Chapter 605 – Too Demeaning!
“Squeak!” The Zombie Infant snarled, baring its teeth.
Ling Mo chuckled, “Oh, you still won’t admit it? That zombie earlier was practically your dad, wasn’t it? Didn’t you get him killed?”
“Squeak~!” The Zombie Infant had probably never seen such a fearless human before, daring to stroll leisurely in front of it while babbling incessantly.
It let out piercing shrieks while stretching out its short legs, trying to kick Ling Mo.
But Xia Na simply raised an arm, and the little zombie’s attack completely missed.
Size is a definite disadvantage!
“How are we supposed to use it to find more?” Xia Na glanced at the little zombie and asked.
“Look around…” Ling Mo didn’t answer directly; instead, he surveyed the surroundings.
In the darkness, several faint red dots appeared. No need to guess, they were all zombies.
“Judging by that previous zombie’s actions, I think it wasn’t trying to attack you but rather to reclaim this little zombie. Do you remember the Zombie Infants we saw in A City?” Ling Mo whispered as he cautiously moved closer to Ye Lian and the others.
Li Yalin immediately nodded with excitement, “Yes!” She said nostalgically, “The flying baby!”
“…That’s one way to put it. Zombie Infants are treated as ‘warriors,’ but they are also fiercely protected, right?” Ling Mo continued. “This applies here too. This Zombie Infant hunts but is also shielded by other zombies in the group. Look at Xiao Bai—it was attacked, but the assailant wasn’t just this Zombie Infant. The larger zombies coordinate with the Zombie Infants during hunts, much like wild beasts take their young to hunt.”
“Now that we’ve taken it hostage, it’s like we’re carrying a beacon,” Ling Mo explained as simply as possible.
Xia Na understood. Li Yalin and Ye Lian might not fully grasp it, so Ling Mo often used straightforward analogies.
The results prove these methods to be quite effective.
“Are you saying, Ling-Ge, that more zombies will come to attack us?” Xia Na asked.
“Yes. No matter where Yu Shiran is, this commotion will draw her attention,” Ling Mo replied, confidently smiling.
Ye Lian tilted her head and asked in confusion, “Why?”
“Because…” Ling Mo’s smile quickly turned into a gritted-teeth expression, and Ye Lian and the others noticed that this human was making his knuckles click loudly. “She wouldn’t miss an opportunity like this. We might end up in a standoff with these zombies.”
“Hehehe…”
Ye Lian stared blankly at Ling Mo, then gently tugged on Xia Na’s sleeve. “Nana…”
“I know.” Xia Na nodded seriously. “You’re right. This is the special kind of human described in the book.”
“A lunatic,” Li Yalin chimed in.
The three female zombies looked at each other and shared a slight smile.
“Hey, what are you all smiling about?” Ling Mo asked, snapping back to reality.
“Nothing… just learning something new,” Xia Na quickly answered.
“Oh, that’s good. Keep learning,” Ling Mo remarked casually and then waved his hand. “This way, let’s head toward the Underground Mall. If these zombies follow, even if Yu Shiran doesn’t notice, Black Silk will sense something is off.”
“Why go to the Underground Mall? Aren’t we going back to join the humans?” Li Yalin asked, puzzled.
“About that… I have other plans,” Ling Mo said with a slight smile.
…
Meanwhile, inside the Mobile Phone Mall, a trembling figure was holding a gun, nervously moving between the counters and posters.
“Mu Chen! Xia Zhi! Ling Mo!” Xu Shuhan called out with a shaky voice but got no response.
The mall was still shadowy, everywhere seeming to harbor figures, yet nothing was there.
Xu Shuhan struggled to control her inner fear, breathing rapidly. “Don’t be afraid… I’m not alone, I’m not alone…”
Clang!
“Ah!” Her heel suddenly bumped into an uninstalled aluminum strip, making a light sound.
Even this slight noise startled Xu Shuhan half to death. “Where are the others?!”
By now, she had slowly searched her way to the other side of the mall.
Through the gap between the floor-to-ceiling windows and the large poster, Xu Shuhan saw the zombies wandering outside.
They weren’t far from the mall, though not right up against it, and there were even more of them than before.
