Chapter 58 – What’s the Most Important Thing When You’re Out in the World?
Lin Xi thought it over, then shook her head.
“With Xia Xun around, Senior Chu Wenmu would never dare make things difficult for me again.”
“I could tell she was sincerely apologizing for giving me trouble that day.”
“If it wasn’t Senior Chu Wenmu, then it shouldn’t be any of the other members of the Discipline Committee either. After all, no one in the Discipline Committee would dare go over her head and come after me.”
After mulling it over, Lin Xi concluded that she must have been standing out too much lately and attracted someone’s jealousy.
“There’s that saying, right? The tallest tree in the forest is the first to be destroyed by the wind.”
“But I haven’t even ‘stood out’ that much yet, and I’ve already attracted a ‘gale’?”
“I think you’re pretty low-key too, Miss Lin Xi,” Yang Shanshan said. “So… should we tell a teacher about this?”
“No need,” Lin Xi said. “It’s no big deal. Same as before-if they dare make trouble for me, I’ll have the Discipline Committee deal with them!”
…
After school, Lin Xi tidied up her desk, preparing to go to this “meeting” alone.
But Yang Shanshan tugged at the corner of her clothes. “I’ll go with you! Don’t underestimate me just because I look like this. I… I’m actually pretty good at fighting!”
“Hahaha,” Lin Xi laughed. “Who said I was going to fight?”
“I’ll just bring up Senior Chu Wenmu right away. If that doesn’t work, I’ll bring up Xia Xun. That’ll definitely defuse the crisis.”
If it really came to a fight, Lin Xi honestly couldn’t see what kind of combat ability Yang Shanshan was supposed to have.
The girl gave her the impression of someone so delicate a strong gust of wind could knock her over.
“Don’t worry.” Lin Xi patted the back of Yang Shanshan’s hand, signaling for her to let go.
Yang Shanshan released her. Lin Xi had barely taken two steps when Yang Shanshan chased after her with another question.
“What if it’s a confession?”
“Impossible.”
“But what if it is?”
“Uh… then I’ll just reject them outright.” Lin Xi had thought this through very clearly. She was a witch; she didn’t even know how long she would live.
Reborn as a witch, and she was supposed to date? Like hell!
Hearing Lin Xi say without the slightest hesitation that she would reject them, Yang Shanshan finally relaxed. “Go on, then. I’ll wait downstairs so we can go eat together.”
“I want to know how this turns out too.”
…
Creeeak-clack.
Lin Xi pushed open the door leading to the rooftop.
On the empty rooftop, the breeze was light, and the sunlight was just right.
Lin Xi glanced around. Where was the person???
Damn it!
“Don’t tell me this was a prank and they were messing with me?”
Lin Xi was just about to turn around and leave when a voice called out to her.
“Over here!”
“Miss Lin Xi, look up!”
Lin Xi raised her head and lifted a hand to block out the dazzling sunlight. At the top of the rooftop water tower, she saw a girl waving at her.
She recognized the girl at once-her classmate, the study committee member Su Xiangxue.
Putting everything else aside for the moment, Lin Xi shouted for Su Xiangxue to come down.
“It’s dangerous up there, Miss Su Xiangxue. Hurry and come down.”
“Okay, wait just a second-” Su Xiangxue climbed down the metal ladder step by step.
After patting the dust from her hands, Su Xiangxue stood in front of Lin Xi with a smile.
Lin Xi fell into deep thought. This cute girl with twin tails and glasses didn’t look like someone who had come here to pick a fight, no matter how she looked at her.
No way… was it really a confession letter???
Lin Xi carefully thought back. Recently, she had indeed talked with Su Xiangxue in class a few times, but they had all been normal exchanges between ordinary classmates.
She hadn’t noticed Su Xiangxue liking her either.
Since Lin Xi intended to reject her, she should do it properly and politely.
“Miss Su Xiangxue, thank you for liking me, but I-“
“Huh???!!!” Su Xiangxue covered her mouth and let out an astonishing sound. “Miss Lin Xi, what are you talking about?!”
