Chapter 320 – The Horror of the Shattered Ground
The battle near the station raged on for three full days.
The air was thick with the stench of blood and the haze of gunpowder, making the sky seem as if it had turned black.
Everywhere you looked, there were ruins caused by explosions, and the ground was piled so high with corpses that you could barely see the road.
Tens of thousands of zombies met their end here, while soldiers continuously streamed in from A City to replace those who were tired or injured.
As for the bodies of the fallen, they were simply abandoned on the battlefield.
In reality, many of the wounded soldiers brought to the rear likely faced the same fate death.
During these three days, Ling Mo gained a thorough understanding of Falcon Camp’s current strength.
For him, it was like uncovering a small part of humanity’s power.
He even controlled a few zombies passing by the Residential Compound to experience the battle up close.
The results were clear: Falcon Camp, the largest survivor settlement near X City, was indeed formidable.
Tanks stood firm within the zombie hordes, crisscrossing fire, grenades, and makeshift fire lines created from barrels of oil…
In terms of weaponry and equipment, they couldn’t compare to the military exercises Ling Mo had seen on TV, but their tactics were impressively flexible.
Most of the soldiers, however, were not professional war machines.
Ling Mo heard their terrified shouts and even screams more than once.
Their marksmanship wasn’t great, often inferior to those Ling Mo had previously worked with.
In Ling Mo’s view, many of them were likely just ordinary survivors.
To receive the camp’s protection and get food, they had no choice but to pick up weapons and fight.
For some, just pointing the gun forward and pulling the trigger was an achievement.
Luckily, precise aiming wasn’t necessary. Designated soldiers guided them to point their guns in the right direction.
The intersecting lines of fire were sufficient to deal with most ordinary zombies.
So, while the soldiers’ skills were average, their command was quite effective.
From their combat actions, it was evident that Falcon Camp had substantial experience in fighting zombies.
Falcon Camp had prepared thoroughly for different types of zombies.
Although they had been forced to fall back several times, even retreating into the station at the end, they managed to hold their ground overall.
Among the superhumans, the one who stood out the most was the crazy guy with the wild hair.
“Zombies, come on, come bite me! Ahahahahaha…”
For three days, he stood on top of a tank, waving his arms and shouting.
Such a provocative act naturally attracted hordes of zombies.
But he always managed to fend them off with bursts of flame just in time, and then the tank’s cannon would fire, sending chunks of flesh flying everywhere.
“Ahahaha, come on, come on! Everyone, give it your all! Hurry up and bite me! Look over here, want a bite?”
As he spoke, he slashed his arm with his Tactical Knife, laughing maniacally as he raised his arm high and flung his blood forward.
“Damn… this guy is a real lunatic.”
Ling Mo thought to himself that he could never be this crazy. Strangely, the more he watched, the more familiar this guy seemed, but he couldn’t recall where he had seen him before.
“Hmph, what a reckless human,” Xia Na suddenly said, her gaze turning to the other side of the road. “The smell of blood here has attracted zombies from even farther away. And look, Ling-Ge…”
Ling Mo followed her gaze. At first, he only saw some small black dots in the distance, but as they drew closer, he felt a chill run down his spine.
“Holy crap…”
Mutation Beasts!
A species generally stronger than zombies!
Although limited in number and size, each Mutation Beast posed a significant threat to humans.
Moreover, they evolved faster than zombies!
Born hunters… no, they were born meat grinders!
A Mutation Rhino, as large as a tank, instantly drew everyone’s attention.
Its massive body, covered in skin like red iron plating, charged with frenzied speed, making the ground tremble with its approach!
The zombies in its path had no chance to resist; they were thrown aside like sandbags and crushed into pulp under its feet.
“Holy crap, good thing I’ve never encountered this beast. It must have escaped from the zoo…”
Ling Mo felt a chill down his spine. Behind this Mutation Rhino were a Mutation Elephant and several other mutation animals—Mutation Horses, Mutation Deer, and even Mutation Sheep!
