Chapter 627 – Don’t You Have Any Sympathy!
“How heartless,” Shen Le muttered, pursing his lips. He found a chair and sat down, then took something out of his bag.
Ai Feng glanced over, then quickly turned his head away in disgust.
In Shen Le’s hand was a bloody chunk of meat. He whistled and tossed the meat towards the door.
A shadow flickered in the darkness, and the meat disappeared mid-air, followed by the sound of chewing.
“Don’t tell me that meat is…” Ai Feng couldn’t help but ask.
“Heh, you probably guessed right,” Shen Le replied with a mischievous grin.
“Shit…” Ai Feng swore under his breath and looked at the man.
But before he could speak, the man interjected, “No, you can’t refuse this. You know one of my tasks this time is to showcase our latest achievement. Let me ask you, is there a better way to showcase it than in actual combat?”
“But the problem is that it’s still a prototype…” Ai Feng raised an objection.
“Ah, what prototype? It’s 80% complete,” the man said, crossing his arms and rubbing his chin, eyes gleaming. “And precisely because it’s not fully complete, it needs more real-world testing! If it reaches its full potential here, you’ll get some of the credit too! Ai Feng, you’ve been stuck at this level for a long time, haven’t you? Think carefully. If you keep going like this, sooner or later someone will replace you, and then you’ll be the one risking your life outside. I don’t know about you, but I’m never going back to that life.”
Ai Feng pressed his lips together and frowned, thinking for a moment. Suddenly, he asked, “What do you mean by ‘reaching its full potential here’?”
“We just need some data, and no matter how many times we run internal tests, the results are never accurate because we lack suitable experimental subjects! We need humans, capable superhumans! I think… anyone bold enough to set off fireworks at night must be quite powerful, even if they weren’t the one who injured No.0 last time.”
“This is a perfect experimental subject.” As he spoke, the man’s expression turned confident.
Sure enough, after a moment, Ai Feng nodded. “Alright, let’s do it your way.”
At this point, Shen Le turned around, grabbed the back of the chair, rested his chin on it, and looked up at Ai Feng and the man. “Can I go take them out now?”
……
“This way.”
On one side of the street, several figures were swiftly moving along the wall.
Not far behind them were densely packed zombies, burning buildings, and rising black smoke.
“Bang!”
The scythe-wielding girl at the front leaped forward as she reached a car, slashing down a zombie that had jumped out from behind the vehicle.
“Roar…”
The zombie’s body was nearly severed in half, but its hands still clutched the scythe, its mouth wide open, howling.
The scythe-wielding girl didn’t pause for a moment. After the slash, she twisted the blade, quickly pulling it out, causing a spray of blood to burst forth.
Only then did the scythe-wielding girl lightly land on the ground, but she didn’t stop for a second. Her feet touched the ground, and she continued to sprint forward.
The two girls and a young man following closely behind mimicked her actions, though the man and woman bringing up the rear hesitated slightly as they jumped over the zombie.
No choice—its chest was wide open, yet it was still struggling to raise its upper body and reach out to grab them…
“Ling Mo, more zombies are coming this way,” Mu Chen said breathlessly as he finally caught up to Ling Mo.
He looked at Ling Mo, visibly annoyed. Ling Mo was a mental ability superhuman, so why wasn’t he exhausted like a dog? Jumping from rooftop to rooftop consumed far more energy than running on flat ground. Moreover, they hadn’t rested much during the day and had fought two dominant level zombies at night. At this point, he and Xu Shuhan both looked worse for wear.
Logically, with both enhancement ability superhumans exhausted, Ling Mo, a mental ability superhuman, should have been flat on the ground.
Yet, although he was panting and beads of sweat had formed on his forehead, it was clear he still had some energy left.
It was baffling!
As for the three girls… Mu Chen took one glance at them and gave up on making any comparisons.
In these circumstances, it was better to preserve some dignity…
Regardless, they had managed to escape the inferno. But the increasingly intense flames were like beacons summoning zombies from afar, drawing them towards this location.
“He’s been timing it. No matter how fast we run, this is about the time we can break free from the siege. But the fire starts blazing even stronger right at this moment,” Ling Mo said, supporting his hands on his knees as he took a deep breath and looked ahead.
“Damn it! He’s pushing us to a dead end with all his might! Who knows where he has escaped to by now!” Mu Chen exclaimed through gritted teeth.
“No rush…” Ling Mo replied with a faint smile.
Both Mu Chen and Xu Shuhan were momentarily stunned by his smile. Here it was again… this guy could smile no matter the situation…
But where did he get this confidence from?
Just then, Ling Mo’s gaze shifted in another direction. To his eyes, it looked like a chaotic street, but through his other set of “eyes,” he saw two long, red, semi-transparent mental cords…
The two threads of condensed mental energy were intertwined, occasionally flickering with red light—a sign of mental energy transmission.
They stretched all the way to the end of the street, passing through buildings and walls, with the other ends embedded into two figures.
One thread was connected to a mutation panda, while the other entered the scarf of a young girl.
Yu Shiran’s eyes glowed red, her chubby, slightly pouty face showing an expression of annoyance.
She patted the panda on its head before climbing onto it. “Let’s go, Xiao Bai. Continue our miserable fate of being commanded by humans. Hmph… foolish humans…”
“Wait, let’s get out of the fire zone first. The humans are worried you’ll get roasted,” Yu Shiran suddenly added.
A white blur flashed, and soon they darted into an alley…
“Had enough rest? Pick up the pace,” Ling Mo said, glancing at Mu Chen. “There seem to be fewer zombies over that way. We’ll go there.”
He pointed towards a side path. Xia Na, in the lead, didn’t even look back before immediately veering towards it.
Upon hearing this, Mu Chen couldn’t help but let out a long sigh, but he had no choice but to clutch his stomach and keep moving.
However, as Xu Shuhan passed by him, the sighing Mu Chen suddenly heard her say, “Now you know what it feels like during a woman’s period? Weren’t you the one always saying training should continue no matter the circumstances? Now you get to experience it firsthand.”
Mu Chen was stunned for a moment, then burst into anger. “Seriously?! Can’t you show some sympathy? Don’t bring up old stuff! By the way… can someone give me a piggyback ride? Hey! Are you just going to leave me to die?”
Just then, Xia Na, who had just reached the street corner, suddenly leapt back and landed lightly on the ground.
Seeing her move, Mu Chen felt a glimmer of hope. “I knew there was at least one good Samaritan! Maybe I could use a skateboard or a cart or something…”
“It might be better to find a coffin.”
A voice with a hint of a smile suddenly interrupted him.
This unexpected voice made everyone come to a slow halt, looking warily in Xia Na’s direction.
Soon, a shadow appeared at the corner, followed by a figure slowly walking out.
In the moonlight, the shadow stretched long, but the figure himself was a rather short young man.
He stood under a broken streetlight, hands in his pockets, with a head of bright red hair that stood out prominently.
Facing Ling Mo and his group, even with two guns pointed at his head, the young man remained calm, even appearing relaxed.
Squinting slightly, he said with a cheerful tone, “Just kidding.”
“You won’t need coffins.” Though he said this with a smile, it sent a chill through everyone.
After a few seconds of silence, Ling Mo tugged at the corner of his mouth and responded, “Neither will you.”
