Chapter 336 – Everything I Can Get, Half Is Yours
Zhang Yu said they had some matters to handle first, so he didn’t immediately take Wu Pengfei and Luo Ni away.
Ling Mo guessed that what they needed to deal with was most likely related to the deceased Intelligence Team member.
However, seeing their calm expressions, it seemed solving this issue wouldn’t be too difficult for them.
The look Yuwen Xuan gave Ling Mo before leaving, though, was quite intriguing.
Ling Mo figured that Yuwen Xuan might start taking action as early as tomorrow.
But how to steal the test subject and get it to Ling Mo required careful planning.
After Zhang Yu and Yuwen Xuan left, only Ling Mo and his group were left standing there, looking at each other.
“Alright, let’s head to my place first. Tonight, we’ll stay together, and tomorrow we’ll see what they have to say.”
Ling Mo adjusted the backpack on his shoulder and said.
He glanced at the Communicator in his hand, which was currently turned on.
This type of Communicator had a very long standby time, and Ling Mo also had a hand crank generator, so leaving it on all night wouldn’t be a problem.
Wu Pengfei and Luo Ni, on the other hand, were both eyeing the Communicator with curiosity, their gazes akin to those of people seeing an iPhone for the first time, eager to shout “take my kidney for it!”
“Hey, you guys are modern people, for goodness’ sake. Can you show a bit of restraint?”
Ling Mo felt goosebumps from their stares and quickly stuffed the Communicator into his pocket.
Wu Pengfei reluctantly shifted his gaze to Ling Mo’s pocket and rubbed his hands together. “Sigh, it’s been half a year since I’ve touched any electronic devices. No signal, no power, those things are just junk now. We didn’t appreciate them when we had them, but now, returning to a primitive state, we realize the benefits of the high-tech era. This is truly appreciating what we had…”
Ling Mo paused, feeling a bit nostalgic himself. “Yeah. Besides fighting, the only entertainment left is probably making love. Right?”
He cast a questioning glance at Wu Pengfei, then inadvertently glanced at Luo Ni.
“Don’t! Don’t ask me!” Luo Ni’s face turned red again, and she shouted angrily.
However, Ye Lian and the three girls exchanged glances and then all nodded in agreement.
Li Yalin licked her lips and looked at Ling Mo with a seductive gaze, saying, “Yeah, making love… it’s quite fun.”
Luo Ni and Wu Pengfei were first taken aback, then both turned their gazes to Ling Mo.
But their expressions conveyed completely different meanings.
Wu Pengfei looked at Ling Mo with envy and jealousy, giving him a discreet thumbs-up. “You’re amazing.”
Luo Ni, on the other hand, widened her eyes and instinctively covered her buttocks. “You… you pervert!”
“Hey, I’m innocent.” Ling Mo rolled his eyes at them. He couldn’t control the unrestrained mouths of the female zombies…
About ten minutes later, when the group reached the Residential Compound, both Wu Pengfei and Luo Ni wore incredulous expressions.
“No way, you live here?”
Wu Pengfei looked around from the gate.
“The environment here is quite nice. Don’t be fooled by the old exterior; it’s pretty clean inside.”
Ling Mo glanced at them and explained.
“But… don’t most survivors live in basements or warehouses? There’s no security living here.” Luo Ni stared at Ling Mo with wide eyes. “In general, the more enclosed, the better, to keep the zombies out, right? But here… it’s open on all sides.”
As she spoke, she walked to the half-closed iron gate and gave it a push.
With a loud clang, the rusty gate swung askew, startling her.
“There’s not even a proper gate!”
Ling Mo looked at her and couldn’t help but laugh. “We’re survivors, not hamsters. Is it really that necessary? Anyway, I’ve never liked enclosed spaces. Do you really think thick walls can keep out zombies? That’s too naive. Even if there’s a gate here, a wall just over a meter high can’t stop people, let alone zombies.”
Leaving aside other zombies, those at Ye Lian’s level could easily smash down a wall.
Even if they couldn’t break through the walls, zombies could climb up through drainpipes and similar places.
Defending one spot is no different from seeking death. Instead of being trapped, it’s better to leave yourself plenty of escape routes.
