Chapter 39 – The Ignored Warning
In the corridor, Su Lifeng had already made his way to another fire escape.
Several Xenospecies hurried down from upstairs and brushed right past him.
The last Xenospecies suddenly stopped. Her cold eyes swept suspiciously over the corner where Su Lifeng was hiding.
Although she could not sense Su Lifeng’s exact location, the Xenospecies had keenly picked up on the faint feeling of being watched.
She slowed her steps and walked over. Before she got all the way there, she raised her arm. In the span of just a second or two, a layer of black feathers spread over her palm at a speed visible to the naked eye, and her fingers turned into sharp, eagle-like talons.
Swish!
The instant she reached the corner, she lashed out with one fierce swipe.
It hit nothing…
The Xenospecies walked over in confusion and glanced at the empty corner, then looked down the corridor.
There was not a single person in the hallway either.
The Xenospecies did not linger. She turned and caught up with her companions.
What this Xenospecies did not know was that inside one of the consultation rooms she had just glanced past, the corpse of the Nurse Xenospecies was lying on the floor.
But because the door was open, it had instead failed to arouse her suspicion…
“Whew.”
By now, Su Lifeng had already jumped through a window into a third-floor ward. He flexed his Bone Wings, then glanced at the lime dust coating both his hands.
Climbing buildings was still a bit too advanced for him. Even if it had only been from the second floor to the third…
Luckily, he had reacted quickly. Sure enough, these Xenospecies had caught on fast and come searching downstairs again.
Su Lifeng had never underestimated the intelligence of these Xenospecies. When they first entered their skins, they appeared uncoordinated and strange, but with their highly efficient collective learning ability, those problems might soon stop being problems at all.
Aside from that, in terms of pure reasoning ability, Su Lifeng treated them as having the intelligence of normal human beings.
People were influenced by ingrained ways of thinking and could be deceived by appearances. But people also had a cautious side. When fighting a person, the slightest hesitation or the tiniest error in judgment could lead to defeat.
It was precisely because Su Lifeng had taken all of this into account that he had managed to reach the third floor smoothly.
But by now, all the Xenospecies were probably converging on this building. He had to be even more careful.
Just then, Su Lifeng suddenly spotted two figures through the window.
The two of them had already climbed over the perimeter wall and were now carefully making their way along the driveway.
“Zhang Xiong, are you sure your girlfriend is really hooking up with their department head? I mean, what if our sister-in-law is just working overtime? If you sneak in here like this, won’t it damage your relationship?” The bald man among the two looked around as he spoke in a low voice. While trying to persuade his companion, he muttered uneasily, “I haven’t been to a hospital in ages. Are hospitals this creepy at night now? Hey, I heard more than a dozen murders and disappearances have happened in this district lately, and they were all dismemberment cases. Do you think all those people who died wrongfully might be lying in the morgue here? Damn it, now that I think about it, I really want to go back!”
“Brother Gouzi, can you man up a little? Bodies from murder cases would definitely be at the police station. Why would they be here? We’re here to catch her in the act, got it? That bitch hasn’t answered my calls for two days. I went to the place she’s renting, and even the landlord said she hasn’t been back for two days. How much overtime can a little nurse like her possibly work? She must have been seduced by that old pervert in her department! Just tell me, are you helping me or not?” The man called Zhang Xiong had a gaunt face and a vicious look. To show his determination, he even rolled up his sleeves, revealing a bluish tattoo.
“Of course I’ll help. It’s just beating him up, right? But we have to be careful. If we get caught, forget beating anyone up-we’ll be the ones getting hauled into the station. I heard from a bunch of the guys that the cops have been going crazy arresting people lately. Even people who usually only get into minor trouble have been dragged in for questioning. Do you think something big happened?” Bald Man Gouzi thumped his chest loyally, but then his tone shifted and he began muttering with a worried look.
Zhang Xiong shook his head. “Who cares what big thing happened? It has nothing to do with us anyway. People online are saying there are disasters everywhere and that the end of the world is coming. So what? What’s that got to do with us? You see the news going on about that shipwreck every day, has it affected you or me? Far as I’m concerned, the only thing it affected was my TV dramas! Right now, all I care about is that cheating pair, got it? We beat him up, find that woman and vent some anger, then we’re done. After that, we go back and have late-night beers!”
As the two of them talked, they had already arrived at the base of the outpatient building.
Smack!
A folder fell from above and landed right in the grass in front of Gouzi, scaring him so badly he nearly jumped.
If he hadn’t bitten his lip in time, he probably would have cried out.
“What the hell was that?!” Zhang Xiong was startled too. He reached down and picked up the folder. Clipped to it was a medical record, and on it were several crooked red words: “Danger inside. Do not enter.”
“Why is this writing sticky? It looks like blood, doesn’t it?” Gouzi leaned in for a look, then wiped it with his finger. It really was blood!
Zhang Xiong stared at the words for a moment, then abruptly looked up.
There wasn’t a single person upstairs. The building was pitch-black, and the sight of it was honestly a little chilling.
Zhang Xiong held the clipboard and thought for two seconds, then tossed it back into the grass and cursed, “Nutjob.” With that, he walked into the building.
Bald Gouzi followed close behind, muttering, “Isn’t this hospital supposed to specialize in orthopedics? Since when do they take in lunatics too?”
Upstairs, Su Lifeng frowned and ducked back behind the curtain.
He didn’t know why these two had come in, but judging from how sneaky they looked, they probably weren’t here to see a doctor.
“Those two are dead for sure.” Su Lifeng sighed inwardly and glanced at the scalpel, which no longer had any blood on it. He had used all the blood to write those words…
He had already done everything he could. If those two refused to listen to the warning, then that was their own choice.
Su Lifeng turned and walked toward the ward door. He could faintly hear footsteps approaching from that direction.
“That’s an F-class Mutant. We have to catch him.”
Through the glass panel in the door, Su Lifeng saw a Xenospecies that looked like a male doctor.
Behind him followed another male orderly who was a little older, but while the doctor spoke, the orderly remained completely silent.
“Two more humans came in. Has the recruitment notice been posted?” The male doctor’s next words made Su Lifeng’s scalp prickle. They had already learned how to do that?
Fortunately, the orderly shook his head at that moment. “Webpage editing… still learning…”
“Learn faster,” the male doctor said.
However, just as the male orderly was about to nod, the door to the ward beside them was suddenly yanked open.
The male doctor reacted instantly and reached out to grab the orderly.
But a streak of red light was even faster. It stabbed into the male orderly, then dragged him through the doorway.
