Chapter 357 – I’ll Gladly Accept Your Sausage
“The evolution of the zombies has surpassed my imagination,” Ling Mo mused with a pensive frown.
Xia Na revealed a thoughtful expression, “Are you referring to the plight of that human just now?”
“Yes, that Leader Class Zombie has learned to differentiate between psychics and even tailors its approach based on their abilities,” Ling Mo said, his brow furrowed in concern. “I suspect this zombie might not just be at the Leader Class level but may have reached a realm we have yet to encounter.”
“Hmm… You’re right. War forces human advancement and also stimulates zombie evolution. But isn’t that a good thing? Understanding the next realm in advance gives us a proper direction for our own evolution. We can’t just be thrown into that kind of environment for training… though I wouldn’t mind,” Xia Na said with a chuckle.
Ling Mo’s face immediately stiffened, “Don’t even think about it. Have I not made myself clear? I don’t see you all as Zombie Puppets. Evolution is important, but ultimately it’s about ensuring you can live safely. What’s the point if we lose sight of that? However… intelligence is one aspect, but what also worries me is the change in their hunting patterns.”
Xia Na nodded in agreement at Ling Mo’s words, “It’s about that human… the chubby one…”
“I’ve known for a while that advanced zombies have developed habits of venturing out to hunt and store food. But remember, the ‘stored food’ we found at the University of City X were all dead. Now, some zombies have learned to keep their prey alive. Just thinking about that terrifies me.”
Ling Mo suddenly took a deep breath and spoke in a low voice, “In the future… humans won’t become livestock, will they?”
With that, he looked up at the sky. Gazing through the gaps between buildings, the winter sky seemed as grey and dismal as the prospects for humanity.
It was only at that moment that Ling Mo realized, no matter what, his consciousness still belonged to humanity.
As long as that didn’t change, he couldn’t completely disregard the fate of humans.
“Let me offer a friendly reminder, your conversation partner is also a zombie,” Xia Na sighed, then slowly extended her hand and placed her small hand in Ling Mo’s palm, “Luckily, I have human memories and emotions, so I understand you. I’ve been through these kinds of headaches myself. But overthinking these insoluble problems will just make your head explode, potentially leading to a breakdown.”
“The best solution is not to think about it. Just do what feels right in your heart. Young people should be creating life, not getting tangled up in these worries…”
“You’re right,” Ling Mo nodded, laughing at himself, “And perhaps I’m being too extreme. Even if zombies want to treat humans as livestock, humans are not without the means to fight back. At least for now, humans have been able to establish an Isolation Zone like this, even with zombies besieging the cities.”
Xia Na, having resolved her dual personality issue, had become so composed that now Ling Mo found himself needing her guidance with his psychological troubles.
“Ugh, just a mere human, and yet he dares to lash out at me… But why can’t I bring myself to attack him? It must have something to do with this weird creature, right?”
Yu Shiran followed from a distance, eyeing Ling Mo’s retreating figure with gritted teeth, thinking to herself: “I wanted to run away, but my body won’t listen to me… And this creature keeps draining fluids from me! It’s left me feeling so weak and limp…”
She touched the Black Silk around her neck and wrinkled her nose: “Whatever, it’s too confusing. Ban Yue will come looking for me, and then I’ll be saved. When that time comes… humph, human, you wanted me to follow you, right? For the taste of delicious sausages, I’ll bear it for now. But once Ban Yue comes to my rescue, I won’t hesitate to take your sausage.”
“Sss!”
Ling Mo suddenly shivered.
Xia Na quickly gripped Ling Mo’s hand, asking with concern, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, just the wind, I guess…”
When they approached the location where Yuwen Xuan and the others were, there was no need for Ling Mo to say anything; Black Silk and Yu Shiran had already vanished without a trace.
However, through a faint psychic link, he could still sense their approximate location.
This way, there was no need to worry about being discovered by Yuwen Xuan…
“Yo, you’re back!” Yuwen Xuan greeted him excitedly, while casting a glance at the maid girl, “Eh? She seems different from before.”
Ling Mo’s heart skipped a beat. Could it be that Yuwen Xuan had been playing dumb all along, actually able to tell that the soul inside had completely changed?
Yuwen Xuan leaned in mysteriously close to Ling Mo, whispering, “Come on, tell me, did you take five minutes just now for a quickie? That’s not right, you know, your main cultivation target is Yalin. Isn’t it unfair to her to waste your seed and energy like this?”
“How can you say such things about your cousin?” Ling Mo breathed a sigh of relief, realizing this guy had gotten the wrong idea…
After a moment’s thought, he couldn’t help asking, “But on what basis do you say that?”
“Heh heh…” Hearing Yuwen Xuan chuckle like that, Ling Mo felt goosebumps, “It’s simple, didn’t you notice her walking posture is slightly odd?”
“Odd my foot, that’s because she’s under my control, if she could walk with the poise of a girl, that would be the real shock!”
Ling Mo looked at Yuwen Xuan with disdain.
“Almost forgot the serious matter. What did you guys see?” Yuwen Xuan asked with curiosity.
Xia Na happened to walk by them and casually said, “Just two patrol members having a tryst in the field.”
“Wow!” Yuwen Xuan immediately showed an extremely excited expression, mainly because of Xia Na’s deadpan delivery, it was hard to tell she was joking.
Even Wu Pengfei and Ronnie took it for truth, one of them eagerly leaned in to listen more, while the other quickly kept her distance.
“But…” Yuwen Xuan suddenly furrowed his brow oddly, “I remember the patrol members on this defense line… are all men.”
He turned to Xia Na with a questioning look but saw a sureness on her innocent face.
Yuwen Xuan’s body trembled. After being stunned for quite a while, he suddenly beat his chest and stamped his feet, saying, “Has the long-term defense caused too much mental pressure, and the monotonous life led to such profound loneliness and emptiness? Have the soldiers become so desperately hungry that they do not even spare their comrades? I had no idea about this at all. I’ve been so negligent… They must be very disappointed in me.”
“Mmm, by the time you said these words, they had already lost hope in you.”
Ling Mo thought that there were still two Leader Class Zombies that might have infiltrated the camp, and his experimental subjects were still in the Isolation Zone, yet a body had already been hastily buried under the rubble.
Although no problem could be identified at a glance, it was impossible that no one had noticed. Time was pressing, and he couldn’t afford any more delays.
“Yuwen, lead the way quickly. We must enter the quarantine zone today,” Ling Mo said with a serious expression.
“Alright, leave it to me.”
Having already experienced passing the first line of defense, the subsequent two lines only took some time to safely get through.
After crossing the third line, people could be seen moving about on the streets.
The atmosphere here was completely different from other areas, and it was far from the zombie zone.
Some people were pushing carts, cleaning up the rubble, while children were chasing each other and playing on the open streets. It looked like a completely different world from the outside.
“This is still the outer area, and since many of the able-bodied have been sent to City X to serve as reinforcements, the population here is about ninety percent less than usual,” Yuwen Xuan explained.
Due to the sparse population and occasional patrols by soldiers, everyone remained vigilant.
After passing through several streets and entering the downtown area, the streets looked even cleaner.
Most of the rubble here had been cleared away, and aside from the silence, it was hard to tell the difference from the cityscapes of the past.
By the time they reached this area, Yuwen Xuan became more relaxed and seemed no longer worried about being discovered.