These monsters, normally terrifying and revolting, now brought Xu Shuhan a strange sense of comfort.
Even though she was in this dark and quiet place, the presence of zombies outside at least meant there wouldn’t be something suddenly jumping out at her inside…
“Whoa!”
A sudden shout from the side startled Xu Shuhan so much that she shivered, her heart leaping to her throat. Her gun immediately pointed in that direction.
“Ahhh!”
“Damn it, stop yelling!”
The person who had shouted was also startled. He jumped over and grabbed the barrel of her gun, his fingers slipping onto the trigger, while his other hand covered Xu Shuhan’s mouth.
Xu Shuhan’s eyes widened, and after a second of silence, she finally calmed down.
“Mm mm…?”
“Yes, it’s me! You’re way too jumpy…” Mu Chen looked at Xu Shuhan with a complicated expression, then glanced outside over her shoulder.
Thankfully, the soundproofing here was pretty good, and the zombies outside hadn’t heard anything.
“But why are you alone? Where’s Xia Zhi? And… and Ling Mo and his girlfriends?” Mu Chen asked, his curiosity piqued.
Xu Shuhan’s eyes were still wide, and she didn’t answer.
“Oh oh… sorry, I was afraid you’d attract zombies…” Mu Chen quickly let go of her, somewhat embarrassed.
However, the next moment turned even more awkward…
Xu Shuhan’s dazed expression didn’t change. Her chest heaved twice, and just as Mu Chen was about to ask what was wrong, Xu Shuhan suddenly opened her mouth.
“Blergh~!”
She spat out a mouthful of clear water, wiping her mouth and tears while waving her hand in disgust. “You… stay away from me…”
“…” Mu Chen was stunned for a moment, then tears welled up in his eyes.
I just covered your mouth with my hand! Was it really necessary to vomit?!
Xu Shuhan vigorously wiped her mouth and cheeks with a handkerchief, but seeing the green stain on the handkerchief made her vomit again…
“Hey, enough already! You’re really hurting my self-esteem here!” Mu Chen shouted in pain, “If it were Ling Mo, you wouldn’t be vomiting, right?”
“Ling Mo doesn’t stink like you…”
“Aw, someone’s got a crush!”
“What crush?! Get away from me!”
“Your face is red, your face is red!”
“Get lost!”
As the two bickered, with one leaning against the wall and the other retching by the counter, neither of them noticed a silhouette slowly approaching from a distance.
“Zzzz… zzzz…”
The sound of something dragging grew closer, finally catching the attention of Mu Chen and Xu Shuhan.
“What’s that noise?” Xu Shuhan, already on edge, jumped up, raised her gun, and took cover against the wall in one swift motion.
Mu Chen quickly drew his knife, and a figure slowly emerged from behind a pillar.
“Xia Zhi?” Mu Chen recognized him immediately.
But then his jaw dropped…
Xia Zhi was dragging a corpse behind him.
Hearing Mu Chen’s shout, Xia Zhi looked up and waved at them.
“…Is it my imagination, or does Xia Zhi look like a serial killer in a horror movie right now?” Mu Chen waved back while muttering.
Xu Shuhan was stunned for a moment, then nodded.
As the corpse was dragged closer, Mu Chen’s composure shattered even more.
“Ahhh! That’s the zombie I was chasing! I wondered where it went; you found it!” Mu Chen exclaimed.
He had seen the shadow and chased after it alone, but kept losing sight of it until he eventually lost it for good.
After some gesturing, Xia Zhi’s situation was explained through Xu Shuhan’s “translation”: “He was attracted by moving posters, one after another, and then found this zombie in the emergency exit…”
“That’s strange. I thought this zombie was trying to ambush us. Why would it run to the emergency exit?” Mu Chen scratched his chin, utterly puzzled.
Xia Zhi and Xu Shuhan stared at the body and shook their heads in unison.
“Forget it. Where are Ling Mo and the others?” Mu Chen asked again.
Xu Shuhan slowly shook her head, indicating she didn’t know either.
“No way, they’re missing too?” Mu Chen’s eyes widened. “We need to find them quickly. If we lose them, Ai Feng will definitely use this as an excuse to give me trouble!”
