Chapter 624 – Devour of the Shadow
The corpse bomb descended from the sky, accompanied by a spray of blood, causing Ling Mo’s face to change dramatically.
He suddenly realized that his previous thoughts had fallen into some kind of misunderstanding… Perhaps there was still something inherent in the nature of these wild zombies, but their way of thinking was completely different from humans.
For example, this female giant zombie — her behavior was something no human could possibly comprehend!
“Isn’t that your mate?! Using him so thoroughly, really?!”
Not only did she tear off his arm to carry it away, but she also threw his body over!
And she threw it so skillfully, so meticulously!
Never mind what would happen if Ling Mo was hit by the huge body of the male giant zombie. Even if he managed to dodge the corpse, there was still so much blood gushing out from his severed arm!
If just a little bit of it splashed into Ling Mo’s eyes or mouth, he would be in big trouble.
This was a dominant-level zombie! Even Ling Mo dared not take any risks under such circumstances.
He quickly dodged to the side and immediately pulled up his clothes to cover his head.
The female giant zombie indeed wanted to escape, but she was simply outnumbered…
Although the corpse bomb she threw held Ling Mo back, there were still three other female zombies…
As Ling Mo dodged, he also used his psychic tentacle to spread a psychic net for them, providing them with cover while simultaneously pushing them towards the female giant zombie who was rushing to the window.
He was improvising, using another version of a “zombie bomb.”
The three female zombies descended from the sky and intercepted the female giant zombie in time. Missing an arm, without the help of the male giant zombie, and with Ling Mo joining in shortly thereafter, she quickly fell to a disadvantage.
A few minutes later, amidst the chaos, Ling Mo received two dominant-level zombie mother hives handed to him by Ye Lian.
Seeing these pure virus crystals and neural centers, Ling Mo’s eyes immediately became a bit heated.
All that sweat wasn’t in vain…
And perhaps due to the large size, these two mother hives were exceptionally large.
Compared to the dominant level mother hives Ling Mo had previously acquired, these two were at least one-third larger and appeared to be more pure.
It seemed that the virus was indeed the driving force for zombies, much like gasoline, and the mother hive was akin to the engine.
A larger, purer mother hive could support the operation of a bigger machine.
“Hold on…” Ling Mo smacked away Li Yalin’s sneaky hand, then placed the mother hives close to his body under the expectant gazes of the three female zombies.
“Not now,” Ling Mo said as he helped wipe the corner of Ye Lian’s mouth.
Ye Lian widened her eyes, moved her lips dumbly, then stuck out her tongue to lick them.
After putting away the items, Ling Mo wiped his sweat and turned his gaze towards the door of the Cafe…
There was still another matter waiting for him to deal with…
A few minutes ago, when Xu Shuhan was pointing her gun at Ye Lian, she couldn’t help but tremble all over.
It was probably because the fear from earlier hadn’t dissipated yet… Xu Shuhan thought to herself.
But the feeling of not being able to pull the trigger filled Xu Shuhan’s heart with complex emotions.
Her mission wasn’t actually complicated — to injure Ye Lian as much as possible to attract Ling Mo and the others’ attention… Ideally, to kill her.
However, looking at Ye Lian’s back, Xu Shuhan found herself unable to do it.
But it was an opportunity, and she had to take it…
“Ah!”
Xu Shuhan let out a sharp scream but ended up raising the gun abruptly and shooting at the chandelier.
However, when she lowered her head, a person was already standing in front of her — Ling Mo…
Even the unsuspecting Ye Lian, who had been facing away from her just a moment ago, was now in another corner.
At that moment, Xu Shuhan let out a long breath of relief, but also felt a chill sweep over her entire body.
…
“So you knew everything?” Mu Chen turned his head to look at Ling Mo, who was leaning against the doorframe.
“More or less,” Ling Mo touched his nose, “I figured you would try to escape. But your dramatic twists and turns were quite surprising. I assume you’re no longer thinking about running away now?”
