Chapter 570 – The Alpha Wolf
“Howl!”
A zombie suddenly leapt from the second floor, landing heavily on the ground with a loud thud, letting out a howl.
He shook his arms, his single eye crimson as blood, filled with a crazed intent to kill, scanning the surrounding zombies.
As his howling continued, the other zombies began to stir.
Suddenly, a zombie darted out from behind a wall, launching itself straight at him.
The One-Eyed Zombie reacted swiftly. He pivoted on the spot and leapt to meet the attacking zombie.
In an instant, the two zombies clashed, their strength colliding directly, muscles tearing, bones shattering. With every swing of their arms, blood and chunks of flesh flew everywhere.
Violence and gore were the survival anthem of the zombie kind.
“Thud!”
Ultimately, the One-Eyed Zombie seized the opportunity. With a swift and vicious claw, he plunged into his adversary’s abdomen, tearing out his innards with a snarl.
A bloody, gory hole opened up in the zombie’s belly. Yet, the zombie stubbornly remained standing, swaying unsteadily for a good ten seconds before collapsing with a wrenching howl.
As the zombie fell, the One-Eyed Zombie raised his blood-drenched arm, clutching a mass of fresh entrails, and let out a roar, “Howl!”
“Howl! Howl!”
The zombie horde responded with their own howls. The One-Eyed Zombie swung his arm forcefully, flinging the intestines into the throng.
This delicacy was immediately torn to shreds by countless upraised claws. After extracting the virus gel from the corpse’s hindbrain, the One-Eyed Zombie left the body to the ever-bloodthirsty zombies.
The sounds of gnawing and chewing filled the air immediately, occasionally punctuated by the cracking of bones and various other spine-chilling noises…
“Phew! No matter how many times I see it, these monsters are just… goddamn monsters!”
From a nearby small building, Mu Chen withdrew his gaze from the window’s slit, looking disgusted as he spoke.
Mu Chen glanced back at the others in the room: “Big Brother” and his three female companions, himself, Xu Shuhan, and Xia Zhi…
A wave of frustration surged through him. He was supposed to be an undercover agent, so how did he end up here with them?
How did things get so bizarre?
It’s so pathetic! Mu Chen sighed, realizing how unprofessional he was as an undercover agent…
“It’s different from before…” Ling Mo said, still standing by the window, observing.
“What’s different? The speed at which they eat or their actions?” Mu Chen asked with disgust. He had to admit he admired Ling Mo’s nerves for being able to watch so intently.
Little did Mu Chen know, the man in front of him had even performed dissections for virus research.
What’s more, he spent his days controlling zombies and was accompanied by several wild zombies and mutation beasts. No one understood zombie instincts and behaviors better than Ling Mo.
Watching so much had given him all sorts of immunity…
“Zombies, their behavior patterns have changed,” Ling Mo stated. “Previously, their fights were chaotic, driven purely by an instinct to evolve, an innate behavior. But now, they’re acting more like a wolf pack. A dominant wolf is born in an area, then challenges other similarly strong zombies to battle.”
Ling Mo was referring to what they’d just witnessed: “If the dominant wolf wins, the challenger becomes its nutrient, making it stronger. If it loses, it becomes the challenger’s nutrient, similarly leading to a stronger dominant wolf.”
“How’s that different?” asked Gu Shuangshuang, who had been standing quietly to the side, startling Mu Chen with her sudden interjection. He had completely overlooked her presence. Despite being a superhuman with mental abilities, her presence was surprisingly faint…
“It’s quite different. Although there’s still killing, it’s more disciplined and purposeful, reducing many unnecessary sacrifices,” Ling Mo replied. He then noticed Xu Shuhan had placed a microphone in front of him, looking very much like she was conducting an interview…
“Hey…” Ling Mo said helplessly.
“Don’t mind me,” Xu Shuhan calmly replied, nudging the microphone a little closer.
“Could you please not poke my face with it?” Ling Mo continued, feeling helpless.
Ling Mo glanced at Ye Lian and the three girls for support, only to find them excitedly crowded around a small window, keenly observing the scene outside.
If anyone else were watching them, they’d be stunned by their expressions.
That kind of excitement, longing—it was absolutely not what any normal human would show in such a situation…
Ling Mo thought about saying something but decided against it. He subtly shifted his position to completely block the sightline between the girls and the rest of the group.
Seeing their reactions, Ling Mo realized he might have been neglecting them a bit lately…
Although they seemed happy with him, they were still zombies. Even Xia Na, who possessed half of her human traits, couldn’t fully escape her zombie instincts.
Getting up close and personal with scenes of slaughter and bloodshed brought them a kind of soul-deep joy that being around humans simply couldn’t.
Despite how well they could restrain themselves, being with numerous humans still made them uncomfortable.
“I’ve been a bit selfish… Let’s wrap this up soon,” Ling Mo mentally reminded himself.
Hearing Ling Mo’s words, Mu Chen felt somewhat dismissive inside.
Niepan had known about this intelligence long before.
But it wasn’t wise to undermine Ling Mo’s pride directly, given he still needed Ling Mo for information.
However, an idea suddenly struck him. Clearing his throat, Mu Chen declared, “Actually, we’ve learned a bit about this ourselves…”
“What?” Ling Mo immediately snapped back to reality, asking.
“The changes in zombie groups aren’t just about discipline. It’s just that when we go out, we see zombies everywhere and feel like nothing has really changed, so we overlook those details,” Mu Chen said, seeing that Ling Mo was interested. Feeling somewhat smug, he thought, “Seems like what you know is limited after all!”
A small outfit like the F Team could only house a single Level 9 member—how could it compare to Niepan?
After all, he was a high-level executive of a branch, so it was time for Ling Mo to see the difference!
“There are so many zombies nearby; there must be a special mutation zombie, but it’s probably not here. When we move out in a bit, we should keep an eye out for it. Also, the leader of these zombies, besides accepting challenges, actually has the right to prioritize finding a mate and can also pacify internal conflicts within the group,” Mu Chen explained.
“Watch this…” Mu Chen said, signaling Xu Shuhan.
Xu Shuhan immediately drew her gun and, with incredible speed, aimed at two zombies on the edge of the group. She fired a shot that hit one of the zombies in the knee.
The zombie stumbled forward, crashing into the zombie in front of it.
The impact and the sight of fresh blood immediately set off the other zombie, causing it to turn and start biting the unfortunate one. In no time, an arm flew into the air, with half of the zombie’s body spraying blood everywhere, drenching the ground in crimson.
The surrounding zombies began to stir, and the One-Eyed Zombie also caught the scent of blood, turning its head to look.
Xu Shuhan quickly moved to the side, in case the One-Eyed Zombie noticed her, as zombies’ eyesight can be quite terrifying.
She dodged just in time. Although the One-Eyed Zombie glanced in her direction, it didn’t notice anything.
“Roar!”
With a roar, it jumped over and landed among the zombies, throwing them all aside.
The two zombies still entangled were dealt with swiftly; one was kicked into a wall, while the other was picked up and torn in half.
Blood and viscera showered the One-Eyed Zombie from head to toe, making it look even more horrifying.
After displaying such extreme violence, it tensed up and let out another furious roar.
The other zombies, which had been in a frenzy due to the blood, seemed to be stunned by this roar and instantly quieted down.
The scene became silent, and behind the window, the atmosphere suddenly turned eerie…
