Chapter 692 – The Most Timid Zombie in History
When they looked inside, there were no zombies in sight behind the door. Xia Na and Li Yalin were already nowhere to be found.
Ling Mo stood calmly at the doorway, looking somewhat idle.
In reality, he was controlling the little zombie, silently taking out the scattered zombies roaming the aisles.
As for Xia Na and Li Yalin… with two Leader-Level Zombies handling the ordinary zombies, there was nothing to worry about.
Actually, the presence of him and Mu Chen, two humans, made things more complicated.
Xu Shuhan and Mu Chen were both quite anxious, especially Xu Shuhan. She perked up her ears, occasionally catching some faint noises, but she couldn’t determine the situation.
She could smell many zombie scents, but unlike Ye Lian and the others, she couldn’t accurately judge their direction or number.
She couldn’t even compare to a common zombie, let alone a Leader-Level Zombie.
This state of fluctuating during the mutation process might be the first of its kind.
Mu Chen was also quite curious about this, but even though Xu Shuhan seemed mostly rational, he instinctively retreated closer to Ye Lian when they were near.
Xu Shuhan didn’t really notice this… even if she had, she likely would have found it more amusing than hurtful. It was like avoiding a cub only to seek protection from a true monster…
After about ten minutes, Ling Mo suddenly breathed a sigh of relief, and Xia Na and Li Yalin slipped back through the door crack: “Alright, we can go in now.”
“Yes, but keep it quiet,” Ling Mo reminded, giving Xu Shuhan a pointed look, “No more yelling here.”
“You really think the soundproofing is that bad…” Xu Shuhan’s face flushed with both embarrassment and anger as she retorted.
What’s wrong with being afraid of the dark… it’s normal for girls to be afraid of the dark!
Especially when three were right beside her…
Thinking of this, Xu Shuhan was momentarily stunned. She curiously sneaked a glance at Ye Lian and the three girls, wondering when they had started being with Ling Mo. Were they human at the time, or had they already become zombies?
Regardless of the situation, the girls around Ling Mo were clearly not normal human girls…
“No wonder he doesn’t understand girls…” Xu Shuhan rolled her eyes internally.
The group quietly slipped out from behind the slightly opened door, moving cautiously along the narrow aisle between the shelves and slowly advancing into the mall.
The mall was quite large and poorly lit, making everything seem like suspicious shadows lurking around without a flashlight.
Xu Shuhan tensed up, feeling her blood circulation speeding up again.
However, Ling Mo’s earlier “special reminder” clearly had an effect on her. Despite her strained expression, Xu Shuhan bit her lip to stay silent.
Below this floor of the mall was a supermarket and a food square, with a considerable number of zombies lingering around. They were only separated by a ceiling, always on the verge of being discovered.
On the current floor where Ling Mo and his group were, it was mainly dedicated to selling shoes, bags, and clothing.
“Hurry up and find clothes,” Ling Mo whispered in the lowest volume, waving his hand.
The three Leader-Level Zombies disappeared in an instant. Mu Chen hesitated for a moment but then slipped into one of the aisles.
“My shoe soles are almost worn out…” Mu Chen murmured softly as he went.
Ling Mo glanced around and spotted a sports brand counter.
Meanwhile, at the stairwell leading to the lower floor, a little zombie was also slowly making its way down…
“Hey…”
As Ling Mo was about to move, he felt his sleeve being tugged.
Looking back, he saw Xu Shuhan staring at him with her reddened eyes. “I… I want to go with you.”
“The zombies on this floor are already taken care of…” Ling Mo replied helplessly. He was still multitasking…
“But… but I’m scared…” Xu Shuhan said, toughing it out.
Xu Shuhan had intended to go along with Ye Lian and the others, but the thought of being out of everyone’s sight and alone with them made her hesitate.
Although her body was in the midst of mutation, her thoughts remained human…
As a result, she hesitated for just a second, and by the time she made up her mind, they were nowhere to be seen…
The idea of wandering around in such a creepy environment alone, possibly encountering corpses at any moment, made her nervous enough to potentially become a burden to everyone else.
Seeing Xu Shuhan staring at him with a mix of awkwardness and anticipation, Ling Mo sighed deeply.
“I’d really like you to look in a mirror. In this state, others should be the ones afraid of you…”
As soon as Ling Mo finished speaking, he felt a smack on his arm.
He frowned but didn’t say anything further; instead, he headed straight forward.
Xu Shuhan followed closely behind Ling Mo, her reddened eyes glancing nervously from side to side.