“Life is already tough enough… Could you not be so sarcastic?!” Mu Chen replied with a dark expression and then looked at Xu Shuhan.
As their eyes met, both saw the word “frustration” in the other’s gaze.
One was exposed, and the other was used — both felt terrible at this moment.
In contrast, Ling Mo, who was at the center of it all, looked completely calm, without a hint of anger. This made Mu Chen and Xu Shuhan feel somewhat guilty, but thinking it over, they understood.
Perhaps Ling Mo didn’t take their antics seriously, which is why he was so indifferent…
But why did thinking this way make it even sadder? Mu Chen lamented in his heart.
He suddenly glanced at Xu Shuhan and asked, “But why did you hit me?”
“Xia Zhi told me to attack Ye Lian to distract Ling Mo so you could ambush him. I was just stopping you from doing something stupid,” Xu Shuhan said frankly.
“Alright… even though it hurt, I forgive you. But I’m still a bit confused. Why did you change your mind?” Mu Chen asked, still puzzled.
This was something he hadn’t anticipated at all. If Xu Shuhan had made a move, regardless of success or failure, they would all be doomed by now.
Xu Shuhan was silent for a moment, then shook her head. “I don’t know…”
“That’s Xia Zhi’s mistake then. He should’ve had you ambush Ling Mo directly,” Mu Chen suddenly looked at Ling Mo, saying, “That way, his plan would’ve succeeded completely.”
Xu Shuhan also looked up at Ling Mo for a moment, but then she lowered her head again.
“You…” Mu Chen was momentarily stunned, looked at Xu Shuhan in surprise, and then widened his eyes at Ling Mo.
“Um…” Ling Mo suddenly spoke, interrupting Mu Chen, “So what’s your plan now?”
As soon as he finished speaking, Ling Mo felt a brightness behind him.
He turned around, somewhat puzzled, looking out the window.
At that moment, his face turned grim.
“Your friend Xia Zhi is really ruthless…” Ling Mo said coldly.
Outside, flames were soaring into the sky!
“Bang!”
Xia Zhi threw a canister of oil from the rooftop, then looked around.
Under the night sky, many red dots could be clearly seen approaching.
The zombies racing towards the flames on the street might not possess the strength of those two dominant level ones, but their sheer numbers were enough to cause even greater trouble.
The scene, enough to make other survivors’ legs turn to jelly, instead brought a smile to Xia Zhi’s face.
The smile grew more evident on his face, brimming with sheer arrogance…
“You all probably thought I would run away, huh?” He suddenly grinned. “But I’m not as naive as you think…”
Muttering to himself, he looked down at his palm and clenched his fist tightly.
This feeling of having others’ fates in his grasp — it was exhilarating!
Who could have imagined that before the Cataclysm, he was just a man who bowed and scraped to his boss all day and then went home to face complaints and arguments?
When the Cataclysm broke out, he was initially scared, desperate, and filled with terror…
But as his superpower awakened, he felt that something had changed within him.
Perhaps… this was an opportunity — a chance to break free from that passionless, utterly boring life!
But this thought didn’t last long. Xia Zhi soon realized that compared to those around him, he was still too insignificant.
Just like before! No one cared about him; no one would give him a second glance on the streets; at his company, no one noticed his existence!
Xia Zhi had moments of madness, of frustration. But soon, he came up with a good plan.
Since no one noticed him, why not… hide himself completely!
While concealing himself, he used his disguise to get closer to those self-important fools who were entirely unguarded.
It was like being a shadow, ready for the day he would pounce and devour the person blocking his way!
“You all need someone in the background, right? But how does it feel to be pushed into the abyss by that background character?” Xia Zhi sneered.
However, merely controlling Xu Shuhan and Mu Chen and pushing them into the abyss wasn’t enough…
Xia Zhi moved his lips, murmuring another name: “Ling Mo.”
“Enjoy it,” he said, aiming his gun at a line on the ground.
“Whoosh!”
With a sharp whistling sound, a giant firework burst in the sky, illuminating most of the night sky in an instant.
