Chapter 253 – Let’s Try It Out
“This is the place.”
Ling Mo led the way into a small shop, where several zombie corpses lay strewn about haphazardly.
Black Silk was crouched there. The moment Ling Mo entered, it leaped gently and instantly appeared in front of him, then started rubbing against his pant leg.
“After evolving, not only has its size shrunk, but it’s also become more reserved in its displays of affection. Good, it finally has some semblance of femininity.”
Ling Mo casually patted its head, then turned to look at the entrance.
“It’s just a dog. No matter how reserved it acts, it’s still a dog!”
Ye Lian and the three girls had followed closely behind. As Xia Na spoke, she tried to pull down the rolling shutter, but it was so rusted that it wouldn’t budge.
“Besides its appearance, what else about it resembles a traditional dog?”
Ling Mo glanced down at Black Silk, which was currently lifting a front leg to scratch its chin lightly.
“Doesn’t it?”
Xia Na smiled as she walked up to Black Silk and extended her hand.
Black Silk let out a low growl, and just as it was about to place its front leg on her hand, Xia Na said, “Lift your hind leg and pee a little for us.”
“Hey…”
Ye Lian attempted to push a cabinet over, but it was clearly too large to fit the doorway. She had to give up and looked to Ling Mo for guidance.
“Let’s go to the second floor. There’s a smell of blood here; if zombies come, closing the door won’t help.”
Ling Mo quickly made a decision.
On the second floor, there was an office facing the street. After closing the door, Ling Mo had Black Silk stand guard at the top of the stairs.
He then found a place to sit down and had Li Yalin stand by the window, switching his view to her perspective.
If an ordinary human were discovered, zombies would immediately rush over without hesitation.
But the only ones brave enough to seek out a Leader-Level Zombie were likely other zombies of the same rank or Mutation Beasts.
Ling Mo had Li Yalin stand there to both observe the situation outside and to guard against any Leader-Level Zombies that might be lurking in the area.
Given the capabilities of Tom and Sun Zeya, a Leader-Level Zombie could easily lead to their group’s annihilation.
In fact, playing music would be safest if Ling Mo controlled a zombie to do it.
But it’s obvious that for humans who harbor extreme hatred for zombies, collaborating with one is out of the question.
Even if the zombie is under human control, it would still incite fear and suspicion.
“So, from any angle, I have to hide my superpower.”
With this thought, Ling Mo scratched his head in resignation.
The street looked desolate, with an overturned bus lying at the intersection. Behind the bus, several zombies could be seen.
They moved like mindless shadows, but everyone knew that the slightest disturbance would “awaken” them, turning them into frenzied killing machines.
“Sun Zeya’s side should be almost ready… But to ensure the plan’s success, it’s safer if I’m personally involved.”
After settling himself, Ling Mo extended a psychic tentacle outward.
This invisible psychic tentacle stretched out like a probe, weaving its way among the zombies before entering the mind of a small female zombie.
The zombie immediately stopped swaying, and her frenzied blood-red eyes blinked, gradually calming down.
She slowly moved to the side and slipped into a small room along the corner…
By this time, Tom and the others had reached their designated position. He flashed his wrist at the window, allowing a bit of sunlight to reflect off his watch.
Sun Zeya received the signal instantly. She turned her head, took a deep breath, and looked at the phone on the air conditioner unit.
She was the only one left there; as soon as she pressed the button, the seemingly silent scene would be instantly shattered.
“I won’t die here.”
Sun Zeya took a deep breath, grinned, and then slammed her finger down on the button.
The music exploded, shattering the quiet of the street!
In that instant, it felt like time had paused for everyone.
Tom and the others stood behind the curtains with their guns, nervously watching through their scopes as Sun Zeya jumped into the room.
“Holy crap! Couldn’t she have picked a song with an intro at least?”
Ling Mo also felt his scalp tingle.
He knew that Sun Zeya did this to immediately attract more zombies, but this was too risky!
All the zombies within sight abruptly stopped moving and turned their heads toward the source of the sound.
Almost simultaneously with Sun Zeya jumping into the room, hundreds of zombies started moving!
These zombies moved at a speed comparable to that of sprinters, incredibly fast!
Especially drawn by the sound, they instantly entered a state of extreme frenzy.
The bus was soon swarmed with zombies. Dozens of them jumped onto the bus, scrambling down with hands and feet, quickly approaching the source of the music.
Meanwhile, many zombies burst out of the buildings, with one even falling from a sixth-floor window, landing heavily on the ground with a thud.
In just a second or two, hundreds of zombies flooded the street, creating a truly shocking scene!
The team members hiding behind the curtains felt cold sweat soaking their backs.
Wang Heng aimed at the improvised Molotov cocktails, beads of sweat forming densely on his forehead.
“Captain Sun, stay alive…”
At this moment, the foremost zombie had already reached the building’s entrance, but Tom calmly shot it down with his silenced submachine gun.
They needed to buy Sun Zeya as much time as possible.
If the plan failed and hundreds or even thousands of zombies blocked the street, not only would the exploration mission be impossible, but everyone would also be trapped by the zombie horde.
The survivors standing in the corner showed extreme tension on their faces. Yang Ying’s expression was the most distressed.
Having lost her backing and offended Sun Zeya, now she had to endure such a terrifying situation…
She covered her face and buried her head deeply, as if doing so would block out all the sounds.
“The zombies are here.”
As soon as Sun Zeya dashed out of the room, she heard the sound of a zombie hitting the door downstairs.
There was only one thud, indicating that the zombie had been shot.
“Nice shooting, but they probably won’t hold for long.”
Sun Zeya grabbed the silenced submachine gun placed by the door, closed the door behind her, and ran down the hallway toward the stairs leading up.
Just as she disappeared at the stairwell, dozens of zombies were already frantically squeezing into the building. Some zombies were stepping over others, trying to climb up, while others grabbed onto the drainpipe to ascend.
Tom and the others couldn’t shoot fast enough to stop them, and could only take down a few.
“The zombies are about to enter the room…” Wang Heng whispered.
He felt sweat blurring his vision, the sting making him want to squint.
But the zombies could appear at the window any moment, and he had to shoot before the improvised Molotov cocktail was knocked over.
From their angle, it was difficult to ignite the gasoline below just by shooting; the purpose of placing the improvised Molotov cocktails was to start a fire.
“Prepare to shoot,” Tom’s voice came from the side.
“But we haven’t seen Captain Sun yet,” Wang Heng replied softly. “If she hasn’t escaped, she’ll be burned alive.”
Tom was silent for a moment, then firmly said, “We have to trust Sun Zeya. She may seem unreliable, but she’s not easy to kill.”
Wang Heng’s pupils narrowed slightly, then he nodded silently.
The atmosphere became extremely tense in an instant.
Sun Zeya had already reached the door to the rooftop, and at the stairwell she had just passed, there was a firecracker with a burning fuse.
When more than twenty zombies reached the room door and began frantically pounding on it, the firecracker suddenly exploded.
“BANG!”
The loud explosion drowned out the music, immediately drawing the zombies’ attention.
They instantly abandoned the door and rushed toward the source of the explosion.
At this moment, Sun Zeya had already pushed open the iron door to the rooftop and stepped out, letting out a cheerful whistle.
“That should buy me some time. Those zombies won’t find me.”
Just as Sun Zeya turned to close the iron door, her eyes widened.
Five fingers appeared on the edge of the door…
