Chapter 279 – The Kissing Manic
About ten minutes later, Ling Mo suddenly leaned forward and whispered, “They’re here!”
The team members immediately raised their guns, aiming in the direction he pointed.
Soon, several figures appeared within their line of sight.
Their breathing became rapid, and they instinctively took two steps back, though their guns remained steady.
“Phew! It’s Captain Xia and her team! Thank goodness they’re not Zombies…”
One of the team members finally recognized the incoming figures and breathed a sigh of relief.
Their nerves had been tightly wound for the past ten minutes.
Ling Mo didn’t rashly reveal that he could detect approaching enemies in advance. His Psychic Tentacle was nothing like Chen Youdong’s Skynet, and its effectiveness entirely depended on his Psychic Power.
Despite repeatedly absorbing the saliva of Ye Lian and the three girls, and even being labeled as a kissing maniac by these team members, he still couldn’t keep up with the Psychic Power consumption rate.
Thus, the antenna detection ability of the Psychic Tentacle had been gradually weakening over the past ten minutes.
Detecting Xia Zhining and her team from over thirty meters away was already the limit of Ling Mo’s endurance.
“Who knew kissing could be such a physical task? At least they’re finally here.” Ling Mo thought, helplessly touching his slightly numb lips.
Ling Mo and his team suddenly emerged from the corner, startling Xia Zhining and her group.
“It’s you guys.” One of them lowered their gun, somewhat dazed, and asked, “How are things on your side?”
A team member standing next to Ling Mo replied, “We’re okay, the big guy is dead. Everyone else is fine.”
“We thought you had retreated and were probably dead by now.”
The person gave a bitter smile and said, “We’ve lost several people on our side, and we’ve only just started the mission. Retreating here was our only option.”
Upon hearing this, the team members following Ling Mo showed expressions of sorrow but couldn’t help exchanging grateful glances.
If it weren’t for Ling Mo, they would likely have already become a feast for the Zombies.
Xia Zhining was in a disheveled state, her face smeared with soot, looking quite worse for wear.
The people with her were all pale-faced, especially Lin Tianxiang, who seemed barely able to stand.
Zhou Guocheng was covered in blood, holding up Lin Tianxiang with one hand and supporting Chen Youdong with the other.
There were only two team members left with them, their casualties significantly higher than Ling Mo’s group.
“Are these variation zombies the main force or just scattered minions?” Chen Youdong asked, frowning.
Lin Tianxiang leaned against the wall, his chest heaving, and weakly said, “I hope they are the main force…”
“Impossible. The report mentioned a particularly powerful variation zombie leading them. These must be just some scattered stragglers. The real trouble lies ahead,” Xia Zhining shook her head.
She noticed the others staring at the holes in her clothes and let out a displeased grunt, then pulled a jacket from her backpack to cover herself.
Ling Mo noticed burn marks on her body. She had likely chosen to wear leather specifically because of these marks. If it had been any other fabric, it’s hard to imagine what state she would be in now…
“If some variation zombies have been scattered, it means the main force might not be as large. We don’t need to be too despairing,” Chen Youdong said, forcing a smile.
But everyone knew his words were just to keep up morale, and no one responded.
He then turned to Ling Mo and asked quietly, “You can see the current situation. I know you can withdraw from the mission at any time…”
“I’m not scared off yet,” Ling Mo said, rubbing his forehead.
These variation zombies were a considerable threat to ordinary team members, but for Ling Mo, they were still within his risk tolerance.
Chen Youdong immediately smiled, “That’s great. If we complete the mission, I’ll submit a report recommending that you receive extra compensation.”
After a ten-minute rest, Chen Youdong once again used his Skynet ability to probe the interior of the compartment.
“The rest of the Subway Station has been searched, and we haven’t found any trace of Team Tom, nor have we seen any more bodies. They most likely entered the train,” Lin Tianxiang, sitting next to Ling Mo, explained while adjusting his glasses.
“Isn’t that an obvious fact? Dr, can you tell us something we don’t already know?” Zhou Guocheng scoffed from where he was squatting nearby.
“Don’t interrupt.” Lin Tianxiang continued, “We currently have five grenades left, and each of us has about a hundred rounds of ammunition. We can’t recover the lost weapons, so this is all we have to work with.”
Zhou Guocheng let out a dry laugh, “Dr, you sure know how to comfort people.”
“At least we haven’t run out of ammo and supplies yet,” Lin Tianxiang said, taking a sip of water.
The others remained silent. Even Xia Zhining, leaning against the wall, was quietly observing Ye Lian and the three girls standing beside Ling Mo.
“Are they superhumans too?” she suddenly asked.
Xia Na glanced back at her and raised an eyebrow, “No.”
Xia Zhining turned her gaze to Xia Na, then silently lowered her hand, though her eyes were filled with suspicion.
The others also turned their eyes to Ye Lian and the three girls, clearly harboring doubts.
Since they wouldn’t admit it, and Ling Mo had no intention of bringing it up, their suspicions remained unspoken.
“I couldn’t detect any Psychic Fluctuations, but I did sense a barrier,” Chen Youdong suddenly opened his eyes and said.
“Does that mean they’re really inside? Everyone, are you ready?” Xia Zhining immediately stood up, gripping a Dagger in her hand, and asked coldly.
“Whoo!”
Several team members took deep breaths and tightened their grips on their Submachine guns.
“Ready!”
Lin Tianxiang pushed away Zhou Guocheng’s outstretched arm, stood up, and said in a deep voice.
Zhou Guocheng muttered a curse under his breath and pulled Ling Mo up, “Ling Mo, be extra careful and make sure your girls don’t get hurt.”
“Got it.” Ling Mo smiled and nodded.
Xia Zhining squeezed through the crack of the half-open train door, like entering a pitch-black maw.
Zhou Guocheng and the others followed closely, slipping through the gap one by one, leaving only Ling Mo and his group outside.
“Is Black Silk okay?” Xia Na asked, concerned about her dog.
Ling Mo briefly switched his vision and saw Black Silk lurking in a corner, ready to ambush a Mutation Zombie.
“It’s fine. It’s having some fun up there. When we move, I’ll have it follow us,” Ling Mo replied.
Li Yalin grabbed Ling Mo and moved to the front. “I’ll lead.”
“Senior Sister has become so considerate,” Ling Mo said, touched.
Just as she was about to pass through the door crack, Li Yalin turned and glanced at Ling Mo, her eyes suddenly shining like two dazzling red gems. “I’m very interested in this place…”
“You could at least pretend to comfort me,” Ling Mo said, rolling his eyes in exasperation.
As Ye Lian passed by Ling Mo, she suddenly patted him.
“You… you just kissed me twice! But… you kissed Senior Sister three times!” Ye Lian’s eyes flickered with a hint of red.
She seemed to realize that such words shouldn’t be said so expressionlessly. After a brief pause, she slowly pouted, furrowing her brows, and put on a look of grievance.
But her dazed expression only made Ling Mo want to pinch her cheeks rather than feel any other emotion.
“Senior Sister is Leader-Level and recovers faster. We can’t let you lose your combat ability just to replenish my Psychic Power,” Ling Mo explained, smiling as he touched her cheek. “Ye Lian getting jealous is worth celebrating… maybe with a chest pinch or two.”
With a lingering touch, Ling Mo squeezed through the crack himself.
The overwhelming stench of decay hit him immediately, making him cover his nose. “How many people died in here…”
Ahead, Xia Zhining had already turned on her flashlight. In such an enclosed space, having a light source made little difference; the zombies’ vision was good enough to put Night Vision Goggles to shame.
