Chapter 45 – The Unluckiest Zombie in History
The brutal clash between the zombies ended quickly, but the ultimate victor wasn’t the middle-aged female zombie; instead, it was a frail-looking male zombie.
It seemed that physical strength didn’t matter much after becoming a zombie. The middle-aged female zombie was undoubtedly the brute-force type, but after being besieged by several zombies, her strength gradually waned. Despite showing no intention of retreating, her attacks lost their power. On the other hand, the frail male zombie had been inconspicuous, not even getting close to the middle-aged female zombie. Yet, with his agility, he managed to outlast the others and emerge victorious.
A dozen dismembered zombie corpses lay at his feet. The male zombie didn’t hesitate and squatted down to start feasting.
Though the process was revolting, Ling Mo forced himself to watch closely, determined to understand how zombies evolve and mutate.
At first, there was nothing unusual. He drank blood and ate flesh like any other zombie… But after gnawing on the middle-aged female zombie’s head, he suddenly began to writhe on the ground frantically.
“What’s going on?”
It was nighttime, and the light was poor. The distance was also significant. Although Ling Mo’s Psychic Power allowed him to hear distant sounds and see better in low light, observing the male zombie’s every move from afar was still challenging.
Fortunately, the zombie soon returned to normal. However, after standing up, he showed no further interest in the other corpses.
Is he full? Ling Mo wondered as he stared intently at the zombie. He wanted to immediately send Xia Na or Ye Lian to capture and study this zombie, but the zombie suddenly dashed off in a specific direction after getting up.
This was unusual behavior. Unless there was prey, zombies rarely showed such enthusiasm for running under the moonlight.
Ling Mo quickly looked in that direction. Although it was hard to see clearly, he could vaguely make out some dark figures…
“So, zombies have been attracted over there,” Ling Mo said with a cold smile.
Nighttime belonged entirely to the zombies. In this city, which had completely become a ghost town, such things might be happening everywhere. Zombie evolution was clearly more complex than what he had witnessed.
The zombie brawl had erupted in another corner of the square. Although Ling Mo couldn’t see it from his position, he was fortunate to have two Mutation Zombies with him.
Considering Xia Na’s instability, Ling Mo controlled Ye Lian to go downstairs and open the door. After locking it behind her, he turned and sprinted toward the battlefield.
Under the night sky, Ye Lian’s agile figure darted across the Square like an eerie shadow. She silently positioned herself under the eaves of a shop, observing the “battlefield” not far away.
This distance was the maximum limit of Ling Mo’s control, but with Ye Lian’s vision unaffected by the lack of light, she could clearly see everything happening there.
The male zombie was currently in a frenzy, swiftly taking down any zombies that appeared before him. He didn’t devour their entire bodies; instead, he specifically targeted their heads, more precisely, their hindbrains…
Through Ye Lian’s perspective, Ling Mo watched everything with a frown. It seemed that ordinary zombies also had lesions, or Virus Gel, in their hindbrains. However, Mutation Zombies like Ye Lian were no longer interested in the gel from ordinary zombies; she needed the gel from the brains of other Mutation Zombies.
Moreover, Ling Mo could see clearly that the male zombie wasn’t extracting the gel from their brains; he was stuffing their entire brains into his mouth.
This scene immediately reminded Ling Mo of the zombie corpses he had found on the bus when he first discovered Ye Lian. He hadn’t examined them closely at the time, but now, thinking back, those zombies’ brains had indeed been hollowed out, unlike Ye Lian’s method of only extracting the Virus Gel. This realization gave Ling Mo an odd feeling, but he quickly dismissed it.
So what if he eats brains! Ling Mo was determined to keep Ye Lian by his side. Besides, these zombies were no longer human…
The male zombie, after hollowing out the brains of the ordinary zombies, seemed unsatisfied and returned to extract the brains of the remaining corpses as well.
Even by zombie standards, he had eaten an enormous amount. Any more, and he might risk rupturing his stomach.
After finishing, the male zombie tilted his head back and let out a low roar. The sound wasn’t loud, but it sent a shiver down Ling Mo’s spine.
Was this zombie about to mutate? Despite the distance, Ling Mo could clearly see the red glow in the zombie’s eyes growing brighter. As the zombie roared, it seemed as though his bones were crackling and popping. Though it was just a sensation, Ling Mo felt as if he had truly seen it! The zombie’s body stretched, and the bloodthirsty gleam in his eyes intensified.
Mutation Zombie! Although this one was a bit weaker than the Mutation Zombies Ling Mo had encountered before, it was indeed a Mutation Zombie being born right before his eyes!
Ling Mo became excited immediately. He knew the bloody scent here would soon attract other zombies, so while the newly born Mutation Zombie was still growling, he controlled Ye Lian to rush behind it!
This “newborn” Mutation Zombie was no match for Ye Lian. It only sensed Ye Lian when she was already ten meters away, thanks to the unique sense of recognition among their kind…
But ten meters was nothing to Ye Lian. Just as the Mutation Zombie began to turn its head, Ye Lian had already reached him, delivering a swift and powerful chop to his neck.
A zombie’s weakness is similar to that of a normal human; non-lethal injuries won’t stop their attacks. With Ye Lian’s strike, the Mutation Zombie’s eyes rolled back, and it passed out.
This was probably the first zombie to be knocked out. Normally, humans would fight zombies to the death, and if they managed to get close, it wouldn’t be just to knock them out. And in zombie-versus-zombie battles, it’s kill or be killed! If a zombie got knocked out during such a fight, death would swiftly follow.
So, this newly born Mutation Zombie became the first in history to be knocked out by a fellow zombie and then dragged away.
Ye Lian’s slender frame had no trouble dragging this adult male zombie; she didn’t even break a sweat. With no zombies left in the shop below, Ling Mo dashed down to open the door for Ye Lian and then locked it behind them.
“Researching zombies, huh…”
Back upstairs, Ling Mo eagerly sat down in front of the knocked-out zombie, instinctively rubbing his hands together in anticipation.
