Chapter 181 – Bloodshot Eyes Behind the Scope
The bright sunlight shined upon a certain area in X City.
Amidst towering buildings and narrow streets, countless Zombies roamed slowly in the streets as far as the eye could see.
Their bodies appeared stiff in this sluggish motion, but their twisted faces and those bloodshot eyes were still filled with a bloodthirsty aura.
“Clank.”
A beverage can suddenly got knocked over from nowhere and rolled into the midst of the Zombies with a series of thuds.
Like a powder keg ignited, the surrounding dozens of Zombies immediately twisted their necks, seeking the source of the sound with their gazes.
At that moment, a petite figure and a giant, extremely ferocious Mutation Wolfdog appeared not far away.
All the Zombies uniformly turned their gaze towards them, like a scene from a terrifying silent film.
Growl.
The Mutation Wolfdog immediately let out a low, cautious growl.
The figure beside it quickly put a hand on the dog and whispered, “Wang Cai, haven’t I told you not to move until I say so? Be a good boy. I can let you devour your kind to evolve, or I can find another dog to devour you.”
The Mutation Wolfdog seemed to have some level of Intelligence, as it shivered all over upon hearing this, tucking its tail and slowly lowering its head.
Its build was much more robust compared to the thin silhouette beside it, but it showcased a submissive demeanor.
“The calling here has grown incredibly strong, but I haven’t discovered anything yet.”
The figure was naturally Ban Yue. She had somehow found an odd-looking t-shirt to wear, its chest area completely soaked in blood.
Through the V-shaped neckline, a wound could be seen stretching from below up to her neck, as though it had just begun to heal but was torn open again.
Another wound on her neck mirrored this, resembling a horrifying mouth gaping open on her fair throat.
The appearance of the Mutation Wolfdog stirred the Zombie horde, but Ban Yue’s Leader-Level pressure forbade them from getting too close.
“These low-level counterparts…” Ban Yue seemed a bit impatient but didn’t make a move. “Forget it, even though they are just low-level counterparts, they are still better than humans. That damned human not only stole my Mate but also left this wound that never fully heals. The toxin is so strong it’s being rejected by my blood… I should figure out what’s been calling me, and where it’s coming from. It keeps echoing in my head, making me want to dig into my Hindbrain…”
She patted Wang Cai before turning and walking towards the other end of the street.
As she turned around, her hair blew in the wind, revealing a flash of crimson.
The back of her head was already covered in blood from a severe wound…
Meanwhile, inside an Armored Jeep speeding down a broad country road, Ling Mo suddenly sneezed.
Meng Jiayu immediately turned to him with concern, “Ling Mo, did you catch a cold?”
“Huh? No, just a bit itchy,” Ling Mo said casually, rubbing his nose.
2 poked his head from the backseat, grinning, “Could it be that someone is thinking of you?”
“The people who would think of me are right here,” Ling Mo said indifferently. “Besides, even if any acquaintance is still alive, who would remember me out of the blue?”
“You never know. Take me, for instance. I always missed that nurse from my hospital days. She was one of those who admired me deeply. But I had to turn her down multiple times because our pelvic bones were incompatible. She was also slightly older, over thirty. She never understood my reasons and would slap me in hatred every time I refused her…”
2 rambled on sentimentally.
The Survivor sitting next to him, Zhang Haoyu, couldn’t help but laugh and interrupted, “You’re no more than sixteen, right? Of course, she’d slap you for messing around with a thirty-year-old woman. And mentioning pelvic bones too… By the way, which hospital were you staying in?”
“Don’t ask him, most likely a psychiatric hospital,” Ling Mo rolled his eyes.
Xia Na and the Three Girls sat beside him, uninterested in joining the conversation.
Li Yalin was not accustomed to being cramped in a small space with so many humans. Though her interactions with them over the past few days had made her slightly better, she was still visibly agitated. It took Ling Mo holding her hand to calm her down.
Ye Lian and Xia Na, on the other hand, were uninterested in the human conversation, especially Xia Na, who only perked up when something piqued her curiosity.
However, all three Female Zombies clung tightly to Ling Mo, making Meng Jiayu, seated beside them, feel her cheeks flush.
Had Ling Mo always been this bold and open?
Ling Mo was experiencing both pain and pleasure. Except for 2, everyone else looked at him with strange gazes, as if they saw him as a complete rogue.
