Chapter 222 – The Castle on the Isolated Island
After Black Silk darted out of a haunted house, the ordinary zombies that had been following were mostly left behind.
Only five or six extremely fast zombies were still in pursuit.
“Mutation Zombies!”
Ling Mo, who was waiting outside, immediately flashed a smile, and his Psychic Tentacle whipped out.
The Mutation Zombies, which had been sprinting forward desperately, suddenly froze in place. Black Silk quickly turned and pounced on one of them, its claws tearing open the zombie’s chest.
Ye Lian and the three girls also rushed over, and in the blink of an eye, they had extracted the Virus Gel from all of them.
This was already the fifth batch of Mutation Zombies that Ling Mo and his group had killed.
As for the Virus Gel they had collected… Ling Mo opened his pocket and counted excitedly, announcing a number: “Thirty pieces!”
The only downside was that they hadn’t encountered any Advanced Zombies. Ling Mo had even deliberately walked brazenly in the middle of the road, but still couldn’t lure any out.
“The zombies here are definitely numerous, but the area is too large, and the zombies are too dispersed…”
Ling Mo shook his head with a bit of regret.
If it weren’t for this, their hunting efficiency could have been several times higher.
“Can’t be too greedy…”
Ling Mo quickly reminded himself. If the zombies were really densely packed, even Black Silk could easily be injured or killed.
Moreover, if something went wrong, it would be a total disaster.
No matter how strong a Leader-Level Zombie is, Ling Mo still had an ordinary human body. If surrounded by thousands of zombies in an open area, it would still be a dead end.
Black Silk was circling Ling Mo like it was presenting a treasure. After a brief hesitation, Ling Mo tossed it a lower-quality piece of Virus Gel.
With a snap of its jaws, Black Silk caught the gel, and its eyes turned even redder.
It shuddered and then let out a low growl.
Black Silk’s evolution was clearly different from that of zombies. It wasn’t the type that would immediately evolve after absorbing the virus.
Ling Mo figured this was because, although the zombie virus and the Mutation Beast virus were related, they had diverged significantly.
This led to a conversion and fusion process that could take varying amounts of time. Ling Mo, having no prior experience, found it difficult to judge.
“Let’s just take a break.”
Using this method to hunt for Virus Gel wasn’t overly exhausting for Ling Mo and the three female zombies.
But Black Silk was utterly exhausted, its tongue hanging out as it panted heavily.
Moreover, they had already ventured deep into the Amusement Park and had been walking for quite a while.
This decision was immediately supported by Ye Lian and the three girls. Xia Na quickly pointed to a nearby Huxin Island and said, “Let’s go there!”
“Alright.”
Huxin Island was essentially a large Castle, likely an area designated for performances.
Ling Mo left Black Silk at the bridgehead and led Ye Lian and the three girls onto the island.
One side of the narrow long bridge was collapsed, and the water surface was black and reeked of a foul stench.
There were probably many rotting bodies in the water, causing Ling Mo to wrinkle his nose, though Ye Lian and the three girls were unaffected.
There were no zombies visible on the island, but there were some corpses and bloodstains.
After circling the Castle, Ling Mo found a wooden door.
To the left of the door was a ticket booth, with promotional and explanatory text nearby.
As Ling Mo suspected, this was indeed a venue for performances.
“Should we go in? In movies, places like this are usually haunted by ghosts. I guess here it would be haunted by zombies.”
Just as Ling Mo turned to ask, a dark shadow flashed by, and the wooden door was kicked open.
Looking back, Xia Na had already disappeared inside…
“I never knew she was interested in places like this…”
Turning on his flashlight, Ling Mo followed closely behind.
Li Yalin and Ye Lian stayed by his side, ensuring that even if Advanced Zombies ambushed them, they would be fine.
The interior of the Castle was very large, with two levels. Xia Na had evidently rushed into the first level, and Ling Mo had no choice but to follow.
However, to Ling Mo’s surprise, it didn’t seem like there were any zombies here.
