure Land.

Kuangliu's voice came through.

"Wen Yu! Wen Yu! Rescue the soldiers at the front immediately, then establish a defensive perimeter at the designated position."

Those designated positions were part of the Military's contingency plan for the Bipedal Lizards' tunneling assault.

With Sequence 2 and Sequence 3 at their respective centers, the Military would gather its forces from across the front and establish two Strongholds between Demon City and the Outpost.

If the situation turned hopeless, each Stronghold could act on its own. That included running for their lives-though by then, escape would inevitably be extremely difficult.

If the Military regained control of the battle, the two Strongholds would become a new blockade. In that event, the Warriors left at the front would become a nightmare for any defeated Bipedal Lizards attempting to flee.

Unfortunately, judging by the current situation…

"Can the Military deal with that big thing?" Wen Yu asked.

Kuangliu was silent for a long moment before answering slowly.

"It'll be hard. The next strike will probably make a mushroom cloud. No idea what yield they'll use, so keep your distance from that monster!"

"I know that without you telling me…"

Staying far away from the Bipedal Lizard pyramid hardly needed to be said.

"I'll contact you if anything changes. Watch yourself."

"Mm."

Wen Yu ended the call with a brief acknowledgment and looked down.

Countless Level 4 Bipedal Lizards were clawing their way out of the ground below, attacking the squads that had been hunting Demonic Creatures at the front.

"Save them."

Wen Yu did not hesitate.

At his command, Xing plunged toward the ground. Wen Yu hurled One-Eye down from midair at the same time.

One-Eye's wrinkled face twisted as his body rapidly expanded. The moment he landed, he tore the surrounding Level 4 Bipedal Lizards to pieces.

Poor One-Eye had lost count of how many times Wen Yu had dropped him from the sky to put out another fire.

Amid the spreading stench of blood and the raging intent to kill, the first large-scale war between the Human Race and the Demon Race formally began.

Wen Yu had leaped from Xing's back before the dragon even landed.

He entered his Combat State in midair and tore apart two tongues lashing toward him. Throb and Wild Song appeared in his hands, and he opened fire on the battlefield below.

Wen Yu's current Physical Attribute stood at 500 Points. The Little Soul Beast's was 465. The instant he entered his Combat State, Wen Yu's Physical Attribute surged to 965 Points.

Even a Bipedal Lizard at the Peak Level 4 possessed only 500 Points of Physical Attribute, to say nothing of the fact that these creatures had no combat Skills whatsoever.

At their current power, Throb and Wild Song could kill the giant Level 4 reptiles in a single hit.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Wild Song barked in measured bursts while Throb swept the battlefield like a submachine gun. At once, every Bipedal Lizard in the area sensed the tremendous threat.

Most of them surged frantically toward Wen Yu, indirectly relieving the pressure on the trapped squad.

He gave the croaking creatures a contemptuous snort.

"Xing! Fire!"

A fierce pillar of flame swept across the battlefield.

It passed through Wen Yu's body, already in Phasing, and annihilated the Bipedal Lizards in front of him. With that single attack, the battlefield was swept nearly clean.

Xing's Dragon Flame was extraordinarily powerful. It completely destroyed the energy contained in the Bipedal Lizards' flesh, but now was not the time to care about such details.

In moments, the dozens of Level 4 Bipedal Lizards surrounding the squad had been eliminated. Only a few corpses remained.

"Clear the field. Quickly. Then follow me."

"Yes, sir!"

The few wounded soldiers saluted Wen Yu and immediately began collecting the Magic Crystals.

Less than a minute later, One-Eye and Xing had swallowed the handful of remaining corpses, while the Military personnel had gathered every Magic Crystal scattered across the ground.

Wen Yu accepted the dozens of Level 4 Magic Crystals offered by the captain and swept them into his Spatial Ring. Then he led the squad toward the predetermined rendezvous point.

More Bipedal Lizards sprang from the earth along the way. Wen Yu shot them down in precise bursts, or One-Eye and Xing tore them apart.

Soldiers trapped nearby saw the blaze in the distance and felt waves of energy erupting across the battlefield. As if they had finally found their unit again, they began converging on Wen Yu's position.

The immense bodies of Xing and One-Eye stood like banners, drawing the eyes of every Warrior on the Eastern Front who had failed to withdraw in time.

By the time Wen Yu reached the designated Stronghold, more than two hundred people had gathered behind him.

An even larger number of Military Warriors were already assembled inside.

As Wen Yu arrived with the main group, Xiao Xue, who had been holding the Stronghold, immediately came out to meet him.

"What's the situation?" Wen Yu asked.

"Most of the personnel on the Eastern Front who didn't withdraw in time are here. No. 2 is here as well. Everyone else has already fallen back to the Outpost."

Wen Yu nodded.

"Stay here and hold this position. I'll-"

BOOM!

Before he could finish, a blaze of light erupted in the distance.
