Chapter 660 – Talking Behind Someone’s Back Should Be Done Behind Their Back!
Following Shen Le’s navigation records, Ling Mo and his group set off on foot after leaving Dongming, eventually entering a more concealed route.
This road had been replaced by the highway and, while not entirely abandoned, saw little traffic, and thus fewer zombies.
To Ling Mo’s surprise, the road had been cleared.
The few abandoned vehicles had been pushed to the side, revealing a winding but unobstructed path.
This must have taken a considerable amount of effort; even for survivors or superhumans, it would have been a strenuous task.
But considering they had Number 1, the Experimental Subject-most of the hard labor was likely handled by that monster.
From the ground traces, it was apparent that several zombies had been killed here.
And these zombie corpses had, in turn, attracted another batch of zombies.
These zombies wandered slowly along the road, their eyes looking ahead but occasionally darting around, searching for potential prey.
Simply clearing the road didn’t mean much to Ling Mo and his group.
But as they lingered on the roadside, Ling Mo stumbled upon an off-road vehicle that was not only fully fueled but also stocked with some food.
It’s obvious this belonged to the members of Niepan headquarters. In the small compartment at the back of the off-road vehicle, there was even a rectangular iron cage, likely where Number 1 had been confined.
The bars of the cage bore numerous impact marks, probably from Number 1 struggling and receiving numerous beatings.
Ling Mo stared at the cage for a while, and involuntarily, an image of Xu Shuhan squatting inside it surfaced in his mind.
Her eyes gleaming through the red-tinged bars, her disheveled hair, her slightly open neckline…
“Wait, why am I thinking about this…”
Ling Mo quickly shook his head. When he looked at Xu Shuhan again, she seemed to have sensed something and suddenly grabbed Xia Na’s arm, hiding behind her.
“Uh…” Ling Mo felt an instant embarrassment.
Just before getting into the vehicle, he glanced back one more time.
Although they couldn’t be seen with the naked eye, Ling Mo knew very well that Yu Shiran and Xiao Bai were following closely behind.
After the last incident, the zombie loli wasn’t running around recklessly this time.
However, she and Xiao Bai were still keeping their distance, trailing from afar.
In terms of physical endurance, Xiao Bai was definitely not lacking in either speed or stamina.
But the fact that it was infected made it a ticking time bomb, potentially bringing unpredictable situations at any moment.
Despite his concerns, given the current circumstances, all they could do was continue to monitor the situation.
Yu Shiran, on the other hand, was probably sporting an unhappy expression again…
Thinking about this, Ling Mo felt a little helpless.
Circumstances were really pushing them to their limits…
“Captain, get in the car,” Mu Chen urged.
He was enamored with the off-road vehicle, caressing the hood with both hands while clicking his tongue in admiration, even as he urged Ling Mo to hurry.
But just as Mu Chen turned around, he was stunned to see someone already sitting in the driver’s seat.
“Wait a minute, can you drive?” Mu Chen asked, his eyes wide with surprise.
Xia Na snorted, flexing her fingers and eagerly getting ready, “Of course I can.”
“So confident…” Mu Chen showed a hint of skepticism but quickly noticed Ling Mo’s expression.
The captain was sitting in the front passenger seat, looking utterly miserable…
Mu Chen felt a chill run down his spine, but after opening his mouth, he chose to say nothing, begrudgingly getting into the car.
If even Ling Mo couldn’t avoid it, he would have to endure it as well…
“Even if the driving is terrible, at worst, we’ll just swerve a lot or go really slow…” Mu Chen tried to comfort himself.
However, a few minutes later, he would come to realize just how horribly wrong he was!
Xia Na’s driving was utterly reckless, with breathtaking speed!
When zombies appeared on the road, she would drive straight at them. It wasn’t until the zombies’ faces were almost plastered against the windshield, their horrifying expressions vividly clear, that Xia Na would suddenly swerve the steering wheel, narrowly missing them.
