Chapter 131 – Fire Scene
Ling Mo and his group cautiously trailed behind the massive horde of zombies, quickly approaching the direction from which the gunshots were coming.
The gunfire, along with the occasional explosions, continuously drew zombies out of the buildings along the road, adding to the horde.
Such an astonishing scene was a first for Ling Mo; this kind of situation was likely rare even in the entirety of X City.
As the zombies desperately advanced, they sustained damage from various obstacles.
Some were knocked over, some got stuck in crevices, and some even jumped from buildings, dying upon impact… For zombies, no obstacle could stop their instinct-driven urges. Loud noises had an incredibly strong attraction for them.
All the zombies surged forward relentlessly, and considering the numerous obstacles on the road, it was a miracle that a massive stampede hadn’t occurred.
This was partly due to the agility of the zombies. Even if a zombie was knocked down, it wouldn’t cause much chaos.
For the ordinary zombies that knew nothing but to move forward, as long as they had a breath of life left in them, they would keep moving towards their prey. If a fellow zombie fell in front of them, they would unhesitatingly trample over it.
Ling Mo, with his sharp eyes, spotted several Mutation Zombies within the horde. Compared to ordinary zombies, they appeared more ferocious. They leaped onto car roofs, using their superior jumping ability to sprint forward along the abandoned vehicles on the road.
When encountering zombies blocking their path, they would ruthlessly kill them. The fallen bodies would then attract a part of the horde to frantically fight over them.
However, the continuous commotion ahead kept drawing these zombies back, even causing them to abandon their immediate prey and continue moving forward.
Ling Mo roughly estimated that among these countless zombies, there were at least dozens of Mutation Zombies, not to mention numerous semi-transformed zombies.
He wondered if there might be any Advanced Zombies among them… But Advanced Zombies weren’t common; it’s unlikely that one would appear on this street.
However, if the situation continued to escalate, it was inevitable that more zombies from farther away would be drawn in, and the scene would become completely chaotic.
Ling Mo thought to himself that even a fully armed Rescue Team probably wouldn’t do something this reckless.
If they dared to fire in a busy area, they must have anticipated the current outcome. Maybe they really did have the capability to handle these thousands of zombies.
It seemed that besides the potential benefits from the Survivors, the Virus Gel from these Mutation Zombies could also be a hidden windfall… However, he wasn’t going to take any risks at the moment. It was far safer to follow behind and pick up the scraps.
Even if ordinary people managed to kill a Mutation Zombie, they wouldn’t go as far as to dig into their brains. Ling Mo figured that most ordinary people probably didn’t even know that Virus Gel was hidden in the hindbrains of Mutation Zombies.
When these Survivors and zombies started fighting, Ling Mo could then collect the bodies, which would be much easier than doing it himself.
“Boom!”
Another muffled explosion sounded, and Ling Mo couldn’t help but show a trace of doubt on his face. “This noise doesn’t seem right. It shouldn’t be a bomb, but it sounds like something was deliberately detonated…”
With the situation ahead unclear and his view blocked by numerous zombies, Ling Mo pondered for a moment before turning to Li Yalin. “Senior Sister, you go ahead and check out what’s going on.”
Ye Lian and Xia Na had ample combat abilities, so naturally, they needed to stay by his side. As an Advanced Zombie, Li Yalin wouldn’t be attacked by other zombies. Given her relatively lower combat effectiveness at the moment, she wouldn’t be much help staying with Ling Mo. Therefore, it made the most sense to send her to blend into the zombie horde and scout the situation.
However, upon hearing Ling Mo’s order, a flash of viciousness crossed Li Yalin’s eyes.
“You…” Li Yalin had just established a Psychic Link with Ling Mo, and she still harbored some resistance to his commands.
But the stabbing pain in her head suppressed her rebelliousness. She glared at Ling Mo angrily, let out a muffled grunt, and swiftly disappeared into the horde of zombies ahead.
“Seems like she’s still a bit disobedient…”
Ling Mo rubbed his chin, a strange look in his eyes.
