Chapter 20 – Piercing Through the Thin Film

Now wasn’t the time to assign blame, especially since Ling Mo felt he owed these two idiots a bit of gratitude.

For the past couple of days, Ye Lian had been ravenous, desperately needing to feed… And Ling Mo had also hit a bottleneck. Maybe if Ye Lian evolved, he could break through this barrier and become stronger.

So, the terrifying Mutation Zombie wasn’t frightening in Ling Mo’s eyes; in fact, it felt incredibly endearing!

However, as his eyes gleamed, Ling Mo sensed that this Mutation Zombie seemed different from the ones they had encountered before. It appeared to be stronger… A little more strength was manageable, but they had to deal with it quickly!

Lu Xin’s agonized screams echoed through the supermarket, and soon Xia Na and Liu Yuhao would come rushing in. Even if they managed to kill the Mutation Zombie, extracting the Gel from its brain in front of everyone would be impossible. It would all be for nothing!

The Mutation Zombie, seeing Ling Mo and Ye Lian suddenly appear, didn’t hesitate and charged straight at them.

But what made Ling Mo’s heart skip a beat was that its target wasn’t him, but Ye Lian!

Sure enough, compared to regular zombies, Mutation Zombies prioritized attacking their own kind over humans.

“Damn it! How dare you attack Ye Lian? You’re asking for death!” Seeing the Mutation Zombie rush towards Ye Lian, Ling Mo erupted in anger. He decided to reduce his control over Ye Lian to the minimum, letting her act freely. Meanwhile, he drew his Short Knife and sidestepped to the Mutation Zombie’s flank.

As soon as Ye Lian was freed, the terrifying aura around her surged. Her black eyes were filled with unrestrained Frenzy and killing intent! Influenced by their Psychic Link, Ling Mo also felt his blood flow speed up, and his focus zeroed in on the Mutation Zombie!

Compared to the Mutation Zombie’s brute strength, Ye Lian was slightly lacking in power, but she had the advantage of being small and agile. Her quick, nimble movements allowed her to dodge more effectively, and her attack speed was a few notches faster than the Mutation Zombie’s. However, the environment here was quite unfavorable, with one side against a wall and the other lined with shelves.

The Mutation Zombie, a massive fatty, could cover both Ye Lian and Ling Mo within its attack range just by swinging an arm. This made it nearly impossible for Ling Mo, armed with a Short Knife, to get close enough for a direct attack.

For the moment, Ye Lian wasn’t in immediate danger, but she also wasn’t gaining the upper hand. In fact, she was starting to lose ground.

This was because, influenced by Ling Mo’s Psychic Link, Ye Lian’s fighting style wasn’t as desperate as the Mutation Zombie’s… The Mutation Zombie, driven purely by instinct, wouldn’t stop attacking as long as it had a breath left. Defense wasn’t even a consideration. Although Ling Mo had already slashed it several times, it seemed utterly unaffected!

Credit must go to its layers of horrifying fat; a single slash barely reached the muscles, let alone the bones.

By now, the sounds of Xia Na and the others approaching were audible. They needed to speed things up!

In this urgent situation, a fierce resolve surged within Ling Mo. He abandoned his strategy of flanking attacks and charged directly at the Mutation Zombie from the front!

This way, even if the Mutation Zombie ignored him, it would be forced to attack him. As the Mutation Zombie’s massive, powerful hand reached for him, Ling Mo’s eyes suddenly became incredibly focused and calm.

In that critical moment, relying on the willpower he had developed over time, Ling Mo suppressed his fear and concentrated entirely on the Mutation Zombie’s Psychic Light Cluster!

“Buzz!”

A deeply uncomfortable sensation immediately overwhelmed Ling Mo. It felt as if a lump of blood was stuck in his chest, making it hard to breathe, and his head spun.

Controlling two Mutation Zombies at once was indeed a new challenge. Unlike regular zombies, Mutation Zombies had stronger instincts, and controlling them inflicted a mental backlash on Ling Mo!

Especially when both Mutation Zombies were engaged in combat!

It was a fight to the death! With a surge of determination, Ling Mo managed to hold on!

In those brief fractions of a second, it felt to Ling Mo as if an entire day had passed. Yet, even so, when he sensed he had finally gained control over the Mutation Zombie’s body, he wanted to burst out laughing!

He never imagined that under such circumstances, he could succeed. The growth in his Psychic Power had indeed significantly boosted his abilities.

But excitement aside, as soon as he gained control of the Mutation Zombie, Ye Lian, who had already circled behind the creature, swiftly extracted the Gel from its brain. As the massive body collapsed with a thud, Ling Mo took the Gel from Ye Lian’s hand and excitedly tucked it into his pocket.

However, as soon as the battle ended, Ling Mo suddenly felt a wave of dizziness, and a stream of warm liquid began to flow from his nostrils.

Just then, Xia Na and Liu Yuhao arrived, witnessing the scene of the collapsing body and Ling Mo’s nose bleeding profusely.

“Are you okay?” Xia Na asked anxiously, while Liu Yuhao stood there, staring in shock.

“I’m fine.” A nosebleed was a minor issue. Successfully controlling two Mutation Zombies was a breakthrough for Ling Mo! He could clearly feel that although his combat abilities hadn’t evolved, his Psychic Power had completely pierced through that thin membrane!

This wasn’t achieved through Ye Lian’s evolution, but through his own efforts and determination! How could Ling Mo not be ecstatic about this sense of accomplishment?

Seeing that Ling Mo seemed to be alright, Xia Na shifted her gaze to the two people on the ground.

The one who had been dismembered was undoubtedly dead, but surprisingly, Lu Xin was still alive. He had a horrific wound across his back, but it hadn’t reached his internal organs. When Liu Yuhao turned him over, Lu Xin was still conscious.

“Ah…” Lu Xin groaned in pain, but hardly anyone paid attention to him.

Whether it was the terrifying corpse of the Mutation Zombie on the ground or the still-breathing person, both drew more attention than Lu Xin.

Only Liu Yuhao quickly pulled out bandages and a hemostatic agent, starting to treat Lu Xin’s wounds. But as Lu Xin groaned in pain, his eyes, filled with intense hatred, remained fixed on Ling Mo.

Why! Why didn’t he save him! Ling Mo could have easily saved him at that moment!

Lu Xin’s heart was filled with deep-seated resentment, but the death of the Mutation Zombie made it clear to him that no matter how much he hated Ling Mo, he dared not provoke him!

“He’s almost dead.”

Xia Na walked up to the dismembered companion and said softly.

But he was still twitching, still breathing, and even a hint of pleading showed in his dim eyes.

Even at this moment, no one truly wished to die. From his eyes, it was evident that he still wanted to live, that he didn’t want to die, even in such excruciating pain…

But as the blade suddenly flashed before his eyes, that glimmer quickly faded, and the image of Xia Na swinging the knife was the last thing reflected in his wide-open eyes.

“Ah!”

A girl immediately covered her mouth and screamed, while Ling Mo showed a hint of approval.
