Chapter 49 – The Path to Heaven, You Refuse to Take
Wang Lin, who had turned back, had a look of triumph in her eyes. However, as she entered the alley, she signaled Li Yu and Wang Cheng to stop.
She cautiously peeked inside, but as soon as she stuck her head out, she let out a scream.
A blood-soaked zombie had silently lunged at her from the side, wielding an iron rod! The moment Wang Lin poked her head out, the iron rod swung horizontally with a “whoosh.”
Although it grazed her cheek and didn’t actually hurt her, Wang Lin was completely petrified!
She had never encountered a zombie that could conceal itself and then launch a sneak attack, much less one that used weapons…
Despite her fear, she managed to react instinctively. Her curved knife swiftly slashed downward, aiming for the zombie’s hand holding the iron rod.
According to the zombies’ unyielding nature, when Wang Lin slashed down, the zombie would surely raise its arms to continue the attack. This way, with the combined force, its hand would inevitably be severed.
This was the experience Wang Lin had summarized from her battles, and it had almost become a reflex when fighting zombies.
But to her utter surprise, the zombie stepped back, dodging her curved knife, and then swung the iron rod at her again!
What kind of zombie is this?!
Wang Lin’s eyes widened in shock, and Li Yu and Wang Cheng, who rushed forward upon sensing the commotion, were also taken aback.
Seeing the iron rod coming down, Wang Lin quickly dodged. Thanks to her excellent flexibility, she twisted her body to avoid the blow and simultaneously slashed her curved knife at the zombie’s iron rod.
“Clang!” The sound of metal striking metal rang out. As she hit the rod, Wang Lin twisted her wrist, turning the slash into a slice, directing her blade towards the zombie’s right hand gripping the rod.
Her movements were swift and precise, and her attack technique was spot on. In her eyes, this strike was bound to succeed.
Even Li Yu, who was about to charge forward, paused and silently praised Wang Lin’s knife skills.
But to everyone’s astonishment, while their attention was focused on this “peculiar” zombie, another zombie suddenly appeared behind Wang Cheng, who was at the tail end. It swiftly covered his mouth and dragged him aside.
Wang Lin’s strike did not miss. With a splash of blood, three of the zombie’s fingers were cleanly severed, and the iron rod clattered to the ground.
This kind of injury wouldn’t stop a zombie, and Wang Lin knew that well. After disarming the zombie, she took a step forward and swung her curved knife down again.
From her experience, zombies wouldn’t care about their injuries. As long as they could still move, their attacks wouldn’t stop. So, as Wang Lin’s knife swung down, the zombie should have been right under her blade…
But what happened next was beyond Wang Lin’s expectations!
After losing its weapon, the zombie suddenly turned and dashed into a nearby building!
It ran away! The zombie actually ran away!
Wang Lin’s expression turned to one of extreme shock, and behind her, Li Yu’s mouth hung open in disbelief!
A zombie that used tactics, wielded weapons, and even ran away… If they hadn’t seen its blood-red eyes and twisted face up close, they would never have believed it was a zombie.
Wang Lin, who had nearly been struck by this zombie, was now furious seeing it escape!
Are you even a zombie?! Do you have any sense of zombie behavior…
Wang Lin quickly snapped out of her shock, but just as she was about to give chase, Li Yu suddenly shouted, “Where’s Wang Cheng?!”
Wang Cheng was gone, vanishing right under their noses without a sound, and there wasn’t even a drop of fresh blood on the ground.
This unexpected situation darkened Wang Lin’s expression, and Li Yu’s eyes were filled with undisguised horror!
Wang Cheng had no combat abilities and had stayed close to them the whole way. The idea that he would run away on his own was unbelievable to both Li Yu and Wang Lin. But how could a living person just disappear right under their noses?
“It must be Ling Mo!” Wang Lin furrowed her brow deeply. “Maybe Wang Cheng discovered Ling Mo and slipped away to join him! That means Ling Mo is nearby.”
Wang Lin glanced at the surrounding buildings, feeling a bit uneasy. Who knew if that strange zombie was the only one around? What if they ran into another?
“How about we just forget about Wang Cheng and leave?” Li Yu suggested cautiously. “That zombie… it seemed to have some intelligence. It’s just too bizarre.”
Wang Lin’s mouth twitched slightly, but she still snorted disdainfully. “What are you afraid of? Couldn’t that zombie still be defeated by me? Maybe it’s just like a Mutation Zombie, just a bit different. Didn’t you see it had to run away? Besides, encountering such a special zombie means we should figure out what it’s about. That way, we can provide some intel to everyone back at camp and avoid any future losses.”
As she spoke, the shock in Wang Lin’s eyes gradually faded, replaced by excitement and eagerness.
Discovering a new type of zombie! Who would have thought that chasing a thief would lead to such an unexpected surprise? Although she had been somewhat panicked earlier, now that she thought about it, the zombie wasn’t that frightening. It had even run away from her. As for Wang Cheng… whether he ran off on his own or something happened to him, Wang Lin didn’t care. He was just a burden, a newcomer at that…
“That’s true… So, should we keep looking for the knife?” Li Yu asked again.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t we? But… we can’t let him have a chance to run away. You stay outside and keep watch!” Wang Lin ordered decisively.
As Wang Lin and Li Yu split up, Ling Mo, standing by the window on the second floor of a bar, revealed a satisfied smile.
Compete with me? Just a little girl, hardly an adult. Though she has some skills, her judgment is quite lacking. Just one Zombie Puppet is enough to distract her… This isn’t Song Tian’s camp, and Ling Mo had no qualms about using his abilities here. Besides, who would have guessed he could control zombies? As long as Ye Lian and Xia Na’s identities remained hidden, no one would suspect a thing.
Moreover, Ling Mo’s goal was to thoroughly deal with Wang Lin and find out exactly how she had been tracking him.
Having someone know his whereabouts and relentlessly pursue him had crossed Ling Mo’s bottom line.
Can’t we all just survive in peace? Why come looking for trouble with me? This is a classic case of ignoring the road to heaven and barging into the gates of hell…
Now, the more you entangle yourself, the worse it will be for you in the end!
Following the trail of blood left by the strange zombie, Wang Lin entered the building. Although Li Yu was quite frightened, he had no choice but to stay outside.
Personally, he thought they shouldn’t have come after Ling Mo and his group in the first place! But Wang Lin’s persistence had given him a headache. At least with her cousin Xia Na around, there shouldn’t be any major conflicts…
However, the appearance of that zombie had undoubtedly disrupted their plans! Originally, they were just looking for Ling Mo, but now they had to divert their attention to that zombie.
Great, now Wang Cheng has inexplicably disappeared, and the remaining two of them are forced to act separately…
When the whole alley was left with only him, Li Yu felt an inexplicable sense of foreboding.
He took a deep breath and gripped the iron rod in his hand tightly. Stay calm, even though that zombie might ambush, Wang Lin is already chasing it. There can’t be many of those zombies around; even if there are, being cautious should be enough. After all, in terms of combat ability, they aren’t much different from regular zombies, maybe even weaker. Regular zombies wouldn’t run away…
Encouraging himself with these thoughts, Li Yu felt a slight surge of courage. But just as he straightened his back, he suddenly heard a faint sound behind him.
