Chapter 370 – A Pinch of Revelation
“Does it strike you as odd?” Ban Yue replied with a question of her own.
She let her arms fall to her sides, and her chest bounced with the movement, like a pair of mischievous rabbits.
As she slowly approached, Ling Mo became instantly wary. Fortunately, she stopped a few meters away from him: “The fact that you could kill grandma means you’ve become much stronger. As prey, you pose quite a challenge for us.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment… Thank you,” Ling Mo responded.
“Do humans enjoy being praised, even by an enemy?” Ban Yue expressed a hint of confusion.
“Of course,” Ling Mo answered matter-of-factly. “Praise from an enemy tends to be more sincere. I too want to give you a genuine compliment. You have an impressive figure, and it has sparked quite a bit of inspiration in me.”
“Thank… Thank you.” Ban Yue felt oddly flattered and glanced at Ling Mo, “Back to your question… It wouldn’t be a problem for Shi Ran and me to join forces and fight grandma to a standstill. But grandma didn’t want to fight us because she needed our help.”
“Get to the point…”
“Hey, show a little enthusiasm, will you? This is the answer you wanted to know, why act like I’m forcing you to listen?” Ban Yue brushed aside the hair that fell over her eyes and sighed, “I… I was ready to fight to the death against her, but grandma taught me a lot. When she was human, she was a highly respected old professor,” she quickly added, “the upright kind! Not an eccentric professor!”
“I didn’t say anything…” Ling Mo shook his head helplessly, thinking that the old professor had indeed taught Ban Yue a great deal. She had changed a lot compared to before, not just in appearance but also in demeanor.
“Grandma used to say that humans appear weak, but they actually possess strong survival and destructive capabilities. Just look at what they’ve done to this world… It’s possible that even our existence is a result of environmental devastation…” Ban Yue continued. Ling Mo had noticed that she seemed to want to talk more with him. Although he didn’t know why, if it bought him time, he was happy to chat.
Hearing this, Ling Mo couldn’t help but interject: “This grandma must have been involved in environmental studies…”
“I don’t know. She remembered a lot, but most of it was about knowledge,” Ban Yue shook her head, “I’m not sure if what grandma said was right or wrong.”
After saying this, she looked at Ling Mo expectantly.
“Why are you looking at me?”
Ling Mo’s scalp tingled, wondering if she expected him to have the answers.
He was curious himself!
If someone actually had information about the source of the virus, Ling Mo would set out immediately to obtain it by any means necessary.
“You don’t know either… Now we’re in trouble. Grandma’s dead, and the deal she promised to take us to meet that eccentric professor can’t be fulfilled,” Ban Yue sighed in imitation of Ling Mo, “Otherwise, we might have learned the truth about the virus.”
“What?!” Ling Mo immediately stood up straight.
Ban Yue smiled, “You seem quite interested. Didn’t you just say you wanted to make a deal with me? Well, I can make a deal with you too… Aren’t you curious about being able to coexist peacefully with grandma and even getting my help with her?”
Ling Mo was stunned.
No wonder she had been chatting with him nonchalantly while slowly twisting the doorknob—she had this in mind all along.
From this, it was clear that Ban Yue had made significant improvements, especially in intelligence and… cup size. As for strength, Ling Mo felt that compared to the old lady zombie, Ban Yue still had a long way to go.
Still, she was a zombie after all, and even though she had grasped the concept of “trade,” she inadvertently revealed her hand in the conversation.
Moreover, Ling Mo had Yu Shiran up his sleeve.
From the moment Ling Mo’s sly smile appeared, this was no longer just a trade…
“Little Ban Yue, oh Little Ban Yue, you’re out of luck.”
Meanwhile, in the corridor on the fifth floor, Yuwen Xuan was slowly moving forward, his posture extremely strange.
Completely drained of strength, each step was excruciatingly painful at the heel, yet he couldn’t muster any energy throughout his body.
“I now know the feeling of a mermaid walking on land. That prince is such a fool, to forsake such a wonderful mermaid princess… The sacrifice I’ve made!”
Yuwen Xuan cursed in his heart, but he was shouting, “Ling Mo! Brother Ling!”
He had no idea that the old lady zombie had just appeared as part of a coordinated attack. Although he was baffled by the presence of zombies in the main base, his mind was a mess, preoccupied with Ling Mo’s disappearance.
However, Yuwen Xuan still kept his voice down. This place was now a crime scene, and he was alone. If he alarmed the soldiers, he was not far from eating a bullet.
Falcon Camp was not like the outside world—crimes had consequences, and the trial process was straightforward, with the accused only able to defend themselves.
Actually, having a trial now was already a step up…
Back when there were more people, some men couldn’t control themselves, leading to incidents where female survivors were humiliated.
Conflicts over extra supplies or food that led to bloodshed or even murder were not uncommon.
In such cases, the camp’s officers would usually resolve the issue with a single gunshot.
But that was back when Falcon Camp had just established the quarantine zone. In Yuwen Xuan’s eyes, those were dark and chaotic days. Now that City X had established a quarantine zone, it meant going through the process all over again.
Those wild survivors, especially the arrogant leaders of some teams, were not going to turn from wild dogs into honest men overnight.
“Maybe this incident isn’t all bad. At least it can serve as a wake-up call to the higher-ups, making them stay alert. In such an atmosphere, those new survivors thinking of causing trouble would think twice.”
Muttering to himself, Yuwen Xuan suddenly noticed a sliding door ahead. It had four big characters on it: No Admittance for Unauthorized Personnel.
If it weren’t for those four words, he might have just shouted and left, but seeing that sentence, he felt an itch in his heart…
“Let’s take a look inside. Maybe Ling Mo is in this unexpected place.”
As Yuwen Xuan pushed the door open, a sharp alarm immediately blared.
The soldiers at the mountain pass instantly looked up towards the hilltop, shouldering their guns and running up the winding road towards the building. One of them quickly pulled out a Communicator: “Report, the lab alarm is going off! Relay the message to Chief of Staff Su immediately!”
“Damn, why did the alarm go off all of a sudden?”
Ling Mo glanced up at the ceiling, then at Ban Yue, who was visibly angry: “Destroy all traces of the fight, take the old bastard’s body, and leave. I’ll wait for you at the highway entrance of City X. You know what will happen if you don’t show up, no need for me to say more.”
After walking away a few steps, Ling Mo turned back and, without a word, pinched something on Ban Yue’s chest: “Damn, it’s actually real…”
“Ah! I’ll kill you!”
As Ban Yue raged, Ling Mo had already swiftly made his escape.
His Mental Power had largely recovered, and with his physical strength barely spent, he quickly reached the door where the alarm was sounding.
After entering through the sliding door, he was confronted by a cold storage room, and Yuwen Xuan was sprawled over a black bag. Judging by the shape of the bag, it definitely contained a corpse.
“I always knew you were twisted, but isn’t this a bit too much? And why would there be an alarm here?!” Ling Mo yelled out.
Yuwen Xuan looked at Ling Mo in shock, then said excitedly: “You’re alright! That’s great! I wanted to ask where you went, but now’s not the time… Help me, this is the experimental subject you wanted!”
“Even though what Ban Yue said has made the importance of the experimental subjects decrease significantly, we can at least use this to verify the accuracy of her claims.”
With intelligence reaching this level, whether the attribute of “incapable of lying” still applies to Ban Yue and the old lady remains to be seen.
“Then let’s hurry, I estimate we have at most two minutes!”
Ling Mo hurried over to help carry the body and support Yuwen Xuan, rushing down the stairs in a frenzy.
At times like this, even taking the elevator felt too slow.