In reality, he needed to comfort the three Female Zombies this way. Additionally, with humans around, the three Female Zombies naturally stuck close to him…
After about ten minutes, the scenery outside the window finally changed.
Ling Mo stuck his head out the window to take a look and, indeed, saw a complex of buildings not far away.
“That’s the Military District.”
Guo Chao, who had been silent throughout the journey, finally spoke.
To avoid driving straight into a horde of Zombies, the Jeep gradually slowed down, eventually stopping about 500 meters from the Military District.
After arming themselves, the group slowly approached the Military District.
This Military District wasn’t very large, usually housing only a regiment.
However, this information was provided by Guo Chao, who wasn’t entirely certain and could only give a rough estimate.
“Although the population isn’t large, there might still be some Advanced Zombies born here. However, the chance of encountering Advanced Zombies is quite low.”
Ling Mo felt a bit disappointed. The speed of zombie evolution and their strength had nothing to do with who they were before they mutated.
An ordinary old lady could turn into a crazed old lady after mutation, while a robust person might end up as one of the weak and get eliminated after turning into a Zombie.
Therefore, it was really hard to say if there would be any powerful Zombies in the Military District.
Of course, if there were no Zombies, getting some intel from the military would also be beneficial…
Guo Chao and his group’s primary goal was to seek mutual support with the Military District, hoping that together they could reestablish the Farmland. Relying on stored food wasn’t a long-term solution.
The base could accommodate a few hundred people, but finding more Survivors wouldn’t be feasible with just Guo Chao’s Survival Squad.
Although there was a possibility that the Military District might use force to take over the Food Production Base, Guo Chao thought it was unlikely. The threat posed by Ling Mo was much more significant.
If the Military District had such intentions, they would have already taken the Food Production Base long ago.
The Military District’s defenses and security were inherently stronger than any base. As long as they could regularly give up a portion of the food, they should be able to secure the Military District’s military support.
This kind of trade-off seemed worthwhile—it was a deal the Military District should be willing to make.
It did sound a bit like paying tribute, but Guo Chao believed that any means were acceptable if they could strengthen the base’s foundation.
“We should quietly approach from the side, and try not to get too close.”
Excitement naturally brought anxiety, and this was Guo Chao’s state of mind.
Ling Mo, on the other hand, remained calm, while 2 nervously rubbed his hands together with a smile, excited about something unknown.
They stuck closely to the side of the road, gradually approaching the Military District, now less than 200 meters away.
However, large patches of weeds obstructed their view. Even the Female Zombies with their excellent vision couldn’t see much.
“Ignore all this; let’s just proceed.”
Caution was necessary, but being overly cautious was cowardice. Ling Mo firmly gripped his Tang Sword and patted the Crossbow Bolts on his back, saying.
“Yeah, with Ling-Ge around, there’s no need to be this tense.”
Zhang Haoyu, who had also been a Survivor sitting in the Off-road Vehicle, was immensely grateful to Ling Mo, to the point of idolizing him.
Hearing Ling Mo’s words reassured him significantly, and he quickly echoed his sentiment.
Even Old Wang and Meng Jiayu nodded in agreement, indicating their support.
Guo Chao forced a smile, though a shadow briefly clouded his eyes. In this group, his words seemed to be losing weight…
The entrance to the Military District was eerily empty. There wasn’t a single human or even a Zombie in sight.
However, the area inside was vast, so judging it from just the entrance wasn’t helpful.
It was Ling Mo’s first time at the Military District, but fortunately, Old Wang was with him.
“Old Wang, you’re familiar with this place, right? We’re counting on you today.”
“The internal layout might be different, but I’ll do my best to guide us.”
Old Wang was a quiet person, but when it came to Ling Mo, he answered every question.
Each member of the group harbored their thoughts as they slowly approached the depths of the Military District.
“There might actually be Survivors here,” Ling Mo thought. Otherwise, the Square would be too clean, without even a single Zombie.
As for the lack of guards, it was understandable. Even if there were Survivors, there couldn’t have been many. It would be enough just to hold one place.
Meanwhile, far from Ling Mo and his group, on a distant rooftop, a dark figure lay behind a railing, coldly observing the group crossing the Square.
After a few seconds, he squinted, aiming his rifle at Old Wang, who was walking in the front.
However, his finger slowly pressed the trigger before quickly releasing it again.
But in the moment his eyes moved away, the blood-red glow flashing within them made everyone’s hearts skip a beat…
