Chapter 426 – The Smile in Memory
Lucy pressed herself tightly against the shadows, watching from above.
The moment the short man, nicknamed Rat, appeared not far away, her nerves immediately tensed.
But her breathing remained calm, and her body didn’t move an inch.
Rat, moving swiftly, looked very cautious. To ambush him, she needed to be patient.
Lucy slowly raised her gun. She was a superhuman with an enhancement ability focused on body enhancement, but this ability hadn’t granted her any special powers. It could be considered a rather useless superpower. All it did was enhance her body to the strength of a special forces soldier.
The enhanced physical strength allowed her to handle a machine gun, but all other skills, including shooting accuracy and combat experience, were honed through her own efforts.
However, stealth and ambush were Lucy’s weak points.
She was a fiery woman who could wield a machine gun, but not a good stalker.
And Rat was clearly an expert in this field.
Would she be discovered and lose the advantage, or would Rat be silently taken down in his advance?
There was only one chance for confrontation…
“Let’s see if I’m really as good as I think I am this time…”
Lucy’s finger slowly moved to the trigger.
Suddenly, an image of Ye Lian’s shy smile, as she was being held by Ling Mo, flashed before her eyes…
“I can’t remember the last time I smiled like that…”
Ling Mo’s voice echoed in Lucy’s ears, “Lulu… that unreliable jerk, he was just teasing, but he accidentally called out my real name…”
“Ah! Help me!”
At the moment the Cataclysm erupted, Lucy had rushed indoors in terror, gripping the doorknob tightly.
The door banged loudly, and through the constantly widening crack, Lucy saw many familiar faces.
Family and neighbors…
But their faces bore expressions that were utterly unfamiliar to her.
Their mouths were stained with blood, and their fingernails were filled with bits of flesh. The sound of their scratching on the door was enough to make her teeth ache.
“What’s wrong with you… what do you want to do? I’m Lulu, I’m Lulu!”
Tears streaming down her face, Lucy stared blankly at them. She couldn’t even remember how she had pulled out a kitchen knife, severed the hands reaching through, and escaped by climbing out the window…
Those memories grew blurrier day by day in her struggle for survival.
Since that day, Lucy hadn’t smiled.
Some people saw the Cataclysm as an opportunity, but others viewed those memories as a source of pain.
“Is the world really simpler now…”
Lucy watched Rat inch closer, pondering…
Closer!
As the distance between them narrowed, Lucy raised her gun bit by bit.
Now!
“Bang!”
The gunshot rang out, and Rat’s body jerked. He immediately turned and retreated to a corner of the wall.
He wiped his hand under his ribs and looked at the blood covering his palm, “So close… Someone actually ambushed me. Weren’t they supposed to be surrounded by zombies…”
Rat cautiously peeked out and took out his walkie-talkie, “Tiger, something’s wrong. I was ambushed over here. Be careful on your end…”
He glanced towards the rooftop and then dashed forward, leaping up the wall.
But when he reached the spot where Lucy had been standing, it was already empty.
“Hmph, trying to run after wounding me?”
Rat looked around and his eyes settled on the edge of the rooftop.
There, on the rusted railing, was a fresh scratch mark.
“When I find you, I’ll kill you slowly! Must be weak if you ran after just one attack.”
A cold smile appeared at the corner of Rat’s mouth. He pushed off the railing and flipped over it.
The moment he landed, someone suddenly climbed up from the other side of the rooftop.
With only one hand still usable, Lucy relied on brute strength to cling onto the edge of the roof, hanging precariously. She held the gun in her mouth.
“This world may never be as simple as I want it to be, but as long as I can live well for myself, I will keep fighting.” Lucy quickly rushed to the side where Rat had leaped down. “Otherwise, what is the point of surviving all this pain? Isn’t it just to be as happy as Ling Mo’s girlfriends…”
The moment her gun was aimed at Rat from behind, Lucy’s eyes turned icy cold.
But a slight smile appeared on her lips.
As the wind howled and the gunshot rang out, Lucy looked stunning in that moment…
“No matter when, I’ve never been a useless person. See that, Ling Mo.”
When the gunshot ended Rat’s life, Quinn was holding a walkie-talkie in front of Ling Mo, her expression grim.
The gunshot was particularly clear through the walkie-talkie.
“There are only six of you, and you still had the manpower to ambush us. Using the tall and thin figure as bait to draw our attention and disrupt our plans, what a clever strategy…”
Quinn clenched the walkie-talkie, speaking coldly.
“Do we need to strategize against you? The current situation is entirely your own doing, don’t pin it on me…”
Ling Mo pinched the bridge of his nose and said.
“Stop making excuses!” shouted the tattooed man.
Around them, a dozen zombies lay on the ground.
These were Ling Mo’s zombie puppets, but eliminating them had cost Quinn and the tattooed man dearly.
Both of them looked somewhat pale, filled with apprehension towards this seemingly indifferent young man.
A few minutes ago, when the first zombie appeared nearby, Quinn and the tattooed man’s nightmare began.
That zombie had emerged from an alley, almost passing right by them.
After a sharp turn, the zombie, with its blood-red eyes, twisted its head to look at them.
“Oh! A zombie!”
The tattooed man said, cracking his knuckles, “Just in time for a warm-up!”
But as soon as he spoke, he saw the zombie suddenly increase its speed and run away.
“No way! Since when do zombies run away!”
The tattooed man was taken aback, but that was just the beginning. A few seconds later, the zombie returned.
This time, the zombie held a wooden stick, and several other zombies carrying sticks followed behind it.
Not only that, zombies with similar appearances were surrounding them from all sides.
They cautiously encircled Quinn and the tattooed man, slowly closing in.
“Hey, Quinn, have you ever seen anything like this…” the tattooed man asked, swallowing hard.
Quinn glanced around and drew a knife from her waist, “No. This is the first time I’ve seen zombies form a gang to beat someone up. Have they started a zombie gang or something?”
“Don’t do things that defy common sense, my heart can’t take it!” the tattooed man said, his face pale.
As the lead zombie suddenly raised its arm and swung it forward, the dozen or so zombies immediately swarmed them…
“Damn, I almost got beaten to death by a bunch of zombies…”
The tattooed man shivered uncontrollably, and the abrupt gunshot over the walkie-talkie shattered his composure.
“Rat! Rat!”
“Damn it, Rat is dead! This bastard can control zombies like that!”
After finally dealing with the stick-wielding zombies, Ling Mo appeared again, launching several tentacle attacks that injured both him and Quinn.
The tattooed man couldn’t believe this was a coincidence.
“Could it be an ability like Yan Shang Feng’s? But no matter how he’s controlling the zombies, he’s alone now. There are no zombies nearby.” The tattooed man glared at Ling Mo, panting heavily. “A mental ability superhuman is useless if their ability can’t be used…”
“Then go ahead and attack…” Quinn’s hand holding the walkie-talkie trembled continuously, and a bloody, gaping wound on her wrist looked particularly gruesome.
“I’m just getting ready…” the tattooed man said, stepping back instead of forward.
The two exchanged glances and suddenly turned to run down an alley.
If they could regroup with the others, they might still have a chance!
Ling Mo stood still, hands in his pockets, looking not very threatening.
The two of them dashed away, disappearing from sight, leaving Ling Mo standing alone on the deserted street.
“Hey, you ran away just like that! At least put up a fight first!”
