Chapter 375 – Covering the Retreat
Ling Mo and his companions had not been gone long from the alleyway when Su Qianrou had already arrived with her team.
Upon seeing Zhu Xuejun’s body on the ground, Li Wei let out a sharp scream, panic-stricken, she covered her eyes.
But Su Qianrou walked over to the corpse without hesitation, sighed, and said, “He’s indeed dead.”
“Chief of Staff, what are you doing? We should leave this to the medics…” came Li Wei’s trembling voice from behind.
“I’m not dissecting him…” Su Qianrou responded without turning her head.
“Don’t just talk about dissection…” Hearing the word “dissection” near a corpse could set off a vivid imagination, and that was the case for Li Wei.
Her face turned pale in an instant, and the soldiers behind her also diverted their gaze, looking somewhat uncomfortable.
“Shush,” Su Qianrou said calmly, crouching down to examine Zhu Xuejun’s body closely, “There’s a hole in his forehead, definitely not caused by a bullet. Could it be a zombie’s finger?”
Su Qianrou pointed a finger at the hole, mimicking the action but thankfully did not actually insert her finger to confirm.
“Anyway, his head’s been blown open. Judging by the frozen expression of terror on his face, I’m more inclined to believe he was killed by zombies, otherwise, he wouldn’t be this terrified,” Su Qianrou stated, somewhat mockingly glancing at Zhu Xuejun’s wet trousers, “Seems like the former Deputy Leaders of the intelligence group didn’t die very dignified deaths.”
“Alright, moving on…” Su Qianrou pulled a pair of white silk gloves from her pocket, put them on, and then took out a small flashlight, “Let’s go after the attacker. Form groups of three, do not separate, and if you encounter any trouble, fire your gun as a signal, and the others will immediately come to support. Understood?”
“Understood!”
After watching the soldiers salute and leave, Su Qianrou caught Li Wei, who was trying to sneak away, and asked without expression, “Where do you think you’re going? Souvenirs should always be carried with you, have some common sense.”
“Common sense is, humans aren’t objects…” Li Wei said pitifully.
Unfortunately, her expression couldn’t move Su Qianrou.
By this time, Su Qianrou had already stepped out of the alley and after a quick look around, she suddenly focused her attention on the green belt by the roadside.
She walked over, picked up an inconspicuous broken piece of grass from the edge, and carefully examined it: “Eighty percent chance they went this way. It’s a high probability, let’s follow.”
Saying this, she had already plunged into the gloomy and dark thicket.
“Hey…” Li Wei stood outside alone, nervously and fearfully looking ahead. After a two-second internal struggle, she ultimately took out a small capsule from her pocket and gave it a light twist.
The capsule immediately emitted a dazzling white light, just like an LED lamp. Holding the glowing capsule, Li Wei steeled herself and followed into the thicket.
“We should be close now.”
On a deserted side street, Ling Mo and his group were sprinting forward along the curb. Yuwen Xuan led the way, checking the surroundings and looking back with a grin.
“Right, once we’re gone, you should head back. With your knack for smooth-talking, I bet you’ll breeze through this situation,” Ling Mo said.
“Of course,” Yuwen Xuan chuckled, but as he turned his head, his expression gradually grew solemn, his eyes tinged with melancholy…
“Wait, someone’s coming from behind. Pursuers?”
Ling Mo’s pace slowed as he spoke. He employed his psychic detection periodically to scan the area in all directions, and at that moment, he had detected followers.
To his surprise, there were only two of them: one lagging behind in circles, the other with a clear direction.
This odd situation led Ling Mo to suspect that at least one of the pursuers must be quite capable.
Although it was unlikely that these pursuers could take on five with just two, there was no need for the entire group to stay behind because of them.
Ambush could be an option, but failure to secure a quick kill would endanger the whole group.
With the pursuers closing in, Ling Mo had little time to ponder. He handed over the experimental subjects to Yuwen Xuan: “Take them and leave. I’ll draw them away and then meet up with you. Don’t look at me like that; I’m not going to my death. Trust me, it’s easy for me to escape alone.”
“Do you… Do you need our help?” Ye Lian asked, worried.
“We’ll wait for you,” Xia Na said, grabbing Ye Lian’s arm and nodding.
As he watched Ye Lian and the others disappear around the corner, Ling Mo immediately issued a warning to Black Silk.
Many in the camp knew the appearances of Ye Lian and her companions. Allowing any of them to stay and help could risk exposing their identities.
Ling Mo had left too many clues behind. A careful analysis by someone determined could easily lead to conclusions detrimental to the group’s safety.
So Ling Mo’s thought process was simple and straightforward: he could not let Ye Lian and the others fall into danger, not even the slightest possibility could be taken lightly.
Even if they all managed to escape, leaving behind any leverage could potentially implicate many others.
At least those two survivors who had been introduced into the camp by him were not likely to have good days ahead.
In that instant, these were the considerations that crossed Ling Mo’s mind before he made his decision.
But the situation was different for the Loli Zombie currently attached to Yu Shiran; she was an unfamiliar face.
With the Loli Zombie by his side to hold off the pursuers, it shouldn’t be difficult.
“I actually want to see who’s so skilled at tracking…” Ling Mo glanced back and then melted into the darkness.
Soon after, Su Qianrou emerged from an alley.
Facing the empty street, her expression was one of excitement.
Su Qianrou had reached the fringes of the city district, where, aside from some dilapidated storefronts, the most common establishments were various massage parlors.
“Water stains…”
She stopped at a certain point on the sidewalk. The imitation granite tiles that paved the walkway were mostly chipped and broken, many of which would tilt and splash standing water when stepped on.
Yet such traces, even on a foggy night like this, were hard to notice even with a flashlight. But Su Qianrou’s keen observational skills were frighteningly sharp.
Around one of the tiles, she discovered some water stains: “As I thought, they’ve come this way, huh? I bet the defenses are weakest here today…”
As she spoke, she took out her Communicator.
However, just as she was about to dial, a slight noise suddenly came from behind her.
Su Qianrou immediately turned around, her gaze falling on the stores across the street.
A Chengren Supplies Store, a massage parlor. Peering through the cracks of the doors, all she could see were dark shadows.
But her intuition told her that a pair of eyes was watching her.
Her eyes darted between the Chengren Supplies Store and the massage parlor, finally settling on the slightly ajar door of the latter.
The door was trembling ever so slightly, whether from someone’s recent touch or the night breeze, she couldn’t tell.
“Trying to lure me over?” Su Qianrou stood her ground.
But a few seconds later, a flash of red that suddenly streaked across the second floor tightened her nerves instantly.
“Zombies, indeed!”
She raised her gun and, as she burst into the massage parlor, pulled the trigger.
What Su Qianrou hadn’t expected was the sudden pain in her wrist at the moment she was about to fire, causing her handgun to drop to the ground.
As her gaze shifted to the floor, the gun moved forward as if it had grown legs, disappearing into the shadows.
“What is this…”
A sense of foreboding hit Su Qianrou, but the moment she turned around, the door slammed shut.
Inside, darkness enveloped her, leaving only the small flashlight in her hand.
But even this flashlight was knocked to the ground, emitting a dull thud.
Before Su Qianrou could run towards the door, a red light suddenly approached her, and a wave of dizziness hit her brain, robbing her of the ability to resist.