“Click…”
A small pair of feet stepped off the last step of the escalator, causing the metal floor to make a slight sound.
The little zombie stopped moving, looked down at its feet, and then glanced around.
After a few seconds of no further sounds, the little zombie leaped forward, landing silently on the ground.
This level was underground, and apart from the area near the elevator, it was shrouded in darkness.
However, through the little zombie’s eyes, everything in the darkness was clearly visible.
The scene was chaotic, everything tinged with a shade of red.
The little zombie sniffed the air and slowly walked forward, soon turning a corner and disappearing into the darkness…
“What are you thinking about?” Xu Shuhan suddenly asked.
Ling Mo snapped back to reality and replied, “Nothing…”
He couldn’t very well tell Xu Shuhan that he was controlling a zombie puppet to find the source of their anxiety, could he?
Even though Xu Shuhan had also become a zombie and certainly understood the situation with Ye Lian and the others, it wasn’t necessary to reveal all his superpowers…
“Is that so… You seem very focused…” Xu Shuhan muttered, feeling that his casual response was quite dismissive…
“What about you? Why haven’t I seen you using that recorder?” Ling Mo asked, turning back to look at her.
“Given recent events… It might be better not to record anything for now. If I mutate and somehow manage to keep my sanity, I’ll continue recording and start a… Zombie Diary,” Xu Shuhan said, unable to suppress a bitter smile.
“That sounds great! If it gets passed down, it could become really popular,” Ling Mo responded with a smile.
“Passed down…” Xu Shuhan’s smile faded, replaced by a distant expression. “Who knows what will happen to humanity in the future? We might go extinct.”
“Don’t be so pessimistic. Aren’t humans evolving too?” Ling Mo glanced back at her.
Xu Shuhan paused, suddenly wanting to ask Ling Mo which side he would stand on between humans and zombies…
“Oh, this store sells women’s clothes. Can you wear sportswear? Zombies move a lot, so I think it would be quite suitable for you,” Ling Mo said as he quickly walked ahead, peering inside the store.
Xu Shuhan bit her lip but eventually nodded, “Alright…”
“But why don’t Ye Lian and the others wear this kind of clothing then?”
“Because it doesn’t look good… Besides, they can control their movements.”
“You… I…”
“Why are you glaring at me? It’s just the truth… You’re still a primary zombie after all.”
“… Foolish human.”
The small food stalls lining the aisle were completely abandoned now. The ingredients left on them had long since molded into black lumps, and the clear glass counters were smudged and darkened.
Occasionally, faint noises could be heard, but it was unclear whether they were from rats or cockroaches.
These creatures were truly resilient. After surviving the initial phase where contact with the virus would have caused them to rot and perish, they had gradually reemerged from the dark corners.
Although their numbers had dwindled significantly, this new batch was evidently no longer killed off instantly by the virus.
The little zombie moved slowly through the cluttered tables and chairs, its blood-red eyes darting around.
“Squeak…”
Two faint points of red light appeared in a corner, then quickly vanished.
“Red?”
The little zombie froze momentarily, and Ling Mo, controlling the main body, was taken aback.
Though faint, it was definitely red glimmer…
An infection? It didn’t quite seem like it…
In any case, this state posed a potential threat to humans.
“Rats and such… It’s rare to encounter them, but…” Ling Mo slightly furrowed his brow. This was a rather dangerous signal.
Some small creatures that couldn’t withstand the virus before now exhibit resistance to it, and they might even carry the virus themselves…
Just like plants, growing strangely in a virus-laden environment.
The greenery these days, compared to before, isn’t just overgrown but excessively dense.
Their shapes have also changed; most have grown more “aggressive,” though they don’t actually attack people. But you have to be extra careful when moving through the grass and trees to avoid accidentally getting scratched.
“Is this a global viral phenomenon…” Ling Mo couldn’t help but think.
“Catch.” A deliberately lowered voice suddenly came from ahead, snapping Ling Mo out of his daze.
A dark shadow swiftly approached him. Ling Mo caught it, and a musty smell immediately wafted out.
“It’s unopened, but it still has a bit of a smell… Air it out and it’ll be fine,” Xu Shuhan said, holding her own bundle of clothes while hesitantly looking back.
“Go change, I’ll stand right here,” Ling Mo said helplessly.
“Don’t move…”
Xu Shuhan reminded him again before cautiously walking behind a shelf.
“If she actually mutates, would she become the most timid zombie in history?”
Ling Mo thought as he put on the new jacket.
Thinking about it, it seemed quite possible…