That’s how Ling Mo thought, and that’s how he had acted from the beginning until now.
Luo Ni rolled her eyes skeptically.
Ling Mo didn’t bother to explain. There were always people who stubbornly believed that something they didn’t understand was made up by others.
Initially, Ling Mo was a bit worried that Black Silk might suddenly rush out and scare Wu Pengfei and Luo Ni silly. However, even after entering the building, there was no sign of Black Silk.
Ling Mo sensed around and could only ascertain that she was somewhere within the compound, but he couldn’t pinpoint her exact location.
“Maybe she’s fallen into a deep sleep again? That would mean she’s about to evolve… I’ll look for her after settling these two.”
With these thoughts, Ling Mo led Wu Pengfei and Luo Ni to the top floor.
Most of the rooms had been cleaned out, but several had been completely destroyed during the playful romps of the female zombies and Black Silk. They now looked like the aftermath of a typhoon, a scene too tragic to behold.
“These two rooms are okay. You can make do here for the night. The bedding is still clean. If you want to bathe, you can fetch water and heat it up,” Ling Mo introduced.
“The conditions are quite good, actually. Having water to bathe is a luxury,” Wu Pengfei said, pushing open the door and looking around with delight. “Ling Mo, you’re a bona fide wealthy man now.”
“Come on, once we get to the camp, I bet you’ll enjoy better treatment than I do,” Ling Mo said, arms crossed and leaning against the doorframe with a wry smile.
Wu Pengfei gave Ling Mo an odd look and said, “Don’t be modest. Even if we live better in the camp, we’ll always be under someone else’s control. Unlike you, who lives so freely. And besides, no one in the camp can live like you, surrounded by beautiful women. You’ve got quite the luck.”
“You don’t understand my struggles…” Ling Mo muttered.
Wu Pengfei’s expression suddenly turned serious. “Brother, I don’t know why you don’t want to join the camp, and I won’t ask if you don’t want to say. But honestly, I also think that pond is too small for you. I know you; you’re not the type to compete with many fish for bait in a small pond. In that environment, you’d suffer.”
“Why do I feel slightly insulted…”
Wu Pengfei laughed and said, “Haha, that’s not what I mean. Mainly, you’re still young. Although you’ve gained a lot more life experience since your student days, you’re still somewhat inexperienced. Most importantly, you’re too sentimental. We’ve been apart for so long, but have you ever doubted my words? My dad often taught me that after being apart for a few days, you should look at someone with fresh eyes. He didn’t mean it the way it’s usually understood. He meant that once you’ve been separated for a while, you should reassess that person and not easily trust them again.”
Wu Pengfei let out a long sigh and continued, “But your sentimentality is the reason I consider you my only good friend. Even after I foolishly broke off contact with you, I always thought of you as my brother. Although we’re about the same age, we grew up in different environments. Especially my dad, he’s a shrewd businessman. I actually think a place like the camp suits me well.”
These words were the first time anyone had told Ling Mo something like this.
He wanted to argue, but in the end, he remained silent.
Indeed, this was his weakness. If he hadn’t gone looking for Ye Lian back then, he might now be a leader in some survivor team, living a life of power and comfort.
But that wasn’t the life Ling Mo wanted.
He’d rather endure hardship and exhaustion, even if it meant constantly navigating between zombies and humans, without any complaints.
In this regard, he was actually somewhat similar to Yuwen Xuan.
Both were committed to their inner pursuits, right or wrong, just seeking to be true to themselves.
Wu Pengfei, of course, didn’t know the complex emotions in Ling Mo’s heart. He smiled slightly, limped over, and patted Ling Mo’s shoulder, “Ling Mo, if… no, there’s no ‘if’! You’ve created opportunities for me, and I will strive to secure a place in this pond! When that time comes, half of everything I can get from this pond will be yours! Don’t refuse… without you, I’d either be dead or still living like a dog, without such good opportunities and conditions.”
After he finished speaking, he looked deeply at Ling Mo, his gaze incredibly sincere…
Two minutes later, both of them shivered simultaneously.
“How disgusting…”
“Yeah, really creepy…”