Lin Xi: “…”
Su Xiangxue: “…”
The two stared at each other, wide-eyed.
Lin Xi frowned. “What? If it’s not a confession, then you really did come to challenge me to a fight?”
“No!” Su Xiangxue said with a laugh. “I’m not asking you out for a fight, and I’m not confessing to you either!”
Lin Xi: “…”
Girls were impossible to figure out…
Lin Xi’s face flushed scarlet. This was beyond awkward.
She wanted nothing more than to turn and run, then pretend none of this had ever happened.
“Ahem!” She fake-coughed, pretending she didn’t care about what had just happened, and asked, “Then why did you ask me to come out here?”
Su Xiangxue said, “Miss Lin Xi, you must want to know who first started the Lin Xi Fan Club, right?”
Lin Xi asked in surprise, “Don’t tell me it was you?”
“It was me. Hehe. Didn’t see that coming, did you?”
“No, wait, Miss Su Xiangxue, when did I offend you?”
Su Xiangxue: “…”
Lin Xi’s response threw her logic into disarray. Su Xiangxue said, “Having a fan club is a sign of popularity. Isn’t that a good thing?”
“Sigh-” Lin Xi sighed. “Fine, I guess. I’m already past caring anyway. I just want to know why you did something like this.”
Su Xiangxue said, “Because I genuinely believe you’re amazing, Miss Lin Xi. You deserve to become a school idol.”
“Uh, that’s…” Lin Xi didn’t think so herself.
But Yang Shanshan had said she was amazing, and now Su Xiangxue was saying the same thing…
“Could I really be amazing???”
“Of course,” Su Xiangxue replied solemnly. “First of all, as the study committee member, grades are what I care about most. Miss Lin Xi, your recent academic performance can only be described as improving by leaps and bounds.”
Lin Xi admitted that much. Her grades had completely crushed the Cuddle Witch’s.
“Second, you recently received the Z City Good Citizen award.”
“That wasn’t entirely my own accomplishment, though.”
“Lastly, you straightened out the Discipline Committee.”
“That one really wasn’t my own accomplishment. Xia Xun deserves most of the credit for both of those things.”
“No.” Su Xiangxue’s tone grew even more serious. “Miss Lin Xi, you’re underestimating yourself. That’s why you lack confidence.”
“Let me ask you something. What’s the most important thing when you’re out in the world?”
Lin Xi answered tentatively, “Loyalty?”
“Wrong!” Su Xiangxue corrected her. “The most important thing is being out there!”
Lin Xi: “…”
Su Xiangxue said, “Miss Lin Xi, you’ve put yourself out there physically, but your heart still hasn’t come out with you.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means you’ve done plenty of impressive things, but deep down, you still think you’re not good enough.”
“All right…” Lin Xi admitted. “I have social anxiety, I’m an introverted I-type, and I used to be practically invisible in class. I guess I really don’t have much confidence.”
“But the you now is nothing like the you before!” Su Xiangxue said excitedly. “So you need to tell yourself, ‘Of course I deserve to have a fan club!'”
Lin Xi: “…”
“Um, Miss Su Xiangxue, after that whole long speech, are you just trying to get me to accept the fact that I have a fan club?”
“That’s only the surface,” Su Xiangxue said. “What I want is for you to realize that you’re amazing!”
“Okay, okay, okay.” Lin Xi fully accepted Su Xiangxue’s encouragement. “But we’re not exactly close, are we? You’re doing all this for me. What’s your goal?”
Su Xiangxue smiled. “With smart people, you can speak plainly.”
“Lin Xi, the most dazzling idol on our campus is Xia Xun. She’s a Magical Girl, so to everyone, it’s only natural that the spotlight shines on her.”
“But what about ordinary people like us? Can’t an idol rise up from among ordinary people too?”
“Lin Xi, you will become the brightest star among us ordinary students!”
“You will speak for ordinary students like us!”
Lin Xi: “…”
The problem is, I’m not an ordinary person. I’m a witch!