But that wasn’t all. As she narrowly avoided them, Xia Na would often slash out with a knife, counting seriously amidst the splattering blood carried by the wind: “One… two…”
Mu Chen, soon dizzy from all the swerving, was left with just one thought in his mind: “I guessed the beginning, but I didn’t foresee the process!”
As Ling Mo and his group drove swiftly toward Niepan headquarters, a helicopter was also landing at the airport within the Falcon Second Camp.
When the helicopter’s cabin door opened and a dozen figures filed out, someone was watching them from a window in a nearby building.
Seeing the group head straight towards his building upon disembarking, this person couldn’t help but smile coldly: “They didn’t even send a notice; just came over without a word.”
“They left a message…” a voice from behind him interjected.
“Oh… that kind of thing, I never bother to read it,” the person by the window said nonchalantly.
“That makes sense…” the one behind him agreed, nodding thoughtfully, “You are the one in charge here now, the real boss. They just left a message, came over without any discussion, and even forcefully boarded our supply helicopter…”
The person by the window suddenly turned around and said, “From now on, give this order: without my command, no one from Falcon headquarters should be allowed to board our helicopters. Hmm… also include Ling Mo’s orders as well.”
“Ling Mo’s whereabouts are unknown…” Zhang Yu rolled his eyes dramatically.
Though he spoke lightly, a trace of worry appeared on Zhang Yu’s face.
In fact, it was precisely because of Yuwen Xuan’s attitude that those people had come.
And now, issuing such a forceful order might indeed lead to a situation where they only listen to Yuwen Xuan and Ling Mo…
But if it ever came to that, would Falcon Camp just let it happen?
Before he could ponder further, a voice suddenly sounded from outside the door.
“I need to announce your arrival… you can’t just barge in!”
“Announce what! Everyone here is a long-time veteran of headquarters; notifying him, Yuwen Xuan, is just turning things upside down!”
“What’s the point of wasting words on them? You lot, beat it! Who do you think you are, daring to block us? Blind as a bat!”
Amidst the ruckus, the door started shaking from repeated banging.
“This is really…” Zhang Yu frowned, speaking up.
But before he could say more, Yuwen Xuan grabbed his collar and swiftly moved to the door, yanking it open with a loud “click”: “Hey, distinguished guests.”
Outside, two guards were anxiously and awkwardly trying to hold back a large group of people. At the forefront was a man raising his arm and glaring angrily at the guards.
The moment the door swung open, his raised hand froze mid-air.
“Such enthusiasm! I haven’t even come out, and you’re already ready to greet me? Hahaha, no need to be so courteous. You’re way too polite. So, um… what are you exactly, and what’s your name?”
Yuwen Xuan squinted his eyes, a wide smile plastered on his face.
The man with the raised arm looked awkward at first but his face darkened immediately upon hearing the last sentence.
Sarcasm, insults—Yuwen Xuan ramped up the tension the moment he opened his mouth…
The man’s fingers twitched, but he refrained from striking, lowering his arm with a grim expression, “I am Gao Wei, Deputy Regimental Commander of the headquarters Investigative Team, and this is our commander.”
As he spoke, he turned his gaze to a gaunt, elderly man beside him.
The old man’s skin was dark and his expression severe. His drooping eyelids nearly covered his tiny eyes, and his tightly pressed lips gave off an unapproachable vibe.
“I’m the commander, Mi Tan.”
“Should be called Stoneface…” Yuwen Xuan muttered, rolling his eyes. He then turned and added, “High-ranking stoneface… what a duo.”
Gao Wei’s face darkened to the point it seemed like ink might drip from it. Those behind him either wore grim expressions or struggled to stifle their laughter.
Rumor had it that the boss of the Second Camp was a lunatic, and seeing him today, it was indeed true…
Who talks smack about someone right to their face? Without even lowering their voice!
Zhang Yu, the supposed target of Yuwen Xuan’s remarks, maintained an utterly serious demeanor. Ignoring Yuwen Xuan’s words, he addressed Mi Tan, “Commander Mi, we’ve been expecting you. Please, come this way.”