There weren’t even any skeletons, and there were few bloodstains.
“When the disaster struck, people here must have been queuing outside, right? The introduction outside said there was a show every three hours.” Just as Ling Mo finished speaking, a sudden scream echoed from within.
“What happened?”
Ling Mo quickly ran inside, shifting his gaze towards Xia Na.
Xia Na’s eyes were fixed on a figure, who, surprisingly, didn’t seem to be a Zombie…
By the time Ling Mo reached the Backstage, the figure was already standing up nervously.
Shining his flashlight, Ling Mo saw a female Survivor, probably in her thirties. She looked pale and gaunt, her cheeks deeply sunken, clearly suffering from prolonged malnutrition.
Her eyes were filled with terror, and she pressed herself against the wall as she faced Xia Na.
To think there would be Survivors in this Amusement Park… But then again, this isolated island was indeed an ideal hiding spot.
Seeing three more people appear, the two Survivors’ expressions grew even more terrified. Soon, another figure emerged from a small door behind them.
“Don’t be afraid, they’re also Survivors.”
The newcomer spoke calmly as soon as she appeared.
Although Xia Na’s Scythe was quite conspicuous, this person didn’t react with the same panic as the other woman.
“You aren’t Survivors from the park, are you?”
The person took a step forward, asking.
Whether intentionally or not, she positioned herself directly under the beam of Ling Mo’s flashlight.
She appeared to be a woman in her twenties, with an unremarkable appearance, certainly less striking than Ye Lian and the three girls. However, her expression was calm, exuding a sense of resilience.
She was also quite thin, but seemed much more spirited than the other female Survivor.
As Ling Mo sized her up, she in turn scrutinized Ling Mo and his group.
Fully armed, each person carried supplies, and Ling Mo even had a gun slung over his shoulder.
The woman’s eyes immediately lit up with excitement. Fixing her gaze on Ling Mo, she stepped forward, trembling with eagerness, and asked, “Are you military?”
“Uh…”
Seeing the woman shaking with excitement, Ling Mo could only shake his head regretfully, “No.”
“You’re not?”
Her expression turned to disappointment, but she quickly regained her composure, “Then what are you doing in a place like this? There’s nothing left to find here.”
Indeed, typical Survivors wouldn’t venture into a place like this.
But Ling Mo couldn’t reveal his true purpose, so he asked instead, “How long have you been hiding here?”
“Here? Over three months,” the woman replied while pushing open a door. “Come in and sit. It’s fate that we’re alive and meeting each other.”
In truth, Ling Mo wanted to turn around and leave, but seeing how emaciated they were, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pity.
This was the first time he’d seen Survivors this thin; it was something he’d only seen in disaster movies before.
Ling Mo hesitated slightly, noticing the other female Survivor still looking at him anxiously, and sighed.
“Alright, let’s go in and take a look.”
The inside was spacious and divided into many small rooms, likely Dressing Rooms.
A faint, musty smell filled the air. Upon entering, Ling Mo saw about a dozen people.
They had heard the scream but were too afraid to come out and investigate.
Most of these people were women, with a couple of older men among them.
As soon as Ling Mo and his group entered, they all shrank back, appearing very nervous.
Ling Mo frowned immediately; there was no way these people could have survived this long on their own.
The woman who led them in seemed to notice Ling Mo’s confusion and whispered, “There are a few men, but they went out to look for food.”
“Where do they go?” Ling Mo asked, puzzled.
The woman pointed behind her and said, “There’s another small bridge over there, safer than the main entrance. But you all are really strong; it must have been tough getting here. Did you lose a lot of people?”
She asked half out of curiosity, half probing.
Ling Mo shook his head, “Not really.”
For some reason, Ling Mo felt something was off about the way this woman looked at him.
It wasn’t the usual joy at encountering fellow Survivors; it was a mix of excitement and a hint of fear and hesitation.
And she wasn’t the only one. Among the group, some had the same look in their eyes.
