Chapter 619 – The Dominant of the City
Nightfall arrived swiftly.
After a brief rest in a shop, Ling Mo urged everyone to hit the road.
On the surface, Mu Chen appeared calm, but inside he was already burning with anxiety.
As he walked out the door, his mind was in a complete mess, mirroring the unfolding events.
But suddenly, a light, floating voice transmitted into his ear.
“Wait for the signal.”
Mu Chen’s heart skipped a beat, and he instantaneously sobered up.
The figure that had just brushed past him… was Xia Zhi.
Could it be that their operation was also going to unfold tonight?
Mu Chen was momentarily taken aback and quickly turned his head to look at Xu Shuhan.
“In a bit, stay within five meters of me,” Xia Na was saying.
Xu Shuhan nodded, “Got it, it’s been like that these past few days.”
“But sometimes, your target becomes the Senior Sister,” Xia Na added.
“Yes, but isn’t that the same thing?” Xu Shuhan said, puzzled.
Xia Na hesitated for a moment, then smiled with a hint of meaning, “Trust me, it’s safer to stay with me.”
“Oh…” Xu Shuhan tugged at the corner of her mouth.
She didn’t really believe Xia Na’s words; judging by their usual combat performance, the Senior Sister seemed much more approachable…
Probably sensing Mu Chen’s gaze, Xu Shuhan glanced at Xia Na and then looked at Mu Chen.
The moment their eyes met, Xu Shuhan first froze and then nodded.
“Are we really planning to act tonight…” Mu Chen slightly furrowed his brows.
Nighttime would indeed provide excellent cover for an escape, but it was equally fraught with danger.
Were they really planning to risk everything?
But thinking it over, if they didn’t act tonight, they wouldn’t get another chance.
Ling Mo was still tolerating their delays because he wanted to collaborate with the Niepan branch in a relatively peaceful manner.
Once his patience ran out, things would spiral out of control in a direction they couldn’t reverse.
By then, they’d become mere bargaining chips between the two forces.
And what use is a bargaining chip?
So, it could only be tonight…
The moment Mu Chen stepped through the door, he suddenly felt his heart race.
Was it nerves? Excitement? Maybe a bit of both.
He hadn’t felt this in a long time.
It reminded him of when the disaster first broke out—like most people, he didn’t want to die but felt powerless to do anything about it.
Everything he had was destroyed in an instant. The despair and confusion he felt with the darkness that enveloped him were far more painful than the constant deaths occurring around him.
Yet, with every second he stayed alive, he felt it.
It made him feel alive; it made him understand the desire to survive.
That desire is deeply ingrained in most humans. Even if they lived like rats in the gutter, many would still struggle to survive.
Painful but fulfilling.
But at what point did surviving become so complicated?
Mu Chen’s eyes turned a bit melancholic…
Maybe back then it was just about staying alive, but now it was about not living in misery and pity.
“Let’s go.” Ling Mo’s voice came from ahead.
Mu Chen snapped out of his thoughts, “Oh…”
As he looked at Ling Mo’s back, he couldn’t help but wonder, what’s this guy struggling for…
The Dongming City at night was a completely different scene compared to the day.
During the day, Dongming was filled with dangers, but at night, it was like a carnival of monsters.
Shadowy figures, glimmers of red floating in the air, growling noises, chewing sounds, the fresh scent of blood in the air…
“Shh, keep it down.”
Leading the way, Mu Chen hid behind a lamppost and gestured for everyone to move quietly.
No sooner had he done this when Ling Mo’s voice came from the side, “Why do I feel like the zombies here are more active compared to other places? I mean at night.”
“Shush!!” Mu Chen was immediately horrified.
“Relax, the nearest one is at least twenty meters away in a straight line, with a wall in between.” Ling Mo said calmly. “But if you shush any louder, it’ll come over thinking you need to pee.”
“Your psychic power comes with distance measurement too?” Mu Chen asked suspiciously.
“I’ve trained. What did you think I was doing in the F Team?” Ling Mo nodded, “It’s not hard. You just need to find a suitable space for yourself first…”
“Stop, stop…” Mu Chen interrupted Ling Mo with an annoyed look, “Where do you see them being active?”
“Of course, there are signs.” Ling Mo nodded, “In other places, zombies become more sensitive and irritable at night but their basic behavior remains unchanged. But here…” Ling Mo pointed ahead, where fresh bloodstains, a few bones, and some scraps were still lying in the middle of the road, “Do you see that?”
“Y-Yes, I see it.” The Senior Sister stared straight at the bloodstains and nodded.
“Control yourself…” Ling Mo coughed and pulled the Senior Sister behind him, then continued, “Here, at night, it’s like a banquet. Senior Zombies go hunting, and weaker zombies get cleaned out.”
Mu Chen’s face looked a bit troubled, “You’re too sensitive…”
No sooner had he spoken when a muffled sound came from afar.
Ling Mo smiled slightly at Mu Chen, “Do you still think so?”
The sound was the same strange growl Ling Mo had heard during the day.
But now it was clearer and closer…
If Mu Chen and the others looked closely, they’d notice the three girls beside them were all staring in the same direction.
“We need to move quickly!” Mu Chen said, his face changing slightly.
“It’s too late,” Ling Mo shook his head.
Mu Chen was initially stunned, then followed Ling Mo’s gaze to the other end of the street.
“Thud, thud, thud!”
The muffled sound continued to ring closer and closer.
The ground seemed to be trembling slightly, and when Mu Chen looked up, he saw the streetlights above shaking.
He rapidly turned to Ling Mo and then looked at the bloodstains.
Was Ling Mo stalling him on purpose?
“Things really do come full circle…” Mu Chen gritted his teeth.
All his thoughts had been on the action and finding another route, but he’d forgotten about Ling Mo’s intentions and let him steal the advantage.
“Ling Mo, I don’t know why you’re so interested in zombies, but I have to tell you, we’re in trouble,” Mu Chen quickly said.
“When I asked, you should have told me,” Ling Mo remained calm, but his focused gaze made it clear that his psychic power was already concentrated.
Mu Chen was immediately rendered speechless and sullenly shut his mouth.
“This isn’t an ordinary zombie…” Xu Shuhan said, while slowly backing away.
Thud!
With a muffled sound, a dark shadow appeared at the corner of the other end of the street.
“Roar!”
The shadow suddenly raised its upper body and extended its neck, letting out a roar.
Ling Mo’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, his mouth dry, “What kind of…monster is this?”
“The dominant of Dongming,” Mu Chen said grimly.
Ling Mo had never seen a zombie like this before…
Even with the increasing number of variation zombies, this one stood out.
This was a male zombie, naked from the waist up, barefoot, wearing only tattered pants.
But his limbs were stronger and more powerful than any zombie Ling Mo had ever seen, with bulging muscles that appeared quite robust.
And those cold, blood-red eyes were staring intently at them, while thick lips slightly parted still dripping with fresh blood.
None of that mattered, though. The most striking feature was his height.
This was a giant zombie, standing around three meters tall…
Thud!
Another muffled sound followed from behind.
Mu Chen immediately turned his head, his already grim face growing darker, “There’s more…they’re moving as mates.”
Ling Mo turned as well, his expression turning equally grim.
At the other end of the street, another giant female zombie appeared.
Similarly muscular, with the same eyes… they were surrounded from the front and the back.
“Roar!”
The two zombies, one in front and one behind, roared simultaneously.
Their eyes instantly filled with excitement, and they almost simultaneously started to advance towards them.
“Get inside!” Ling Mo quickly shouted.
As the two zombies sprinted towards them, Ling Mo’s group turned and rushed into a high-rise building by the street.