These normally docile animals, once mutated, became terrifyingly aggressive!
Many of them had mutated after being bitten, their natural advantages greatly amplified.
For instance, horns sharp as a Sharp Knife or powerful hooves posed a significant threat to ordinary humans.
Who knows where these terrifying creatures usually roamed, but now they were all drawn here by the overwhelming scent of blood!
“Dear God! Here come the big ones! Prepare the cannon! Fire, fire!”
Yuwen Xuan shouted urgently.
He didn’t need to say it twice; the sound of gunfire immediately drowned out the noise of the two behemoths charging.
However, bullets hitting their skin were no more effective than hitting steel plates!
The abandoned cars forming the defensive lines were tossed aside like toys.
The front tank was rammed directly, its cannon fired at the Mutation Rhino with a muffled blast, but it only made the beast flip the tank over in a frenzy.
“Boom!”
An explosion enveloped the Mutation Rhino in flames, and just as everyone breathed a sigh of relief, it emerged, charred but still charging.
Its exterior was mangled and bloody, but it hadn’t been fatally wounded!
“It’s got open wounds now, aim for the flesh!”
Bullets thudded into its bleeding flesh, but even in its tough muscle, they only penetrated slightly before being stopped.
“This thing is insane! Compared to it, human combat power is truly pathetic!”
Ling Mo marveled privately. Just this one Mutation Rhino could likely obliterate Falcon Camp’s last two lines of defense!
Two superhumans rushed to confront it but were immediately and violently knocked down.
“Ah! Help!”
One of the superhumans screamed as he hit the ground, only to be crushed into a bloody pulp with a sickening squelch.
The other managed to scramble a few meters away, but the Mutation Elephant sucked him up with its trunk, its powerful suction pulling him into the air. The trunk wrapped around him, and then slammed him headfirst into the ground.
“Thud!”
The sight of bright red blood and the brutal death sent shivers down everyone’s spine.
“They’re really too strong. Even for us, it might be…”
Xia Na didn’t finish her sentence, but Ling Mo, pale-faced, nodded in agreement. “These beasts… they’re like living war machines.”
Ye Lian’s eyes also turned red, clearly sensing the threat.
“It’s okay, if we can’t beat them, we can still run, right? Besides, there might only be one or two of these Mutation Beasts in the entire X City. No need to worry too much.”
Ling Mo quickly reassured them.
He was right. This was a city, not the wilderness.
In urban combat, there were always hidden dangers. Zombies could suddenly pop out from the greenery by the roadside, silently shouting “Demacia” before launching a surprise attack. But for survivors, the complex environment also meant more opportunities for survival.
Ling Mo preferred surviving in the city, especially with three female zombies and a dog with a human’s mind at his side.
“Woof!”
Suddenly, Black Silk’s bark echoed from downstairs. Ling Mo peeked out and his eyes widened.
A Mutation Python had appeared in the yard, staring down Black Silk from just two meters away.
Black Silk crouched on the wall, warily eyeing the five-meter-long Mutation Python.
The python wasn’t very large, but its head was raised high, level with the wall, flicking its tongue dangerously as if ready to strike at any moment.
“Right, these creatures have a keener sense of smell than zombies. It’s sneaky, avoiding the battlefield to ambush us.”
It wasn’t just the python in the yard; Ling Mo noticed more pythons slithering up the walls, climbing the pipes.
“Damn, they’re everywhere!”
Footnote:
- Demacia(德玛西亚): In the game League of Legends, “Demacia” is a fictional kingdom known for its values of honor, justice, and bravery. When players play as certain characters from Demacia, like Garen, they often shout “Demacia!” when initiating an attack. This has become a popular phrase among Chinese players to describe surprise attacks or sudden engagements. So, when someone says, they are humorously describing a situation where a player launches a surprise attack while shouting this iconic phrase.