Seeing that Li Yalin had already charged into the zombie horde, Ling Mo switched his view to her perspective.
Observing the zombies up close through her eyes, Ling Mo felt as though he was personally navigating through the massive horde.
Although Li Yalin hadn’t fully healed, with her abilities as an Advanced Zombie, weaving through the horde was still quite easy for her.
With her high reaction speed and agility, she could even avoid contact with most other zombies.
Ling Mo felt a constant stream of shadowy figures rushing past, and even his Psychic Power found it a bit overwhelming.
“That speed… No wonder she managed to ambush me back then…” Ling Mo couldn’t help but marvel. Advanced Zombies were indeed extraordinary, especially one as highly evolved as Li Yalin.
In fact, there was another reason why Ling Mo had chosen to control Li Yalin.
Her level of evolution was clearly higher than that of Ye Lian and Xia Na, possibly on the verge of advancing to the next tier.
What worried Ling Mo the most was that he had no idea how Advanced Zombies further evolved, nor what they would turn into after another transformation.
By observing Li Yalin, he hoped to find some clues… As he switched to her perspective and watched her swiftly maneuver, Ling Mo and his group slowly followed behind.
As long as they kept within a kilometer of each other, there shouldn’t be any issues… Meanwhile, nearly a kilometer away at the street corner, the cold wind whipped through the air as flames soared high, turning the intersection into a sea of fire.
Several abandoned cars had been detonated, and iron fragments occasionally flew out with a “boom” during the burning process.
On the second floor of a three-story building at the street corner, a man stood by a window, holding a rifle and aiming at the zombies crossing the fire line below.
His appearance was distinctive, with a pronounced nose, a broad forehead, sharp eyes, and tightly pressed lips, giving him a very serious demeanor.
Between shots, he occasionally glanced into the distance, his brows furrowing.
There were too many… The number of zombies was simply terrifying… “Bang!”
As he pulled the trigger again, a zombie immediately fell on the fire line, its body igniting instantly.
“Zhang Ning, are you ready over there?”
The man kept his eyes fixed ahead, not even turning his head as he asked.
A woman emerged from behind him. She appeared to be around twenty-seven or twenty-eight, with short hair that gave her a capable look. She was also holding a handgun.
“Yes, it’s all set. The gasoline was taken from the cars.”
Hearing Zhang Ning’s words, the man immediately smirked. “Today, we’ll take out all the zombies on this street.”
Zhang Ning showed a trace of hesitation and said, “We can only handle a portion of them. It’s impossible to get rid of them all. We’ve failed several times before. Luo Heng, don’t be too impulsive.”
“It’s fine. As long as we can clear them out temporarily, that’s enough. If we don’t do this, we won’t be able to gather supplies here because we can’t get onto the street.” Luo Heng still didn’t turn around as he spoke in a low voice. “We must succeed this time. My ammunition supply is running low. Staying here any longer is just waiting to die. Once we’ve gathered enough supplies, we’ll keep moving forward!”
“Sigh… alright then…” Zhang Ning sighed and nodded. “But this fire scene won’t hold them off for long.”
A cold glint flashed in Luo Heng’s eyes as he said, “The fire scene is just a temporary barrier to hold back the first wave of zombies. When the larger horde arrives, it will lose its effectiveness. Once they rush into the mall on the first floor, that’s when these monsters will meet their end.”
Though Zhang Ning still wore a serious expression, seeing Luo Heng so confident, she didn’t say anything more. Instead, she raised her gun and aimed at the zombies below.
She steadied her aim for a while before resolutely pulling the trigger.
“Bang!”
Another zombie was shot down the moment it rushed into the fire scene. Even as it fell, it wasn’t quite dead, struggling to get back up and continue toward the mall.
Ordinary zombies don’t feel pain, but this one only managed to stagger five or six meters before being taken down by fragments from a secondary explosion.
The first floor of the building was a large mall, its doors wide open. However, due to the barrier of flames, even though zombies kept charging towards the fire scene, they couldn’t get through as long as their numbers hadn’t reached overwhelming levels. The bodies of those shot down became fuel for the fire…
